Hornets draft pick Kon Knueppel calls entering NBA 'blessing from God'
Kon Knueppel heard his name called fairly early during the NBA Draft on Wednesday night. The Charlotte Hornets selected the former Duke Blue Devils star with the No. 4 pick. He went three picks after his teammate, Cooper Flagg, was taken No. 1 by the Dallas Mavericks. Knueppel was with his brothers as he spoke to ESPN following the selection and praised the Lord for being able to turn professional. "I mean it's such a blessing from God to be able to enter the NBA, but to be able to share it with your family is beyond comprehension. It's such a special moment for us and for me," he said. Kash Knueppel was one of Kon's four brothers who was with him on draft night. He was asked to hype up his brother. "It's awesome. It's a blessing from God. He'll have fun – every minute of it. It'll be awesome to watch him from home," he said. Kon Knuppel briefly mentioned his Christian faith in an interview with Rivals in February 2023. He said it was a big reason why he was considering Virginia at the time before he ultimately decided to join Duke. Tony Bennett was the head coach of the Cavaliers at the time. "I've told a couple of people this, but when I went on my visit there, coach (Tony) Bennett said that he wanted me to know that Virginia is a faith-based program," he said at the time. "That's something that's stuck with me, being a Christian. "That's something that's really important to me, so that was awesome to hear and something I don't always hear. They've also got a great, great program. They've been the best in the ACC for a long time now." Knueppel played one season at Duke. He averaged 14.4 points and 4 rebounds per game. 2025 NBA Draft best available players in Round 2 including Kalkbrenner and Broome
With round 1 in the books of the NBA Draft, there's still plenty of NBA talent left in this year's draft. Here's a look at the best available players for round 2: 2025 NBA Draft Best Remaining Prospects Ryan Kalkbrenner (Creighton) Overall Rank: #23 Strengths: Strength, Rebounder, Upside Kalkbrenner could easily go in the top 20 given he's over seven-feet tall and shoots 34.4% from three. He won Big East Defensive Player of the Year four times and has the makings of a Boston Celtic written all over him. LeBron James said that Cooper Flagg is "going to be amazing". Colin Cowherd discusses Flagg's potential in the NBA and if he'll have an immediate impact with the Dallas Mavericks if they select him. Johni Broome (Auburn) Overall Rank: #25 Strengths: Scorer, Competitor The SEC Player of the Year, Broome shows up when it matters. In the Elite 8, he became the first player with 25 points and 10 rebounds on 75% shooting to send his team to the Final Four since Hakeem Olajuwon in 1984. Maxime Raynaud (Stanford) Overall Rank: #27 Strengths: Rebounder, Shooter, Strength The 7'1 Frenchman out of Stanford was the only player in Division-I to average 20 PPG and 10 RPG this year. The Spurs Kept It Simple, And Won Big-Time In First Round Of NBA Draft
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 25: Dylan Harper (R) shakes hands with NBA commissioner Adam Silver (L) ... More after being drafted second overall by the San Antonio Spurs during the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft at Barclays Center on June 25, 2025 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and/or using this photograph, user is consenting to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. (Photo by) The first round of the 2025 NBA draft has come and gone, and the San Antonio Spurs - who came in armed with #2 and #14 - walked away as big winners by simply taking the best available player at each position. Let's get into it. Dylan Harper, #2 Look, it might have been obvious, but given that the Spurs were rumored to be considering a trade at that spot, sticking with the pick is a win. Harper is a big 6'6 lead-guard, with a 6'10 wingspan, who has All-NBA upside, and could become the perfect long-term partner for Victor Wembanyama. The son of former NBA star Ron Harper, Dylan has played like a seasoned veteran since stepping onto the scene at Rutgers. He's an uncanny shot-maker near the basket, is an underrated playmaker, has significant defensive upside, and his 220-pound frame is able to absorb contact as he goes in for shots. While his three-point shooting still needs some work, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with his mechanics, and an organization like the Spurs should be able to iron things out, and optimize his capabilities in that area. Carter Bryant, #14 With the final pick in the lottery, the Spurs went with Bryant, a 6'8 wing out of Arizona who has a 7-foot wingspan. Bryant will fool a lot of people, as his numbers (6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds) look extremely pedestrian. But there's a reason for it. His role was never to be one of the main offensive pillars, but instead function as a defensive-minded role player, who'd occasionally hit some long-range shots. He did so at a 37.1% clip, and the role he'll play in San Antonio is likely going to mimic the one he played in college. Bryant's defensive skills are noteworthy. He'll overpower offensive players via his 215-pound frame, play passing lanes, block shots, and he can switch into virtually everyone. With the Spurs in need of both long-range shooting, and defensive wing depth, Bryant was not only the best available player, but also represented the best fit. Sometimes things just work out. Day 2 of the draft The Spurs have no picks in the second round, but seeing as Saint Joseph's forward Rasheer Fleming is still on the board, it would behoove them to explore trading into the second round, to see if they can become the new home for the 6'10 power forward. But, even if they don't, and Day 2 is silent for San Antonio, they still come away as winners. Unless noted otherwise, all stats via PBPStats, Cleaning the Glass or Basketball-Reference.
