AIADMK MLA Jayaraman, son file Rs 1 crore defamation suit against YouTube channels
Chennai: AIADMK MLA and former Deputy Speaker Pollachi V. Jayaraman, along with his son Pravin Jayaraman, has filed a Rs 1 crore civil defamation suit in the Madras High Court against eight YouTube channels and three of their guest speakers.
The suit alleges that the defendants made defamatory remarks linking the duo to the Pollachi serial sexual assault case, which led to public outrage and a high-profile trial.
The matter came up for hearing before Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy on Thursday.
However, the hearing was adjourned by a week at the request of a junior counsel representing the plaintiffs.
The court also recorded the appearance of advocate P.T. Perumal, who submitted that he would represent Nakheeran Gopal, editor of Nakheeran magazine and the first defendant in the suit.
In their plea, the plaintiffs have not only sought monetary damages but have also requested a permanent injunction restraining the defendants from making any future imputations - either directly or by suggestion - linking them to the sexual assault case. They have also demanded that the defendants bear the cost of litigation.
Two interim applications were also filed along with the main suit. The first seeks a temporary injunction against the publication of any content connecting the father and son to the case. The second requests the court to take down existing videos that allegedly carry defamatory content.
The videos in question were published between May 13 and May 15, 2025, and include content from YouTube channels such as Nakheeran TV, AranSei, Jeeva Today, Jambavan TV, Galatta Voice, The Debate, Tamil Nadu Now, and IBC Tamil.
The case has gained renewed public attention after a Mahila Court in Coimbatore delivered its verdict on May 13, sentencing nine individuals to life imprisonment for their roles in the serial sexual assault case that first emerged in 2019.
The High Court is expected to resume the hearing next week, as the legal battle unfolds over allegations that the plaintiffs' claim have tarnished their public image and caused emotional and reputational harm.

Contribute now New Delhi: A minor who was raped had to wait in an ambulance for hours before being admitted to the Patna Medical College and Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, her family has said. Multiple reports note that the minor, who was 11 years old, belonged to a Dalit community. The accused is a 30-year-old Rohit Kumar Sahni, who was arrested. Sahni raped the child on May 26. Times of India reported that he stabbed her multiple times in the neck, chest and abdomen, and slit her throat. She was initially admitted to the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital in Muzaffarpur, but on May 31, when her condition deteriorated, doctors there referred her the Patna hospital (PMCH). Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan told reporters in Delhi that the Muzaffarpur hospital's initial recommendation had been that the minor be transported to AIIMS Patna, but claimed that that did not materialise due to administrative apathy. The girl's uncle was quoted as having said that the emergency department staff at PMCH told the family that there was no space and directed them to other wards. 'We were sent to the paediatric department after being turned away from two-three wards. She was in the ambulance for hours. It was after some politicians intervened that she was finally admitted at around 5 pm on Saturday, and passed away this morning,' Indian Express quoted him as having said. Reports have it that the time which the minor spent in the ambulance was around four to five hours. Congress workers, including its Bihar president Rajesh Ram, went to the hospital while the minor was made to wait. Another report carried another allegation by the uncle – that was asked to pay Rs 2,000 for an oxygen cylinder when the supply ran low during transit. 'Blood was coming out of her nose and mouth on Sunday morning, but no doctor came to see her,' he said, according to TOI. The PMCH administration has denied negligence and claimed that the child was taken to the ENT department and then transferred to the gynaecology department. Congress's Rahul Gandhi, who is leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, wrote on X, 'The brutality against a minor Dalit girl in Muzaffarpur and the subsequent negligence in her treatment is extremely shameful. If she had received timely treatment, her life could have been saved. But the double-engine government was negligent not only in providing security but also in saving her life. We will not sit quietly until the victim's family gets justice. Strict action should be taken against the culprits and negligent officers.' Man convicted in Anna University sexual assault case sentenced to life imprisonment
A Chennai court on Monday sentenced the man convicted of sexually assaulting a student on the campus of Anna University to life imprisonment for a minimum period of 30 years without remission, Live Law reported. The man, Gnanasekaran, has also been directed to pay a fine of Rs 90,000. On May 28, he was found guilty on all 11 charges filed against him and convicted under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to rape and sexual harassment, in addition to sections of the Information Technology Act and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act. Gnanasekaran is accused of having filmed the student and her partner on the university campus and threatening to leak the footage to the dean and the couple's parents if they did not comply with his demands. The incident occurred on December 23, when Gnanasekaran allegedly took the complainant to a remote location where he first blackmailed her before sexually assaulting her. The first information report filed in the case stated that he had illegally detained the student for 40 minutes. Gnanasekaran, who ran a roadside eatery near the campus, was arrested by the Greater Chennai Police two days after the assault. The police had said that at least seven other cases were pending against him. The case had sparked a controversy after the FIR based on the complaint was leaked online, revealing the identity of the student. Stating that this had caused the student 'trauma and humiliation', the Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu government on December 28 to provide Rs 25 lakh in compensation to her. The bench also called it a serious failure on the part of the police. In addition, the High Court had constituted an all-woman Special Investigation Team to probe the case. The High Court had also expressed shock over the language used in the FIR, stating that it amounted to victim-shaming, and directed the Tamil Nadu Police to conduct a departmental inquiry into the leak. However, the Supreme Court in January stayed the High Court order on the inquiry. Advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Luthra, representing the Tamil Nadu government, had attributed the leak to a technical glitch.
