Death toll from 'concerning' disease outbreak grows, Jetstar to pull all flights from US, Uber trials new feature in Australia

Yahoo15-05-2025

Hello and welcome to Yahoo's live news blog this Thursday. Jetstar will stop flying to the US in just months after 19 years. It comes amid concern from tourists considering trips to the US.
The death toll from Queensland's melioidosis outbreak has reached 31 after the death of a Townsville resident. Health authorities say the spike in cases and deaths is "concerning".
Sydney will be the first city globally where Uber trials a new feature that will see customers offered restaurant discounts if they dine in. The trial will look to rival the app Eat Club.
Follow along as we bring you regular updates throughout the day.
A decision to put 17-year-old sprint sensation Gout Gout into an Under-23 event has been labelled as "just soft" by US sprinter Noah Williams.
He claims the best talent, regardless of age, is always put into the open category in the US. There is a general belief the Australian team are taking a cautious approach with Gout Gout to ensure he is eased into the global spotlight.
So what do you think? Should Gout Gout limit his races against the world's best or should he just go for it?
Have your say below.
Jetstar will stop flying to the US in just months as demand for flights to the country slowed.
The budget airline has flown to Hawaii for 19 years but from October that will stop, allowing Jetstar to focus on other international routes.
It comes as concerns grow about travel to the US, with reports of border crackdowns on overseas arrivals following Donald Trump's election win.
Uber is launching a new dine-in feature, with Sydney chosen ahead of other international cities for its trial location.
Dine Out will allow restaurants to offer discounts to customers for certain times of the day, such as quiet periods when they have fewer bookings.
The feature will compete with Eat Club which is already based around the idea, but Uber will have the added option of booking a vehicle to take users to the restaurant.
'Winter is always going to be quieter but maybe this year with Uber's Dine Out technology it will be different,' said Catalina Rose Bay Owner Judy McMahon, who has joined up to be part of the new feature.
Australia's Restaurant and Catering Association said the move was "very welcomed" and would hopefully bring much-needed revenue to venues.
Authorities in Queensland remain concerned over a deadly outbreak of soil-borne disease melioidosis, with the death toll rising to 31.
Townsville Public Health Unit director Steven Donohue said it was likely deaths would continue when case levels were this high, with more than 200 this year alone.
"As you can imagine, this is concerning," Dr Donohue said, the ABC reported.
"It is a pretty nasty disease, particularly when it happens to the sick and elderly."
The outbreak has been linked to the extreme wet weather Queensland has faced, with health authorities seeing cases slowly drop with drier weather, and they now hope that trend will continue.
Residents are again being reminded to wear face masks while cleaning up muddy areas to avoid contact with the bacteria.

Bizarre things Aussies leave in Ubers

An Esky full of seafood, a Steve Irwin action figure and $1200 worth of meat raffle winnings are just some of the unique items left behind in Ubers this year. The rideshare company have just released its annual Lost & Found Index, and some distinctive lost property gives a glimpse into the habits of Australian travellers. On the list of the 'most unique' lost items were $500 worth of live exotic fish, a vibrator, a cooked chicken, a puppy, half a pair of dentures, and what Uber deemed a 'suspicious' amount of belts. Other highlights on the list were a sword, Lamborghini keys, and an electric doughnut maker. The most commonly forgotten items, however, were everyday possessions, including clothing, luggage, phones, jewellery, headphones, wallets and keys. Uber Australia and New Zealand's director of consumer operations Mathieu Maire said the index showed 'a quintessentially Aussie' insight into how we travel. 'People misplace things for all sorts of reasons – maybe they're in a rush, juggling too much or just a bit distracted,' Mr Maire said. 'Behind every lost item, there's often a little story. 'Whether it's your love letter or your lightsaber, we know how important it is to be reunited with your belongings.' Australian forgetfulness habits change depending on the day of the week, according to the index. On Mondays, hats are commonly forgotten, jackets are lost on Tuesday and Fridays, iPads on Wednesdays and AirPods on Thursdays. Phones are most likely to go missing on the weekend. The time of day also seems to make an impact; Australians are most forgetful during the morning rush hour and when coming home from a night out at 2am. Sydney topped the list as Australia's most 'forgetful' city, followed closely by Melbourne at No.2. Next on the list were Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, the Gold Coast and Canberra. Uber has encouraged anyone who lost something in a rideshare to reach out by contacting their driver directly. 'Our built-in tools make it easy to reconnect with your driver and retrieve your belongings with as little hassle as possible,' Mr Maire said. 30 most unique lost items: Mini Steve Irwin toy $500 worth of live exotic fish Vibrator A cooked chicken Esky with crabs and fish Puppy Portable CPAP machine Bottom denture $1200 meat raffle prize Cat scratching post Massage table Sword Breathalyser Electric doughnut maker Kung fu belt Rugby ball shaped cufflinks Love letter Lightsaber Breast pump executor Hair extensions Jar of bee pollen Police documents Crochet peas Clown nose Green gremlin toy $400 worth of concert merch Bass guitar Christmas lights box with $1,500 cash inside Teeth grills Suspicious amount of belts 10 most commonly forgotten items: Clothing Backpacks/luggage Phones Jewellery Headphones Wallets/purses Keys Laptops Vapes Glasses 15 most 'forgetful' cities: Sydney, NSW Melbourne, VIC Perth, WA Brisbane, QLD Adelaide, SA Gold Coast, QLD Canberra, ACT Newcastle, NSW Hobart, TAS Cairns, QLD Darwin, NT Sunshine Coast, QLD Geelong, VIC Wollongong, NSW Ballarat, VIC

You Can Order Helicopters and Boats on Uber at This Iconic Italian Destination

Traveling up and down Italy's gorgeous Amalfi Coast is about to get a little more streamlined this summer. Uber announced that it is launching Uber Copter and Uber Boat in Sorrento, Italy, allowing visitors to use the app to travel by air, sea, or land throughout Southern Italy this summer. Starting June 25, reservations for the new services will be available to book through the Uber app within Italy. Uber will also expand its ground transportation options by launching Uber Reserve on the Amalfi Coast, which gives riders the ability to book rides in advance and beat the busy crowds at Salerno Airport. Uber Copter and Uber Boat will be limited to availability on summer weekends. Departing from an exclusive helipad in Sorrento, Uber Copter gives travelers the option to pre-book private, round-trip journeys to Capri by helicopter. The service allows groups of up to six people to travel in a dual-pilot helicopter for €250 (about $290) per person and includes door-to-door transportation to and from the helicopter. For travelers eager to head out to sea on the Amalfi Coast, Uber Boat allows users to book a private four-hour charter cruise for up to 12 people, including a personal skipper, snacks, and beverages. The boat will set sail from Sorrento Marina. 'At Uber, we strive to help our customers go anywhere, wherever they are travelling." Anabel Diaz, Uber's vice president of Europe, Middle East, and Africa mobility, said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure . "Italy is fast becoming one of our most popular tourist destinations, with travelers turning to the Uber app to help make their holiday travel stress-free. This summer, we're adding a series of unforgettable experiences that will make travelling by land, sea or air more magical than ever before.' Passengers on the Uber Boat off the Amalfi Coast. According to Uber, more than 400,000 people used Uber in Italy last summer, and 60,000 people opened the app in the Amalfi Coast in just the last 12 months. Both Uber Copter and Uber Boat must be booked at least 48 hours in advance through Uber Reserve, and the seasonal offerings will run every Saturday and Sunday from July 26 to Aug. 24. The availability of the services will be subject to weather conditions. The Amalfi Coast is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and has become more and more popular as a summer destination over the years, but despite the crowds, it is still an enjoyable and stunning place to visit in Italy.
