Deputies break up large party of unsupervised teens at Harrisburg Park
The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office had to shut down a party at Harrisburg Park after it got out of control Friday.
A video posted to Charlitt captured deputies responding to a wild party with over 200 juveniles in the area.
Deputies said they were unsupervised, engaging in disorderly conduct, and firing splatterball guns at officers.
Cristian Gonzalez told Channel 9 that he had just left the park right before the incident unfolded.
'I wasn't here for that. 'I'm glad I didn't see that, because I don't like my daughter seeing stuff that's not appropriate,' said Gonzalez.

Deputies said it all started at a pool house on Sunburst Lane for a birthday party published on social media.
Once at the scene, officers asked the juveniles to leave the area, since it was HOA-regulated and the pool was not open.
'I'm surprised that the kids have taken it upon themselves to host a whole party, and especially the pool is just a safety risk, too,' said resident Evelyn Johnson.
Johnson said she lives behind the pool house. She's glad the group complied with the officers and shut the party down, but was upset that the chaos even unfolded.
'I know it seems innocent to them, but it's really not. It's just putting your life in danger at the end of the day,' said Johnson.
She said she wants kids to be more mindful of their choices.
'I just want our kids to make better choices. We can still have fun. It's just how we go about it,' said Johnson.
The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office said no one was arrested. However, deputies said the actions of the juveniles will not be tolerated in the county.

Gary man gets 70 years for killing marijuana dealer
A Gary man got 70 years Friday for killing a marijuana dealer. Tyrone Reno, 34, was convicted last month of murder in the Nov. 15, 2021, death of Quintez Johnson, 31, plus a gun enhancement. He faced up to 85 years. Johnson's two kids, aged 8 and 6, were in the apartment when he was shot. At trial, jurors viewed footage of an unmasked man running down a stairwell just after Johnson's death. They returned a guilty verdict after 15 minutes. Reno has said he is innocent and plans to appeal, his lawyer Natalie Williams said in court Friday, asking for a 45-year sentence. During lengthy remarks, Deputy Prosecutor Milana Petersen said Reno killed Johnson over cash and a 'little bit of weed.' She ultimately asked for 75 years. Johnson's mother, emotional on the stand, said her grandson still wouldn't eat spaghetti because it was the last dinner he ate with his dad. She expressed empathy for Reno's family. My son would have helped you, she told Reno. 'I just want to know why,' she said. 'He would have done anything you asked.' Earlier in the hearing, Petersen questioned Detective James Nielsen on videos from Reno's Facebook account. They showed him holding guns, money with rap music playing, or smoking. Williams objected throughout – saying they were posted in 2022 or later. His Facebook account was deactivated around the time of Johnson's death, she said. The lawyer argued there was no proof he was in a gang, a point Judge Salvador Vasquez agreed. Posting videos on Facebook with guns, money or rap music was not proof he lived a violent life. It was a false conjecture, she argued. Gary Police responded that day to an apartment building on the 1300 block of W. 5th Avenue for a homicide. Detectives found a trail of marijuana up the stairs to an open Pringles inside a third-floor apartment. Johnson was lying on the sofa. He had been shot twice in the head. There were no signs of struggle. Security cameras showed a Black man — later identified as Reno — arriving at Johnson's apartment, then fleeing about three minutes later. He had a handgun and a backpack with marijuana. Police believe Johnson was shot around 2 p.m. While a patrolman was writing a report at the Gary Police Station, 555 Polk St., a man who matched the one seen on the video walked by him and a colleague. He was wearing the same clothes, including a Black hoodie with white lining and brown tag. The other officer approached him. Reno gave his name, but he wasn't arrested, since the man in the video wasn't identified yet. Police learned Johnson started selling marijuana a month earlier to help pay his bills. Reno was arrested two years later. Investigators used 'facial recognition software' to help match security footage outside the Gary Police station to the man seen on camera at Johnson's apartment, court filings show. That left some questions on the software's accuracy. State lawmakers recently passed legislation to tighten standards for witness identification on photo lineups. It requires police to tell witnesses a suspect might not be in the lineup, cutting pressure to pick a photo; 'filler' photos – the non-suspects — have to look as close to a suspect as possible, and a witness' 'confidence' will have to be recorded. It also requires police to corroborate an identification by facial recognition software with other evidence. The law goes into effect July 1. mcolias@

Central Florida law enforcement gears up for national protests
Law enforcement authorities are making arrangements for a day of nationwide protests that is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th. More than a dozen demonstrations are planned across major Central Florida cities, with at least one organized protest planned in Volusia, Seminole, Orange, Lake, Osceola and Brevard counties. According to organizers, a protest scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. outside Orlando City Hall is expected to draw more than 1,000 people. According to Channel 9, organizers have also reported that over 2,000 people have RSVPed for protests at the US 1 and SR 520 intersection in Cocoa, with more than 500 people expected to attend another demonstration at Florida 44 and Mission Drive in New Smyrna Beach. According to the organizers, they're planning to demonstrate on Flag Day, coincidentally also President Trump's birthday. Organizers say they're coming together to protest the president's plans for a military parade in Washington, D.C., and to show opposition to growing authoritarianism under the Trump Administration. Organizers call the event 'No Kings Day,' and they write on their website, 'A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation.' Amid unrest in California, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier emphasized that Florida law clearly prohibits rioting and includes enhanced penalties for those who break that law. Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey also issued a stern warning to Floridians during a press conference in Titusville on Thursday. 'If you throw a brick, a firebomb, or point a gun at one of our deputies, we will be notifying your family where to collect your remains, because we will kill you graveyard dead,' Ivey said. On Friday, Channel 9 heard from Law Enforcement in Seminole, Osceola, Volusia and Orange Counties, who said they were aware of protests and were making necessary preparations. Most departments declined to provide specifics for security reasons. A spokesperson for the Orlando Police Department said, 'The Orlando Police Department is aware of the protest taking place downtown tomorrow and has made all necessary preparations. While OPD does not discuss specific security measures, we always assess the needs of large-scale events to make sure enough staff are on hand to protect and serve our community.' Local woman loses loved ones in devastating fire, advocates for fire safety
Fire can reach a flashpoint in moments, which is why the Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives recommends planning your escape now. Channel 9 attended the Bureau's Safe Kids Day at Andretti Thrill Park in Melbourne this week, joined by Layza Warren. Her sister, Betty Mendre, her niece, Zayla and her nephew, Emmanuel, all lost their lives in a condo fire in Palm Bay. Sadly, only their older brother survived the January tragedy. Warren told us, ' Educate yourselves and be prepared so that if it does ever happen, you're able to survive it.' Investigators have ruled that the fire that took Mendre's life was accidental, likely caused by an electrical issue. Warren's sister was a local business owner. 'She was an insurance broker who was passionate about teaching her clients and the community about Medicaid or Medicare. She did whatever she could to make sure her clients were taken care of. And the outreach in this community, she impacted a lot of lives, educating them. Regarding insurance,' said Warren. Warren hopes her sister's story will continue to inspire others by encouraging them to ensure that even the youngest members of their families know where to find all the windows and doors in their homes, that they open easily, have working smoke detectors and that a safe place is designated to meet a distance away from their homes.
