Ukraine on Tuesday said it will agree to a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, after a Saudi-hosted meeting between delegations from Kyiv and Washington. In exchange, the US has agreed to "immediately" restore intelligence sharing, according to a joint statement by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry. President Donald Trump "wants the war to end, and I think today, Ukraine has taken a concrete step in that regard", US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said after the meeting. "We hope the Russians will reciprocate." Mr Trump welcomed the apparent breakthrough and said he hoped Russia would make a deal. "If we can get Russia to do it, that'll be great. If we can't, we just keep going on and people are going to get killed, lots of people," he said at the White House. He added that he would talk to the Russia President Vladimir Putin "this week". "It takes two to tango, so hopefully he'll also agree," Mr Trump said. Delegations from the US and Ukraine met in Jeddah, after talks at the White House last month ended disastrously when he and Vice President JD Vance assailed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for appearing "disrespectful" by not saying thank you enough. "It's a big difference between the last visit you saw in the Oval Office," Mr Trump said adding that he would invite Mr Zelenskyy back to the White House. The US last week paused intelligence sharing with Kyiv, after a halt in military aid, moves that appeared to be aimed at forcing the US ally to the negotiating table. Tuesday's developments come more than three years after Russia invaded Ukraine. Kyiv wants to demonstrate that Mr Zelenskyy is aligned with Mr Trump's push for a swift end to the conflict. The US President has accused Mr Zelenskyy of not being prepared for peace, with the US administration holding direct talks with Russia. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said negotiators 'got into substantive details on how this war is going to permanently end", including long-term security guarantees. "The Ukrainian delegation today made something very clear, that they share President Trump's vision for peace," he said. The Kremlin did not immediately offer a response. Russia has said it is ready to cease hostilities on condition that Ukraine drops its bid to join Nato and recognises regions that Moscow occupies as Russian. Russia has captured nearly a fifth of Ukraine's territory. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha posted images on X that showed officials from Kyiv walking to the meeting, hours after Ukrainian forces launched their largest drone attack on Moscow to date. He also posted photos from the talks. 'We see this meeting as a great opportunity to advance peace and develop the Ukraine-US strategic partnership," Mr Sybiha said in the post. "The constructive atmosphere proves we can use this opportunity. Ukraine wants peace as no one else." Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan represented the kingdom at the talks. The meeting was also attended by Andriy Yermak, Mr Zelenskyy's chief of staff, who is leading the Ukrainian delegation. Mr Zelenskyy met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday, with the Ukrainian leader thanking the kingdom for its role in peace efforts. They discussed working to achieve a "sustainable, fair and comprehensive" peace in Ukraine, according to a joint statement published by state news agency SPA. During the meeting in Jeddah, Prince Mohammed expressed Saudi support for international efforts to resolve the crisis in Ukraine and achieve peace, SPA reported.

Russia, Ukraine swap first prisoners in large-scale exchange
Russia and Ukraine on Monday swapped a first group of captured soldiers — part of an agreement reached during peace talks that appeared to be in doubt over the weekend. The deal to exchange prisoners of war and repatriate the bodies of killed fighters was the only concrete agreement reached at the talks, which have failed to lead to a breakthrough towards ending the three-year war. Progress has stalled. Russia has issued tough conditions for halting its invasion and has repeatedly rejected calls for an unconditional ceasefire. "Today an exchange began, which will continue in several stages over the coming days," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on social media. He posted images of soldiers draped in Ukrainian flags, cheering and hugging. "Among those we are bringing back now are the wounded, the severely wounded, and those under the age of 25," he added. Russia's defence ministry also confirmed the swap was part of "agreements reached on 2 June in Istanbul". Neither side said how many prisoners were released. After the talks in Istanbul, both said it would involve more than 1,000 captured soldiers, making it the largest exchange of the three-year war. Russia said Kyiv was refusing to take back bodies of dead soldiers, 1,200 of which it said were waiting in refrigerated trucks near the border. Talks 'pointless' Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine triggered the biggest European conflict since World War II, forced millions to flee their homes and decimated much of eastern and southern Ukraine. Pressed by US President Donald Trump to end the conflict, the two sides have opened direct negotiations for the first time in more than three years in search of an agreement. But they appear as far apart as ever from an agreement. Lebanon denies reports of US-Israel deal to withdraw UN peacekeepers
A Lebanese official has denied reports in Israeli media claiming that Israel and the United States have agreed to end the mandate of UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. 'This is not serious. We have sources in Washington who completely denied it,' the official told The National, speaking on condition of anonymity. The UN Security Council is expected to vote in August on a draft resolution to extend the mandate of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) – a 10,000-strong peacekeeping force posted in southern areas bordering Israel. The Jerusalem Post, a conservative Israeli daily, reported on Sunday that the US administration has decided not to renew Unifil's mandate, and that Israel reportedly 'did not try to convince them otherwise'. 'I don't know where these reports are coming from, but they won't lead anywhere. The presence of Unifil is a necessity for everyone,' the Lebanese source added. The official said the renewal process had already begun at the request of Lebanese authorities and was expected to proceed smoothly. Unifil peacekeepers were deployed in 1978 after Israel invaded south Lebanon, and the force is tasked with monitoring violations from both sides of the border. Its area of operations extends from the Blue Line – the UN-delineated border between Lebanon and Israel – to the Litani River, about 30km from the border. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has openly criticised Unifil in several instances, calling on the United Nations to withdraw its peacekeepers from Lebanon and accusing the mission of serving as human shields for Hezbollah during the recent conflict in Lebanon. Unifil has reported numerous breaches of the US-brokered truce deal between Israel and Hezbollah that took effect in November, ending 14 months of conflict, including two months of intense Israeli bombardment. These include nearly 2,200 Israeli airspace incursions, more than 40 air strikes, and close to 1,300 Israeli ground activities in southern Lebanon, a spokesman for the peacekeeping force told The National in April. On the Lebanese side, Unifil has reported 19 missiles launched from Lebanon into Israel. The force has also found Hezbollah weapons caches and rocket launchers on an almost daily basis. Unifil reports violations of UN Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 conflict, not the latest truce on which it is based. The peacekeeping force holds regular meetings with the ceasefire monitoring committee established under the latest truce, which is led by the United States and includes France, the Israeli military and the Lebanese army. Despite this, Israel has continued to strike Lebanon, including the capital, Beirut, claiming that it is striking Hezbollah military sites that violate the agreement.
