Richard Jefferson feuding with Dave Portnoy, Bill Simmons after ESPN attacks

New York Post12-05-2025

ESPN broadcaster Richard Jefferson doesn't want to hear it from the Boston Celtics fanboys.
Jefferson, who is on the call for parts of the Knicks-Celtics series for ESPN, responded to famous Celtics fans Bill Simmons and Dave Portnoy, after the booth was criticized during Boston's Game 3 triumph.
'Richard Jefferson might as well throw on a Knicks uniform in the booth,' Portnoy said on X during the Celtics' 115-93 win.

Jefferson didn't take too kindly to the Portnoy callout, with the two having met in the past.
'Dave, my brother, we talked about this when we did your pizza review,' Jefferson said in response to Portnoy on X with laughing emojis. 'I don't care who wins I'm just telling the stories. Also, don't talk on Twitter like you don't know me.'

Portnoy has been poking fun at Knicks fans throughout the series against the Celtics, laughing at the team after Game 3 and swearing that New York has no chance despite it taking the first two games of the series in Boston.
Simmons was also frustrated with ESPN's coverage of the series, although was a little more subtle about it.
'I know ESPN didn't mention it for almost 2 hours – but that was a superb [Payton] Pritchard game. Played 18 huge mins in first half. They really needed him today,' Simmons said on X before Jefferson took it personally.

'1. Pritch Please,' said in response. '2. Let me fix your post, 'I'm a huge Boston supporter and I wish they spoke MORE about Pritchard' 3. I personally did a highlight package for Pritchard during the game. 4. So to say we didn't mention it for 2 hours is an actually lie or maybe a bias opinion. I'll let you pick.'
Pritchard, the Celtics' backup point guard and Sixth Man of the Year, finished the game with 23 points while knocking down 5 of 10 from beyond the arc.
Simmons notably has one of the biggest sports podcasts in the world and also produced a seven-part Celtics documentary for Max, 'Celtics City.'

It seems the NBA playoffs color analysts simply can't catch a break, as Jefferson joins Reggie Miller as another broadcaster getting roasted on social media during playoff games.
Miller was under fire by fans for bringing little to the broadcast and bizarre suggestions, like bringing in PJ Tucker.

Jefferson, who played in the NBA for 17 years, took over for now-Lakers coach JJ Redick as the lead play-by-play color analyst for ESPN.
Monday's Game 4 will again be aired on ESPN before switching back over to TNT for Game 5.

Charles Barkley Takes Shot At Knicks After Firing Tom Thibodeau

Charles Barkley Takes Shot At Knicks After Firing Tom Thibodeau originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After defeating the defending champion Boston Celtics in six games, Tom Thibodeau and the New York Knicks saw their season come to an end in the Eastern Conference finals, falling to the Indiana Pacers. Advertisement Thibodeau joined the Knicks in 2020 and has made it to the NBA playoffs in four of his five seasons there. However, despite the recent success, New York elected to part ways with Thibodeau following its elimination. The Knicks have looked into interviewing four current NBA head coaches, including the Dallas Mavericks' Jason Kidd, the Minnesota Timberwolves' Chris Finch, the Houston Rockets' Ime Udoka and the Atlanta Hawks' Quin Snyder. However, according to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Hawks became the fourth team to deny the Knicks an interview, leaving New York empty-handed to begin its coaching search. Outside of these four potential candidates, New York hasn't revealed much of a plan going forward without Thibodeau. And NBA legend Charles Barkley does not approve. NBA analyst Charles Barkley criticized the New York Jairaj-Imagn Images On Wednesday, Barkley joined ESPN for its pregame coverage of Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The former Phoenix Suns forward was not pleased with New York's coaching decision, calling them out live on air. Advertisement "The Knicks gotta be the stupidest damn people in the world," Barkley said. "Like, you don't fire a good coach like that and don't have a plan. I mean, Thibs did a hell of a job. Obviously, something's going on there, but you don't have a plan, and now, the three coaches turn you down. You gotta have a plan, man. And they don't have a plan. Now... I mean, I don't know what the hell they are going to do." Although Thibodeau hasn't won an NBA championship as a head coach, he has still put together an impressive coaching resume. He won two NBA Coach of the Year awards and even led the Knicks to their first conference finals in 25 years. ESPN NBA booth facing another potential shakeup with Doris Burke's spot in limbo

The 2025 NBA Finals could be the first and last for ESPN's current top broadcasting trio. The future of the booth featuring longtime play-by-play voice Mike Breen and analysts Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson is up in the air, as Burke's spot 'is not guaranteed for next season' and Jefferson is on an expiring contract, The Athletic's Andrew Marchand reported Wednesday. Advertisement Jefferson has drawn interest from Amazon, the report said, ahead of its first season airing NBA games starting in the fall, though ESPN 'intends' on bringing the former Nets star back. NBAE via Getty Images One factor ESPN will weigh is whether Burke would be better suited as part of a two-person or three-person broadcast crew, according to The Athletic. Burke rose to ESPN's No. 1 NBA team after the network dumped Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy following the 2023 NBA Finals. NBAE via Getty Images Doc Rivers, who had been fired by the 76ers, originally joined Burke and Breen, but he then left to become the Bucks' head coach in January 2024. Advertisement JJ Redick replaced Rivers, but his tenure was also short-lived as he took the Lakers' head coaching job last June. TNT just completed its final season broadcasting NBA games in the U.S., though the acclaimed 'Inside the NBA' will air on ESPN beginning next season through a licensing deal. Amazon has reached deals with Ian Eagle and Kevin Harlan to be its top play-by-players next season, while game analysts will include Stan Van Gundy, Dwyane Wade and Steve Nash. NBC will have Mike Tirico and Noah Eagle calling games, with Reggie Miller and Jamal Crawford joining them as game analysts. Michael Jordan has also joined NBC as a special contributor.
