How ousted Liberal leader John Pesutto plans to avoid bankruptcy and pay a $2.3million legal bill after losing high-stakes defamation case

Daily Mail16-05-2025

Former Liberal leader John Pesutto has launched a GoFundMe campaign just hours after being ordered to pay first-term MP Moira Deeming $2.3million in legal costs.
In December, Federal Court Justice David O'Callaghan found Mr Pesutto had defamed Mrs Deeming by implying she was associated with neo-Nazis who gatecrashed a controversial Melbourne rally she attended.
He ordered Mr Pesutto pay her $315,000 on top of her legal costs for the case, which Ms Legge calculated to be $2,308,873,11.
Elizabeth Sceney and 'Friends of John Pesutto', have set up a GoFundMe, which hopes to raise funds to help the ousted Liberal leader pay the legal costs.
'As a result, he now faces significant legal fees and a costs order that he must, and wishes to, satisfy in order to avoid the possibility of bankruptcy.' it says.
'Our goal is simple. Let's give JP the chance to recover from this heavy setback and continue his invaluable work serving our great state and local community.'
The GoFundMe initially had a target of $3million, which has now been reduced to $70,000. As of publication on Friday afternoon it had raised around $18,000.
One of the names of the donors that appear on the site is Victorian Liberal Shadow Health Minister Georgie Crozier, a political ally of Pesutto, who gave $500.

In court, Mr Pesutto's barrister Daryl Williams KC sought a stay of 21 or 28 days on his client paying the lump sum to allow him to consider a review of the decision.
The ousted Opposition leader has reportedly been in discussions with the Cormack Foundation, a multimillion-dollar investment group for the Liberal Party, to cover his legal costs, as reported by the Herald Sun.
After losing the defamation trial, Mr Pesutto lost the leadership in a spill and Mrs Deeming was welcomed back to the party room.
His replacement Brad Battin indicated the party wasn't preparing for a by-election in Hawthorn and said it was up to the secretariat to decide whether to bail Mr Pesutto.
'We don't need a candidate at the moment,' Mr Battin told ABC Radio Melbourne.
'We've got John Pesutto, who is the member for Hawthorn, and if everything goes in a direction I would like to see John Pesutto will be there at the next state election.
'But we'll keep those conversations internally - people aren't interested in what's happening inside the Liberal Party.'
Mr Battin sparked backlash in April when he promoted Mrs Deeming as his 'representative to the western suburbs' amid her legal battle with Mr Pesutto.

Man who left his wife with a permanent disability then dumped her at hospital is sent to jail

A man who shot his wife while she lay in bed and then dumped her at hospital has been jailed for seven years. Kamal Eljamal, 35, fired several shots through the garage roof of his home in Condell Park in Sydney 's south-west in January 2023. One of the bullets went through the mattress of the bed where his 37-year-old wife, Georgina Vlahos, was laying at the time. The bullet fractured her spine and ribs, leaving her with a permanent spinal disability. After shooting his wife, Eljamal drove her to the hospital and told staff that he 'found her like this'. He then returned home to clean the house. Eljamal pleaded guilty to causing grievous actual bodily harm and using a pistol while not authorised to do so on February 5. Ms Vlahos had forgiven her husband, but the injuries remained extremely serious. 'She will never walk again,' District Court Judge Sean Grant said on Friday. 'A message needs to be sent to the community that if you possess and use a firearm (unlawfully), you will be sent to jail for a long time.' When police arrived to search the property the day after the incident, they found several bullet holes around the house. Eljamal's pistol was never found. 'It is disturbing that the firearm has not been recovered and remains in the community,' Judge Grant said. Eljamal had previously been convicted for supplying illicit drugs and had a longstanding substance abuse disorder, the court was told. Since his arrest in February 2023, Eljamal has completed two stints in full-time rehabilitation therapy and spent time in custody. Judge Grant took his efforts to rehabilitate into account, but was unable to conclude he would not be before a court again. He maintained Eljamal should not benefit from the injuries he inflicted by receiving a lesser sentence to care for his wife. As a result of her spinal impairment, Ms Vlahos requires assistance to complete daily tasks including showering and using the toilet. But there were other people who had been, and could continue, providing her assistance, the judge said. Eljamal was ordered to serve at least four years and three months in prison. With backdating for time already served, Eljamal will be eligible for parole in April 2028.

Pregnant teacher, 36, who had ‘sex with pupil, 15, after she groomed him' breaks down in tears in court

A PREGNANT teacher accused having sex with a 15-year-old pupil after grooming him has been granted bail. Karly Rae, 36, was arrested in October at her home in New South Wales, Australia on suspicion having intercourse with the boy, who attends her school. 3 3 Rae is a special needs teacher - but the schoolboy is not believed to have special needs. There is also no suggestion that the student is the father of her unborn child. Rae is alleged to have had sex with the pupil on October 4 last year, shortly before her arrest, according to court docs seen by The Daily Telegraph. Rae has pleaded not guilty to all charges against her - which also include possession of child abuse material and grooming a child for sex. During a bail hearing at the NSW Supreme Court on Friday, so the court heard Rae was initially granted bail, but later thrown behind bars for allegedly contacting the student. On January 14, she rang the alleged victim five times in two hours to persuade him to "give a false version of events", the court heard, which was said to breach a domestic violence order in place. Instead of agreeing, the teen told his mother what had happened and went to the police. Rae was then arrested and has been locked up for the past four months. However, the judge granted Rae bail on Friday under strict conditions, after hearing about her "high risk" pregnancy. Justice Dhanji said: "The applicant is 23 weeks pregnant, due to give birth in September." Evil mum jailed for SELLING daughter, 6, 'to healer who wanted eyes & skin' The expecting mother reportedly sobbed silently on the video link at the mention of her pregnancy. The judge noted her pregnancy was high risk owing to her gestational diabetes and history of miscarriages. But he also ruled that, due to the nature of the allegations against Rae, her child will be unable to stay with her in custody. Rae was slapped with at least 14 bail condition - including home detention, a ban on social media use, and a requirement to report to Toronto Police Station three times a week. The judge also said Rae is "no longer able to work as a teacher" and its "highly improbable" she will make attempts to have sex with a child. Earlier in the week, Rae pleaded not guilty to five charges via video link at Newcastle Magistrates Court. These included aggravated sexual intercourse with a child aged between 14 and 16, grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity and possession of child abuse material. Additional charges include acting to pervert the course of justice and breaching the violence order after allegedly contacting the student in January. Rae's case will go to trial in the District Court and will be arraigned in July.

Brazen squatters watch TV in retiree's home while he gives news interview

A family of brazen squatters were filmed sleeping and watching television in a retiree's home while a news crew interviewed him about his property being taken over. The squatters had been living in the house for a year, after one moved in via a property listing before inviting his family to join him while homeowner Adrian was away visiting his dying mother. A film crew from Australian news show A Current Affair admonished the 'audacity' of the group, who had installed curtains to create makeshift bedrooms and refused to leave even while cameras were rolling.
