New York, June 2 (Xinhua) -- A parade was held in Manhattan, New York City (NYC), to celebrate the traditional culture of Asian Americans on Sunday, drawing hundreds of participants and spectators.
The celebration was hosted by the Chinese-American organization Better Chinatown Society, as part of national celebrations of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, which is observed in May in the United States.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Chinese Consul General in New York Chen Li, and representatives from the Better Chinatown Society addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange and community empowerment for Asian and Chinese Americans.
The celebration plays a positive role in uniting community members in the United States to defend their rights, spread culture and strengthen the friendship between the United States and China, and other global countries, according to Chen.
"We should uphold the spirit of openness and inclusiveness, respect different systems, develop international people exchanges and cooperation and work together to build a community with a shared future," Chen noted.
The national anthems of China and the United States were played during the event, stirring patriotic feelings among the audience from diverse backgrounds.
The performers showcased lion dances, Sichuan opera face-changing and Cantonese singing, drawing rounds of applause.
The event attracted thousands of citizens to line the streets and watch. Norma Anderson, a visitor from Sacramento, California, said she was particularly impressed by the lion dance and the variety of traditional Chinese costumes.
"Every era and region in China and Asia has different clothing, which is so beautiful and amazing," said Anderson.
Jimmy Li, a Chinese American who lives in Flushing, NYC, said the celebration reminded him of his hometown.
"I'm an immigrant from Guangdong, and hearing Cantonese songs in New York moved me to tears," Li said. "This is cultural transmission."
This is the fourth Asian Heritage parade held in New York. May was officially designated AAPI Heritage Month in 1992 in the United States.
The month-long observance provides an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the AAPI community's contributions to American culture, society and history over the centuries.

Actress Fan Bingbing Enters Malaysia Book Of Records For Boosting Melaka's Digital Image

A year ago, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing (范冰冰) was announced as Melaka's tourism ambassador, sparking mixed reactions. However, it seems the controversial appointment paid off for the Malaysian state. Earlier this week, Melaka Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh revealed that he had travelled to Hong Kong to meet with the Chinese actress to award the star a certificate from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR). Fan Bingbing was recognised for 'Largest Digital Hits for Malaysian Tourism on WeChat Platform Using Celebrity Ambassador' after Melaka recorded 1.5 billion digital impressions with the 'Malacca x Fan Bingbing' campaign. Ab Rauf Yusof said that Fan Bingbing's appointment as tourism ambassador also helped lead to a significant increase in tourists to Melaka, particularly from China. The Chief Minister shared that the state had 204,818 Chinese tourists by December 2023 but welcomed 664,687 Chinese tourists by December 2024. He also said that her ambassadorship had catapulted Melaka into the global tourism spotlight. Earlier this year, it was announced that Melaka will be the host for the World Tourism Day (WTD) 2025 and the World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2025 this 27th to 29th September 2025 (Saturday to Monday). While unconfirmed, Ab Rauf Yusof said that Fan Bingbing's appointment as the state's tourism ambassador had helped Melaka achieve this milestone. Fan Bingbing and her Malaysian manager, Jersey Chong, have expressed thanks towards the Melaka state government for the MBOR recognition. In an Instagram post, Jersey wrote, 'Gratitude to the Malacca state government for the unwavering trust, and to Bingbing for consistently promoting cultural exchange with sincerity and professionalism. We look forward to crafting more remarkable chapters together.'. While Fan Bingbing's appointment as Melaka's tourism ambassador received mixed reactions, we can't deny the impact that the actress has had. Here's to hoping that the historic state will continue to become a must-visit destination for international travellers. Age Is Just A Number? Aunty Bowls A Strike… Dressed In Kain Batik

Subscribe to our FREE As time passes, many sports lovers are left disappointed when their bodies can no longer perform the way they once did. Physical decline can be frustrating—but for some, the strength and skill remain. That was certainly the case for an elderly woman who recently went viral on TikTok for bowling at Ole Ole Super Bowl in Ole Ole Shopping Centre, Shah Alam. The senior citizen was captured on camera confidently throwing a bowling ball down the lane—and scoring a perfect strike. What made the moment even more impressive? She did it while wearing a kain batik. While that traditional wrap might limit movement for most, this aunty made it look effortless—like it was just a walk in the park. After delivering the strike, she appeared completely unfazed, nonchalant if you must, as if it were just another casual game. Her calm reaction suggested she's no stranger to the sport. As the saying goes, experience beats talent. A similar story Her effortless strike brought to mind Carmen Salvino—the oldest player to compete in the Professional Bowling Association (PBA). Credit: Professional Bowling Association The American bowler, who has won 17 titles throughout his career, helped establish the tournament in which he competed. In 2020, he took part in the Tournament of Champions at the age of 86, finishing 59th out of 62 participants. Although he didn't win, competing at a professional level in his 80s was impressive enough. Still, even the oldest pro bowler wouldn't likely attempt a strike while wearing a kain batik—something this aunty pulled off with style. In the comments section, many netizens expressed their admiration, praising her energy and courage to keep playing sports despite her age. Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . Clement also called on all parents to be more involved in their children's school life. 'A round of applause, a few words of encouragement, or just being present – these small gestures are powerful sources of motivation for our children,' he said. Guest of Honour Dr Tan Hui San, herself a parent of two Kian Kok alums, shared her emotional connection to the school.
