Buffalo Sabres trade Peterka to Utah Mammoth to acquire Kesselring and Doan, AP source says
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres' long-anticipated offseason retooling began late Wednesday night with the team agreeing to trade forward JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth to acquire forward Josh Doan and defenseman Michael Kesselring, a person with direct knowledge of the deal confirmed to The Associated Press.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced by the teams. DailyFaceoff was the first to report the trade.
This is a major swap of young players all within their first three seasons of NHL experience.
The 23-year-old Peterka is coming off consecutive 25-plus goal seasons, and was scheduled to become a restricted free agent next week. He is anticipated to already be in discussions on a new contract with Utah.
Doan, a 23-year-old winger, is the son of longtime Arizona Coyotes star Shane Doan, and his departure is the organization's latest move that separates this Salt Lake City chapter from the past. He had seven goals and 19 points in his rookie season with Utah last year.
Kesselring, a 25-year-old defenseman, played alongside Doan for the U.S. when it won the world championships in May for the first time since 1933. He completed his second full NHL season with seven goals and 29 points — both career highs.
The Sabres were expected to shake up their roster after a disappointing finish in Lindy Ruff's first season back with the team. Buffalo finished 14th in the Eastern Conference standings and extended its NHL-record playoff drought to a 14th season.
The Mammoth, meantime, acquire a promising offensive star while keeping their No. 4 pick in the NHL draft on Friday night.

Sharks are buying out the final year of Marc-Edouard Vlasic's contract
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Sharks placed longtime defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic on unconditional waivers Thursday for the purpose of buying out the final year of his contract. Vlasic, 38 has been a staple in the Bay Area for the better part of the past two decades. He has played all 1,465 games of his NHL career for the Sharks since debuting in 2006. Hall of Famers Ray Bourque and Nicklas Lidstrom are the only defensemen who have played more games in the league with one team than Vlasic, counting the regular season and playoffs. Vlasic was a significant part of their core during the contending days when they reached the playoffs in 13 of 14 years and went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016. 'This was a difficult decision to make today, with how much Marc has meant to the San Jose organization for 19 years,' general manager Mike Grier said. 'I was fortunate enough to be here with Marc for his first season with the Sharks and knew he would become a great defenseman. Over the course of his career in the NHL, Vlasic was one of the premier shutdown defensemen, earning tough defensive assignments on the ice against the best players in the world and doing it with effectiveness.' A native of Montreal, Vlasic was a key part of Canada's gold-medal run at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He missed much of last season because of injuries but skated in 27 games and had three points. Vlasic was set to count $7 million against the salary cap in 2025-26. Buying him out saves San Jose $2.3 million, while counting $1.2 million extra in '26-27. 'He brought immense expertise and experience to the organization daily, and was selected to represent his country on multiple occasions at the highest level,' Grier said. 'He will go down not only as one of the best defensemen in franchise history but one of the best players. Buccaneers extend coach Todd Bowles, GM Jason Licht
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Buccaneers signed general manager Jason Licht and coach Todd Bowles to multi-year contract extensions on Thursday. Bucs owner and co-chairman Joel Glazer said in the team's announcement the two have been critical to the team's recent success. 'The winning culture they have established has us well positioned for the future,' Glazer said in a statement. 'The continuity and stability they provide will play a large role in our ability to compete for additional championships.' The team did not provide terms of the extensions. Bowles is coming off his third year as coach in which he led the Bucs to a fourth-straight NFC South title. He was promoted in 2022 after Bruce Arians stepped down following the Buccaneers' Super Bowl LV victory. Bowles had previously served as the team's defensive coordinator for three seasons. The team announced its pre-season schedule Thursday, which is set to get underway on Sept. 21 at home against the Minnesota Wild. There will be a pair of games against the Edmonton Oilers—first on Sept. 23 from Canada Life Centre, then on the road on Sept. 26. The very next night the Jets will be back home against the Calgary Flames. The pre-season wraps up on the road against the Wild on Sept. 30 and then in Calgary on Oct. 3. Both games being played in Alberta will start at 8 p.m.; the first preseason game starts at 4 p.m., and the other three have 7 p.m. starts. The 2025-26 season will start on Oct. 7.
