Bennett re-elected Mayor in Bramwell, Pike in Athens
BRAMWELL — Two incumbent mayors in Mercer County will return to office.
In the town of Bramwell, incumbent Mayor Grant Bennett overcame a challenge from two people Tuesday, including the former mayor, and was re-elected, according to unofficial returns.
Bennet, who will begin his second-term as mayor, won with 71 votes. He was challenged by Rodney Holcomb who garnered 41 votes and by former Mayor Louise Stoker, who received 28 votes.
'It will be my second term. I am pleased with the results and I'm looking forward to another two years of trying to do some good work in the town,' Bennett said.
Bennett, a retired member of the U.S. Air Force who is originally from Chattanooga, Tenn., said he didn't anticipate any major changes for the town over the next two years. However, one item he said that may be looked at is moving away from two-year terms for council to staggered four-year terms.
'I am pleased with the direction,' Bennett said. 'I don't foresee any changes. We hope to manage what we've got and improve it.'
Bennett said tourism has been an important part of Bramwell for decades now.
The town, which is known as the 'Home of the Millionaires,' gained fame for having the highest number of millionaires per capita in the United States during the late 1800s, with as many as 13 residing in the town during the early 20th century, according to the town's history. The annual tour of the homes of the millionaires continues to this very day.
However, in more recent years, the town has been associated with the region's ATV tourism engine and serves as the local trailhead of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail system.
The results of two other contested races in the town were razor thin, and their final outcome could hinge upon the canvassing and certification of votes, which are set for June 16 and June 18.
In the race for recorder, Lathe Ellis received 61 votes and Susan Lance Troutner garnered 60 votes.
In the race for town council, five candidates were vying for eight seats on town council with one race being separated by two votes.
The apparent winners in unofficial returns were newcomer Sharon Workman, 102 votes; incumbent Jackie Shahan, 81 votes; newcomer Don Thompson, 76 votes; incumbent Dennis Marcello, 65 votes; and newcomer Elizabeth Brown Tillery, 62 votes. Close behind at 60 votes was incumbent Kelley Murphy Eller. Incumbent Charles Hawthorne had 57 votes; and Perry Love garnered 21 votes.
The election results were posted on the town of Bramwell's Facebook page and were confirmed Wednesday to the Daily Telegraph by Bramwell Town Clerk Crystal Bralley.
In the town of Athens, the races in Tuesday's election were uncontested.
Incumbent Athens Mayor Timothy Peak ran unopposed and was re-elected with 29 votes, according to the unofficial returns.
Two seats were up on the Athens Town Council and the winners were Travis Pace, 21 votes and James Blankenship, 27 votes.
The election results will be canvassed on Tuesday, June 17, according to Athens Town Clerk Debra Shorter.
Shorter said the candidates will be sworn in during the first council meeting in July.
The town of Athens is home to Concord University.

Another clue drops as frantic hunt for Powerball $100 million winner intensifies
More than a day after the life-changing numbers were drawn, Australia's newest multimillionaire is still a mystery — and officials are desperately urging Powerball players in Sydney's east to check their tickets immediately. One ticket, purchased at Bondi Junction Newsagency & Internet Café on Oxford Street, holds the sole division one winning entry from Thursday night's $100 million Powerball draw 1517. But with no registered player details linked to the ticket, The Lott still has no way of contacting the winner — and can only wait, and hope, that someone soon realises they've become one of the country's richest individuals. "With a winning entry tucked away in their car, wallet, or stuck on their fridge door, one New South Wales player is walking around completely oblivious to the fact their life has forever changed," The Lott spokesperson Eliza Wregg said. "There are 100 million reasons why Sydney's eastern suburbs players should check their tickets today.' The winning numbers drawn Thursday, June 12, were 28, 10, 3, 16, 31, 14 and 21. The Powerball number was 6. For Bondi Junction Newsagency & Internet Café, the news is already legendary. "Wow. It's legendary to hear we've sold the winning ticket in Thursday night's Powerball draw worth $100 million," said store owner Manish. "This is by far the biggest winning entry we've ever sold. The team are thrilled to hear the winning news. I'll be rewarding the particular staff member who sold the winning ticket, too. I'm hoping it's one of our regular customers, but you never know — it could be a tourist too. We're located right next to the closest station to Bondi Beach, so you never know." The Lott confirmed that this is the only Division One winner nationally in draw 1517, meaning just one lucky ticket holder is entitled to the entire nine-figure prize. $100 million Powerball winner reveals how her life has changed How $100 million Powerball winner can best spend their jackpot Powerball $100m draw: What really happens when you score "Imagine discovering you're suddenly a multi-millionaire! You could immediately retire, take the trip of your dreams, or spoil those nearest and dearest to you," Wregg added. "All you need to do is visit scan your ticket on The Lott app or visit one of our friendly retailers to find out if you are our division one winner." If the winner comes forward, they'll join the ranks of Powerball royalty. Last year alone, 21 Australians shared in over $773 million worth of division one prizes — including a record $150 million win by a single Adelaide man. Until then, the nation waits — and watches — to see who will step forward to claim one of the biggest lottery prizes ever handed out in Australia. Do you have a story tip? This Airline Is Going to Start Handing Out $675 Fines to 'Unruly' Passengers: 'It Is Unacceptable'
European airline Ryanair has announced that passengers it removes from its flights for "unruly behavior" will now face an additional fine The fine for £500 — more than $675 — will be presented to anyone whose behavior "results in them being offloaded from the aircraft" 'It is unacceptable that passengers are made to suffer unnecessary disruption because of one unruly passenger's behavior," an airline spokesperson said in a statementA major European airline announced this week that passengers who are removed from flights for "unruly behavior" will now face an additional fine in an effort to crack down on what it calls "unacceptable behavior." On Thursday, June 12, Irish airline Ryanair revealed that it is introducing a £500 fine — more than $675 — to any passenger "whose unruly behavior results in them being offloaded from the aircraft." The newly implemented fines from Ryanair, which calls itself Europe's "most punctual airline," take on an "industry-wide issue affecting all airlines," the airline said in its release. The "minimum" fine comes as the airline vows to "continue to pursue disruptive passengers for civil damages." 'It is unacceptable that passengers are made [to] suffer unnecessary disruption because of one unruly passenger's behavior," a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement. "To help ensure that our passengers and crew travel in a comfortable and stress-free environment, without unnecessary disruption caused by a tiny number of unruly passengers, we have introduced a £500 fine, which will be issued to any passengers offloaded from aircraft as a result of their misconduct." "While these are isolated events which happen across all airlines, disruptive behavior in such a confined shared space is unacceptable, and we hope that our proactive approach will act as a deterrent to eliminate this unacceptable behavior onboard our aircraft," the spokesperson added. PEOPLE reached out to Ryanair for comment but did not receive an immediate response. Michael O'Leary, Ryanair's CEO, previously argued that passengers should be limited to two drinks at airports, telling the Daily Telegraph in August that authorities "don't allow people to drink-drive, yet we keep putting them up in aircraft at 33,000ft." "In the old days, people who drank too much would eventually fall over or fall asleep. But now those passengers are also on tablets and powder," he said. "It's the mix. You get much more aggressive behavior that becomes very difficult to manage." Back in January, the airline took legal action against a passenger in Ireland, seeking £12,500 — or roughly $17,000 — claiming that they disrupted a flight to the Canary Islands, per The Guardian. The 160 passengers on board had to 'face unnecessary disruption as well as [lose] a full day of their holiday," the company said at the time, according to the outlet. Over in the U.S., unruly passenger incidents reported to the Federal Aviation Administration peaked in 2021, when 5,973 were reported. A total of 2,102 were reported in 2024, with 699 accounted for so far in 2025. From 2021 to 2023, the FAA levied a total of $20.9 million in fines against "unruly" passengers. Unruly passengers can face a felony conviction if referred to the FBI, fines of up to $37,000 per violation and be placed on an airline's internal no-fly list. "Former FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker reiterates that the FAA has zero tolerance for unruly passenger behavior. Dangerous passengers put everyone at risk," the agency shared in a statement on its website. "Threatening or violent behavior can distract and disrupt crew members from their primary responsibility — to ensure the safety of all passengers." Read the original article on People
