Fundraiser to help Filipino community in Ballymena following riots raises over £9k

Belfast Telegraph17 hours ago

Police came under attack on Thursday evening for a fourth consecutive night in Northern Ireland as disorder spread through multiple towns.
Missiles were thrown at officers after a protest in Portadown on Thursday, continuing a trend that was sparked earlier in the week in Ballymena.
In Ballymena, some Filipino workers in the area began putting stickers on their doors that declared their nationality, in an apparent bid to avoid attack.
The fundraiser was launched by Zuzanna Dziwulska after a series of attacks on Filipino families in Ballymena and Cullybackey, including an arson attack on mechanic Kevin Rous's car.
The GoFundMe page read: 'We all know about the incidents which have been on going in Ballymena. This fundraiser has no political intent.
'I hope as residents of Ballymena/Cullybackey we can agree innocent people should not be punished by the actions of others.
'Therefore, I am hoping to fundraise a small amount of money and get in contact with Kevin Rous in Cullybackey who has had his family unfortunately hit by an attack.
'Everyone should feel safe in Ballymena and hopefully we can help get this man's life back on track.'

Zuzanna said the fundraiser had 'gone way over target in 24 hours' and that she had been in touch with Kevi's family and was arranging to transfer the funds.
She added: 'I have also been reached by the wider Filipino community so it would be great if we could also give others affected a helping hand.'
A separate fundraiser launched by 20-year-old Matthew Obillo, a Filipino man living in Ireland, has raised nearly €1,000 to support Kevin and his family.
Matthew said he came across a 'heart-breaking video' about Kevin's story, which 'deeply affected' him, despite never having met him.
He added: 'My own parents worked incredibly hard to move to Ireland before I was born, and to this day, they put in long hours to support our family.
"So when I saw someone else, likely working just as hard to provide for his loved ones, go through something so cruel, it hit me hard. Kevin wasn't even home because he was out working, and now his family is left scared and traumatized in a place that should feel safe.'
Matthew said all proceeds would go directly to Kevin and his family adding that the funds would be used to 'provide support in the form of essential supplies, accommodation help or whatever else they may need.'
'Let's show Kevin and his family that there's still kindness out there,' he added.

EXCLUSIVE Retired builder, 60, drowns in hotel pool while playing with grandchildren just hours before son's dream Cyprus wedding

A British grandfather died just hours before his son's wedding in Cyprus - after drowning in a hotel pool while playing with his grandchildren. John Fazackerley, from Cheshire, had flown to Paphos to watch his son Sean marry fiancée Vicky in a long-planned ceremony. But tragedy struck the day before the wedding when the retired builder, 60, failed to resurface during a game in the water with the youngsters. Guests rushed to help and performed CPR at the poolside at around 2.30pm on May 25. Sean, 30, claims resort staff struggled to locate a defibrillator - and when they finally did, none of them knew how to use it. He told MailOnline: 'We ended up finding it ourselves in a cupboard near reception, and a family member used it.' An ambulance arrived about 15 minutes later and took John to Paphos General Hospital - but the family say they weren't allowed to travel with him. In the days since his death, Sean and his family have launched a GoFundMe page to raise money to bring John's body home - saying they've been 'let down' by local authorities. John was taken to Paphos General Hospital, 15 minutes away from the beach side resort and the worried family followed along in a car. But Sean said when they arrived but was chaos and hotel staff demanded John's passport details which the family didn't have to hand because the documents were securely stored in a safe in the hotel room. As they tried to locate the passports, Sean told MailOnline how his mother, Julie, was the only one allowed in to the hospital with his father. Meanwhile the rest of the Fazackerley family were forced to sit outside on plastic chairs as they waited for news of their father. Sean said: 'We followed in a taxi and we had to register him with his passport details but it took time because my mum was in the hospital - she wasn't in the hotel and my dad had set the safe pin so we couldn't access it but the hospital wouldn't move forward until they had the passport details.' He added: 'We had to sit outside on chairs in the reception.' Sean went on to describe how the earth-shattering news of his father's death was delivered to the worried family and slammed the hospital for dealing with them so offhandedly. The IT manager said: 'We were called over and they said they couldn't save him but the door wasn't shut and it was in public so people could walk past and hear. Guests rushed to help John, performing CPR at the poolside before he was taken to the hospital where the family were told he had tragically died (John pictured with his wife Julie) 'We got five minutes with him and they just didn't treat us with any empathy.' Sean is now raising funds to bring his father home and confessed he is unsure when his father will be brought back in to the UK because of confusion over the postmortem from Cyprus. He said he feel forgotten and frustrated but has vowed to keep pursuing the Cypriot government and police. 'We feel forgotten, the way we have been treated, they only wanted to know about the funeral,' he explained. Despite the shock of his father's death, Sean decided to go ahead with the wedding to his fiancée and made sure to include a special tribute to John. He confessed that his father had been particularly excited for an ice cold beer following the ceremony and so in his honour they placed a family snap of John next to a cooler of beer and drank in his honour at the party. He said: 'We haven't had a funeral yet but we paid tribute to him in the wedding The one thing he said he was excited for was the bar and so we set up a picture of him next to an ice bucket full of beers so he was there with us'. Sean added that life without his father has been difficult, especially for his mother who has moved in with him and his new bride Vicky. 'Now we're just trying to support my mum and she's moved in with us for a bit,' Sean explained. He added that the doting grandfather is missed by the entire family and especially the grandchildren. Newly-married Sean said: 'He was a very family-orientated man and his final moments were with his grandkids, playing. 'He loved fishing and spending time with the grandkids and we miss him.'

Man 'arrested' after Welsh dad left fighting for life in Thailand

Man 'arrested' after Welsh dad left fighting for life in Thailand 'It is a terrible situation. Especially when Ashton is so far away, we do feel helpless' Ashton Jones' trip was only booked at the last minute and he didn't have any travel insurance (Image: Wales News Service ) Police have reportedly made an arrest after a Welshman suffered a life-threatening head injury while on holiday in Thailand. Ashton Jones, a 29-year-old from Cwmbran, travelled to Bangkok on May 30 before being admitted to hospital on June 3 having suddenly disappeared while on a night out. His friends spent hours searching for Ashton after he went missing from the nightclub they were in — only to find him in Chonburi Hospital on a life support machine and having emergency brain surgery. ‌ Now Ashton's grandmother Beverley Walker has told WalesOnline that Thai police have informed the family of an arrest. She said police gave no detail other than that the man is suspected of assaulting Ashton. ‌ Ashton did not regain consciousness until Monday — six days after his admission — but remains bedbound and unable to talk. The young dad-of-two, who is epileptic, has been having fits while in hospital and has been "out of it", said his gran. "It is a terrible situation," added 68-year-old Beverley. "Especially when Ashton is so far away, we do feel helpless." The language barrier means the cost of his treatment is unclear to the family but they understand it to be substantial. They have been desperately trying to raise funds for Ashton's care and to bring him home — with a Gofundme page so far raising almost £15,000 towards a £50,000 target — and his father is due to fly to Thailand tonight to be at his side. Ashton travelled to Thailand with a lifelong friend and on arrival met up with another friend. "It was a spur-of-the-moment holiday. Ashton was really enjoying himself, sending us pictures of himself riding elephants." ‌ After becoming separated from Ashton in a nightclub his friends spent hours looking for him and eventually found him in hospital. One of the friends is still in Thailand acting as a point of contact with the hospital though he is unable to speak Thai. Ashton Jones with his grandmother Beverley Walker (Image: Wales News Service ) 'We have already put together life savings for medical bills, flights, travel, accommodation to be with him but would never be able to afford to get him home to better healthcare and his family," said Beverley, whose fundraiser can be found here. ‌ 'We all as a family are worried sick with fear for Ashton and how we can bring him home. So please any donations made towards getting Ashton home is appreciated beyond words can describe." A Foreign Office spokesman said: 'We are supporting a British man who has been hospitalised in Thailand and are in contact with the local authorities.' Royal Thai Police has been approached for a statement. Article continues below Get daily breaking news updates on your phone by joining our WhatsApp community here. 'Cause of death' of Brit mum, 28, whose heart was removed after dying on holiday

Beth Martin, 28, from Portsmouth, flew to Turkey with her husband and their two children for what was meant to be a dream getaway - but became delirious on arrival and died the following day A bombshell report has revealed the supposed cause of death of a British mum who died suddenly on a family holiday in Turkey - where she had her heart removed without her family's permission, her devastated loved ones claim. Beth Martin, 28, from Portsmouth, had flown out to Turkey on April 27 with her husband Luke and their two children, aged eight and five, for what was meant to be a dream getaway. But within 24 hours of arriving, she became delirious and was rushed to hospital. Despite being moved into intensive care, she tragically died the next day, on April 28. ‌ ‌ Now, weeks later, a forensic report has revealed the supposed cause of her sudden death. The findings, published by Turkey's Forensic Medicine Institution and reported by local outlet Sozcu, claim Beth died as a result of food poisoning and its complications, and found 'no evidence' of traumatic injury. The report, published by the Forensic Medicine Institution, said: 'It has been concluded that Martin's death occurred as a result of food poisoning and its complications.' It added that a full examination of Beth's heart had been completed, and that tissue samples from the heart are being handed back to UK authorities today. On the day Beth was admitted to hospital, her husband, Luke Martin, was allegedly banned from seeing his wife and given little to no information about her condition. He was then accused of poisoning her by Turkish police and subjected to interrogation - though later cleared of any wrongdoing. 'To top it off, I had to break the news to my babies that their mum isn't coming home. It broke me,' Luke wrote on social media. 'Two weeks ago, me, my wife and two kids set out for a family holiday to Turkey. Only three of us made it back. I lost my wife, my children lost their mum, we lost the biggest piece of the puzzle that was our family.' According to a GoFundMe page set up by relatives, the Martin family were left in the dark about the severity of Beth's condition and were forced to carry her body in a bag through the hospital. When told it could take more than two weeks to repatriate her remains, Luke paid thousands of pounds to bring her body back on the same flight as his. Doctors are understood to have raised concerns about Beth's heart before her death, but her loved ones say they were not made aware of what was happening. A UK post-mortem later confirmed her heart had been removed in Turkey without permission, according to her loved ones. Luke has since described the ordeal as 'the worst and most traumatic week of [his] entire life', adding that the loss of his wife has left the family shattered beyond words.
