Pope Leo's AI warning
The Big Story
Pope Leo XIV sounded the alarm this week over artificial intelligence (AI)'s potential impact on young people's intellectual and neurological development, building upon one of the main focuses of his papacy.
© Vatican Media via Associated Press
The first American pope delivered the message to an annual conference on AI and ethics, part of which took place in the Vatican this week.
'All of us, I am sure, are concerned for children and young people, and the possible consequences of the use of AI on their intellectual and neurological development,' the pope said.
'Our youth must be helped, and not hindered, in their journey towards maturity and true responsibility.'
The pontiff described how new generations have unprecedented, quick access to data and information, while noting they must not confuse this access to data with intelligence.
'In the end, authentic wisdom has more to do with recognizing the true meaning of life, than with the availability of data,' Leo said.
Leo acknowledged AI has been used in positive ways, pointing to research in health care and science.
But he warned of the possibility the emerging technology can be used for 'selfish gain at the expense of others' or 'to foment conflict and aggression.'
The pope said AI, especially generative AI, 'also raises troubling questions of its possible repercussions on humanity's openness to truth and beauty, on our distinctive ability to grasp and process reality.'
Since being elected pope in early May, Leo has made the risks of AI on humanity a key priority of his papacy. In his first official address to cardinals in May, the pope warned of the challenges AI poses to the 'defense of human dignity, justice and labor.'
The mission resembles that of Pope Leo XIII, who pushed for workers' rights amid the industrial revolution, and a Vatican spokesperson told media outlets the name choice was 'not a casual reference.'

Coinbase secures EU crypto license
© Richard Drew, Associated Press
Welcome to Crypto Corner, a daily feature focused on digital currency and its outlook in Washington.
Crypto exchange Coinbase has obtained a license to operate in the European Union (EU) under the bloc's relatively new regulatory framework for digital assets.
The company announced Friday that it has secured a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license, allowing it to operate in all 27 European member countries.
Coinbase also plans to establish its European crypto hub in Luxembourg, after receiving its license from the country's Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF).
'This is a pivotal moment for Coinbase, Luxembourg, and Europe's growing crypto ecosystem,' the exchange said in a press release. 'We look forward to continuing to contribute to Europe's vibrant economy, unlocking growth, and increasing economic freedom across the region.'
As crypto firms seek MiCA licenses in Europe, the U.S. continues its slow forward march toward establishing its own regulatory framework.
The Senate voted 68-30 Tuesday to pass the GENIUS Act, a bill creating regulatory rules of the road for one form of cryptocurrency, known as stablecoins.
President Trump threw his weight behind the legislation Wednesday, urging the House to quickly pass the bill without any major additions.
However, his call stands at odds with the hopes of some in Congress and the industry, who had been hoping to tie stablecoin legislation to another bill laying out a regulatory framework for the rest of the crypto market.

Building a $25,000 Tech Stock Portfolio That Could Thrive for a Decade
Written by Jitendra Parashar at The Motley Fool Canada If you want to build long-term wealth through tech stocks, the key is to focus on strong fundamentals and stick to the Foolish Investing Philosophy to give your portfolio the time it needs to grow. The tech sector could be volatile in the short term, but over a 10-year horizon, it has the potential to deliver market-beating returns. In this article, I'll highlight two tech stocks to consider today that have the potential to turn your $25,000 investment into something much larger over the next decade. Kinaxis (TSX:KXS) could be a great tech stock for investors planning a portfolio that's built to last. The Ottawa-based software firm focuses on artificial intelligence (AI)-powered supply chain solutions for businesses. The company delivered a solid first-quarter financial performance, with its total sales rising 11% YoY (year over year) to US$132.8 million and adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) jumping 46% to US$33.1 million. That drove its profit margin and earnings per share to record levels. More importantly, Kinaxis reaffirmed its full-year outlook and expects up to US$550 million in total revenue and a healthy adjusted EBITDA margin of up to 25%. Its recurring revenue model also looks strong, with annual recurring revenue climbing 14% to US$372 million in the latest quarter. And with the help of multi-year contracts and high customer retention, the tech company has strong visibility into future cash flow. Moreover, Kinaxis is doubling down on AI features through its Maestro platform and recently partnered with Databricks to bring even more intelligence and speed to enterprise decision-making. That's on top of its new tariff response solution, which aims to help global companies navigate one of the most complex issues in supply chain planning today. KXS stock has climbed nearly 34% over the last year to currently trade at $201.30 per share with a market cap of $5.7 billion. In my opinion, its consistent growth and expanding margins could be rewarding for patient investors willing to hold it over the next decade. (TSXV:TOI) is another tech stock worth considering if you're building a long-term portfolio. The tech firm mainly develops and manages specialized software for niche markets across Europe, supporting sectors like finance, education, and healthcare. In the first quarter this year, its total revenue rose 16% YoY to €355.6 million with the help of 4% organic growth. Similarly, its net quarterly profit climbed to €38.8 million. While the bulk of this growth came from new acquisitions, the tech company's consistent organic performance also signals a stable underlying business. To boost its financial growth prospects, Topicus is actively deploying capital. For example, it recently invested €168 million in Asseco Poland, which could open up new growth opportunities for Topicus. After rallying 48% over the last year, TOI stock is currently trading at $165.03 per share with a market cap of $13.7 billion. With consistent cash flow and a strong acquisition model, Topicus stock could keep compounding value over time, especially for investors focused on the long game. JD Vance boasts Trump will call in National Guard to quell riots ‘again if he has to' following appeals court victory
President Trump will not hesitate to send in the National Guard 'again' after an appeals court ruled the commander in chief can maintain control of thousands of troops he deployed to the City of Angeles in response to anti-ICE riots, Vice President JD Vance declared Friday. 'If you enforce your own laws and if you protect federal law enforcement, we're not going to send in the National Guard — because it's unnecessary,' Vance said during remarks outside a federal building in Los Angeles. 'But if you let violent rioters burn great American cities to the ground, then of course we're going to send federal law enforcement in to protect people.' 3 Vice President JD Vance visited Los Angeles on Friday, a city that has become the epicenter of anti-ICE riots in response to President Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. The Sun 'The president's going to do it again if he has to, but hopefully it won't be necessary,' the vice president warned. Vance noted that the 'rioting has gotten a lot better' since Trump dispatched active-duty service members to LA, but he warned that local officials are 'worried that it's going to flare back up.' Los Angeles has become the epicenter of anti-ICE riots in response to Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. Trump deployed troops to the City of Angeles to tamp down clashes between rioters and federal authorities seeking out criminal illegal migrants. The vice president toured a multi-agency federal joint operations center and an FBI mobile command center currently being used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials during his trip to Los Angeles. Vance was briefed by leaders of the 14 different agencies — including ICE, Department of Defense, Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security, Los Angeles Police Department and California Highway Patrol — using the operations center to coordinate immigration enforcement actions in LA. 3 Vance told reporters outside a Los Angeles federal building that, 'If you enforce your own laws and if you protect federal law enforcement, we're not going to send in the National Guard — because it's unnecessary.' The veep also met with some of the 200 active-duty Marines deployed to the city and tasked with protecting federal property and federal personnel. They will be joined by an additional 500 Marines and 2,000 more Guardsmen, on top of the 2,000 National Guard troops already active in the city. US District Court Judge Charles Breyer had previously ruled that Trump likely exceeded his constitutional authority by dispatching the soldiers despite opposition from California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom — marking the first deployment of a state National Guard by the president without the governor's permission since 1965. The San Francisco-based Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals, however, suggested in its ruling that Trump lawfully exercised his statutory authority in taking federal control of the guard, as the violence and chaos in Los Angeles warranted the administration's decision to do so. 3 Vance also said the rioting has calmed down a bit since President Trump sent the National Guard into the area. The Sun Trump called the decision a 'BIG WIN' in a post on Truth Social. The president has previously suggested that Los Angeles would be 'burning to the ground' if he hadn't sent in the Marines and National Guard to quell the anti-ICE riots. ICE has continued carrying out enforcement operations in LA despite the protests. During his brief remarks, Vance said that he wished Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) — who was thrown out of a Department of Homeland Security press conference last week and handcuffed after interrupting Secretary Kristi Noem — had been present, but he mixed up the senator's name. 'I was hoping Jose Padilla would be here to ask a question, but unfortunately, I guess he decided not to show up because there wasn't the theater — and that's all it is.'
