Heartwarming sight at Gracie Abrams' Melbourne concert
A sea of girls wearing bows in their hair, with tears of joy and screams so loud their voices crack.
It is a clear sign Gracie Abrams has arrived in Melbourne.
The American singer-songwriter is halfway through her sellout The Secret of Us Tour in Australia, performing her first of three shows at Rod Laver Arena on Friday night.
A look around the venue dishes up a heartwarming sight.
No matter if you're young or old, the unofficial uniform for fans attending an Abrams concert is a bow. And these fans — many of whom would have exchanged friendship bracelets at Taylor Swift's concerts last year — know how to rally behind a theme.
Abrams herself may have been one of the only people in the arena of more than 12,000 people not wearing a bow.
While the star now rocks a signature bob, the tradition is a nod to the days when she used to wear a bow in her long hair while performing.
Abrams, the daughter of famous American filmmaker JJ Abrams, released her second studio album The Secret of Us in June last year.
It includes the song us with Swift, which the friends wrote during The Eras Tour in 2023.
Abrams opened for Swift's North American shows in 2023 and 2024. The year earlier, Abrams had opened for Olivia Rodrigo's Sour Tour.
Adding to her high-profile collaborations, Abrams is on celeb couple Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's new song Call Me When You Breakup, which was released in February this year.
It is no wonder Abrams has such a dedicated fanbase.
Among her incredible live vocals, she takes fans' phones and cameras to snap selfies with them from the stage, she accepts and shows off handmade gifts, and mouths 'I love you' and 'thank you' between lines.
One of two surprise songs — Right Now from her 2023 album Good Riddance — on Friday was dedicated to a father-daughter duo in the crowd. Abrams explained the teen, Scarlett, had written her a heartfelt letter and passed it on to her drummer, Gabe Smith, outside the venue, along with a rose gold guitar pick made by Scarlett's dad.
While Abrams appears to have taken the intimate surprise song portion of the night from the Swift playbook, unlike the highest-grossing touring artist, Abrams has no backup dancers, costume changes or fireworks. She performs song after song with no break and moves her body to the feel of the music.
Abrams finished off a stellar performance with her hits That's So True (which topped Australian charts) and Close to You.
Abrams wasn't the only one with surprises on Friday. Her opener, American singer-songwriter Ashe, gave Melbourne a preview of a never-before-heard song. The song is a collaboration and she teased the other artist may perform his parts of the unreleased track somewhere else in the world.
It was hinted that that unnamed person is Noah Kahan, as Ashe briefly sang some of his hit Stick Season. The 32-year-old is not new to big collabs. She released Till Forever Falls Apart with FINNEAS in 2021 and Moral of the Story with Niall Horan in 2020.
Abrams has soared in popularity over the last couple years, but this is not her first time touring Australia.
The 25-year-old toured her debut studio album Good Riddance to sellout crowds at Melbourne's Forum, Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, and Brisbane's Fortitude Music Hall in January last year.
This time around, she has doubled the number of shows and is taking on arenas across the country — selling more than 150,000 tickets.
Abrams has already performed six shows in Auckland (with her actor boyfriend, Normal People and Gladiator II star Paul Mescal in attendance), Sydney and Brisbane.
Her third and final Melbourne show will be on Sunday, before heading to Adelaide and Perth to finish the 12-show Australian and New Zealand leg of the The Secret of Us Tour.

Why an Esky full of ham and orange pizza travelled 1700km across Australia
A viral ham and orange pizza has flown almost 1700km to feed a group of fans who missed out on trying it. Brisbane local Jaz and his friends Laura, Sam and Haylee like to frequent their city's trivia competitions and participate in 'random events' every couple of weeks. But on May 20, the four took out the trophy for the most random thing they've done yet – hop on a spontaneous flight to Melbourne to try a unique combination of ham and orange on pizza. The dish by Bubba Pizza, a remake of the classic Hawaiian topper, popped up on Sam's social media feed a few months ago with the group agreeing it 'would be fun' to try. Sam and Haylee, keen from the get go, convinced the other two to join them down south. 'The pizza seems like a 'meme' (interesting) and we kind of have to try it,' Jaz told NewsWire. 'We spent about a month planning this trip, and setting up an itinerary to go down for a week.' The day before they left Melbourne, the group decided it was time and checked the website of various Bubba Pizza franchises to see if the ham and orange pizza was available, putting in an online order at the Richmond store. 'It turns out the order didn't go through,' Jaz said. 'We asked to order an orange pizza but the (worker) says 'no, we're out of oranges'.' Jaz said he and his friends offered to go around the corner to the nearby supermarket to buy some more oranges for a pizza to be made, but was told by staff that the store was going to close soon anyway. They asked if the store could stay open a 'little longer', but, to their disappointment, their request was denied. 'We decided to get two other pizzas … a vegetarian and a meat lovers,' Jaz said. 'We (went) back to the apartment a little bit dejected, and on the way back we were talking about a way we can get the pizza quickly tomorrow before our 1.40pm flight … and if we can get someone to Uber it up. 'If you know Melbourne, it's like 40 minutes from the airport to the CBD – there was no way that was happening.' In an crazy turn of events, upon returning home to the Sunshine State, a friend of a friend happened to know a worker at Bubba Pizza and offered to connect them. Managing Director Damian Hopper said it was the pizza that just 'won't go away'. 'This is the second time we tried to take it off the menu and something weird has happened,' he said. 'It's a pizza that really surprises people. When they hear about it, some people get angry, other people get really intrigued but when they try it, every single time, they go 'that they actually works'. 'We're doing a menu update for winter … we were planning on taking off. Then we get this text message from someone telling the story of these four friends from Brisbane who flew all the way down to try it, it was sold out and couldn't get it. 'First reaction was like 'I feel terrible.' I feel terrible when regular customers drive 15 minutes down to get a pizza and they can't get one, because I'd be upset myself, you know? 'The other reaction was 'that can't be possible'. Who would bother doing that?' In a show of phenomenal customer service, Bubba Pizza decided to take the food to them. Damian said: 'I was just like, 'what are we gonna (sic) do?' Like these guys gone through a huge amount of effort for us and we've gotta try and do something for them. 'So I thought I'd send the missus.' An Esky full of vacuum-sealed, half-cooked ham and orange pizzas, kept cool by ice packs, boarded a Jetstar flight from Melbourne to be personally delivered to the friends by pizza 'delivery flyer' Lucy Saarelaht. Lucy escorted the ingredients to a local pizzeria to whip up five of the creations before taking it to the friends to try in a Brisbane park on Wednesday afternoon. When asked if interstate delivery was going to become a regular offering, Damian joked they could now serve the entire planet. 'I was thinking technically that thing would last in an Esky or maybe some sort of fridge for probably three or four day,' he said. 'That means our delivery territory now is worldwide. 'If someone wants us to deliver it to New York, I would absolutely get on plane and take it over.' His next masterpiece is in line with the chain's 25th anniversary in the form of a 2000s themed pizza. Damian added he would love to create the next big thing that would 'slip in' alongside the classics. Jaz said the pizza was 'amazing' and that the group was appreciative for Bubba Pizza's efforts. 'It was really good to try and close out the adventure,' he said. 'You gotta try everything once right?' Jaz said he would visit Melbourne again, but this time actually eat the pizza in-store. 'It all started with a Facebook ad and it's a great story,' he added. 'You'll get a weird look when you tell the story but it's kind of awesome.'

Before her big Pride gig, Ora caught up on her squad of famous Aussie collaborators, from the sizzling (northern hemisphere) summer anthem's co-writer Troye Sivan to tour buddy Kylie Minogue. The Heat video is rather steamy. You shot it on Miami beach? 'It was shot while I was on the Kylie tour in April and we had about four hours in that day to shoot it because we were seriously back-to-back with the shows. You have very strong creative connections with Australia, particularly since you did the Voice (2021-2023). How did you and Troye Sivan and his songwriting partner Leland all get together to write Heat? 'Leland, I've known for a long time, we have a lot of mutual friends. And I've constantly had their support. When we were writing together, they suggested this concept of the sexuality and the intensity of heat. And that's what I love about Troye - he's so good at writing really sexy, cheeky songs. Rush was one of my favorite songs of last year and working with him has been on a bucket list. He just happens to be another Australian that wanted to work with me. It was just amazing, and the song fit exactly what my mood of the album was.' 'My last record was all about finding love and feeling super inspired by my relationship (with film-maker husband Taika Waititi). Whereas this one is just really inspired by having fun and being a sexy bitch. And summer is such a big part of my life, since I was a kid going around to the Eastern European beaches and seeing how they operate with plastic bags on their heads, very different to a Hawaii beach. 'It was everything to me. Kylie has been such an incredible inspiration to me for my whole life. And also having her as a supporter, I couldn't ask for anything more. I haven't toured like that for about three years and opening up for her was the best way to just get back into live shows. Her audience are just so accepting and they really showed up for me. I just never wanted it to end ... I'm just so grateful for that tour.' Lostboy, who co-wrote Kylie's smash Padam Padam, has said you were going to cut the song at one stage. Any regrets about him not leaving the song with you? 'I've always grown up with this saying, 'What's for you won't pass you.' And that's always how I've lived my life. And it's Kylie Minogue - she's the queen of the world, in my opinion. So, of course, Kylie's going to get it and kill it and do a great job. And in the pop industry, that happens every day to a lot of big artists, you don't just know about it. Lostboy lives in my studio here in Los Angeles, we're very close friends.' Is there a Whatsapp group for The Voice Australia coaches? Keith Urban featured on the track Shape of Me from your last album You & I and you are touring Australia with Ricky Martin in November. 'During that show, I made an incredible friendship with Keith and I love him to death. He's a big, big part of my music-making process, I ask for his advice. And I can't wait to do this Ricky tour. It's another reason to come to Australia. I mean, as soon as they asked me, I just said yes because it's in Australia and it's Ricky.'
