
Expedia shares fall after soft US travel demand leads to revenue miss
May 9 (Reuters) - Shares of Expedia (EXPE.O), opens new tab fell 9.2% before the bell on Friday, after the online travel-booking platform missed Wall Street estimates for quarterly revenue due to weaker than expected demand in the U.S.
Expedia joins its peers as the travel industry braces for a slowdown ahead of the peak summer season, with economic uncertainty — driven by the ongoing tariff war and elevated interest rates — weighing on consumer spending.
At the end of April, hotel operator Hilton (HLT.N), opens new tab cut its annual forecast for room revenue growth, and vacation rental company Airbnb (ABNB.O), opens new tab said earlier this month that the booking window was shortening, signaling consumer uncertainty and caution in travel spending.
"It's all just a bit more pronounced in the case of Expedia with a bigger US presence than peers," said BTIG analyst Jake Fuller.
The Seattle-based company reported revenue of $2.98 billion for the first quarter, below analysts' expectations of $3.01 billion, according to LSEG compiled data.
"It's clear that US travel has downshifted and to the extent trade/macro uncertainty lingers longer, it is less likely this plays out like the summer 2024 'growth scare'," Barclays analysts wrote in a note.
The U.S. travel industry experienced a "growth scare" last summer, as elevated travel costs and uncertainty surrounding the presidential election dampened demand during what is typically a busy season.
Expedia reported an adjusted profit of 40 cents per share for the quarter ended March 31, compared with analysts' estimate of 32 cents.
At least four brokerages cut their price targets on the stock, bringing the median to $201.33, according to data compiled by LSEG.
So far this year, Expedia shares have fallen 9.3%, compared with a 3.7% fall in the S&P 500 index during the same period.

Why millionaires are planning to escape from New York
The morning after Zohran Mamdani's surprise victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, Tom O'Donoghue's phone was ringing off the hook. O'Donoghue, who runs a luxury construction firm in the Hamptons — the summer playground for rich New Yorkers — said his clients were in 'complete disbelief' that a socialist was suddenly the favourite to win November's general election. 'One of my clients has 150 commercial buildings in the city and he just told me that he had contacted his attorney this morning. They're getting out of New York,' he said. • Meet Zohran Mamdani, the man who promises to make NYC affordable Though the former New York governor Andrew Cuomo had been the favourite to win Tuesday's primary, Mamdani snared 43.5 per cent of the vote, compared with Cuomo's 36.4 per cent. By 10.30pm local time, the ex-governor had conceded, saying of his opponent: 'Tonight is his night. He deserved it — he won.' Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman, promised to freeze rent on stabilised apartments, impose a 2 per cent wealth tax on New York residents who earn more than $1 million a year, and raise the corporate tax from 7.25 per cent to 11.5 per cent. New York is home to approximately 350,000 millionaires and 123 billionaires, according to Forbes, and many are seriously thinking about leaving the city. Bill Ackman, one of New York's most vocal billionaires, has long said that a Mamdani victory could lead to an exodus. Dollar lingers near 3-1/2-year low as traders bet on US rate cuts
SINGAPORE, June 27 (Reuters) - The dollar drifted on Friday, hovering near its lowest level in 3-1/2 years against the euro and sterling, as traders wagered on deeper U.S. rate cuts while awaiting trade deals ahead of a July deadline for President Donald Trump's tariffs. Market focus this week has been on U.S. monetary policy. The prospect of Trump announcing the next Federal Reserve Chair, who is expected to be more dovish, earlier than usual to undermine the current chair Jerome Powell has raised odds of the central bank cutting rates. Powell, whose term ends in May, was also interpreted as being more dovish this week in testimony to U.S. Congress, adding to expectation of more rate cuts. Traders are now pricing in 64 basis points of easing this year versus 46 bps expected on Friday. "The sooner a replacement is announced for Powell, the sooner he could be perceived to be a 'lame duck'," said Carol Kong, a currency strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that Trump has toyed with the idea of selecting and announcing Powell's replacement by September or October, a move analysts say could lead to the person operating as a shadow Fed chair, undermining Powell's influence.
