The Guardian is the latest news organization to partner with OpenAI

Yahoo14-02-2025

The Guardian Media Group, owner of The Guardian and The Observer newspapers, is partnering with OpenAI. The deal will see reporting from The Guardian appear as a news source within ChatGPT, alongside article extracts and short summaries. In return, OpenAI will provide the Guardian Media Group with access to ChatGPT Enterprise, which the company says it will use to develop new products, features and tools.
"This new partnership with OpenAI reflects the intellectual property rights and value associated with our award-winning journalism, expanding our reach and impact to new audiences and innovative platform services," said Keith Underwood, chief financial and operating officer of the Guardian Media Group.
The Guardian Media Group joins a growing list of news publishers that are now working with OpenAI after an initial period of uncertainty over the company and its business model. What started as a trickle with The Associated Press in 2023 has since become a flood, with many of the English-speaking world's leading publishers inking deals with the AI startup.
In some ways, The Guardian has been more proactive than others. In 2023, the newspaper publish an article detailing its approach to generative AI. A year later, it announced a partnership with ProRata, a company that built a platform that allows AI platforms to attribute search results and share revenue with content owners. Today's announcement also comes after a major coalition of publishers, including The Guardian, announced a lawsuit against Cohere, a Canadian startup they allege improperly used more than 4,000 copyrighted works to train its AI models.

Chip designer Alphawave sees stock soar on Qualcomm takeover agreement

Shares in chip designer Alphawave rose sharply on Monday after the British-Canadian firm agreed to be acquired by US rival Qualcomm for around $2.4bn (€2.1bn) in cash. As of around 9.45am London time, Alphawave's stock had risen around 23% in daily trading on the LSE. Qualcomm's offer values each share at 183p, a 96% premium on the closing price seen on 31 March, the final day before Qualcomm and Alphawave announced they were holding discussions. The $2.4bn valuation is still half of the total worth attributed to Alphawave when it launched an IPO in 2021. At its stock market debut, Alphawave shares were worth 410p each and the group was valued at £3.1bn (€2.7bn), although the firm has generally traded well below this level since its IPO. The deal is expected to close in the first three months of 2026, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval. Related London Stock Exchange urged to do more to hold onto retail traders Why the US is banning Qualcomm and Intel from exporting some chips to China Alphawave designs semiconductor technology for data centres and AI applications, thus providing Qualcomm with an opportunity to diversify away from smartphone components. 'Qualcomm's acquisition of Alphawave Semi represents a significant milestone for us and an opportunity for our business to join forces with a respected industry leader and drive value to our customers,' said Tony Pialis, CEO of Alphawave Semi. 'By combining our resources and expertise, we will be well-positioned to expand our product offerings, reach a broader customer base, and enhance our technological capabilities,' he added. Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, commented on the deal: 'The combined teams share the goal of building advanced technology solutions and enabling next-level connected computing performance across a wide array of high growth areas, including data center infrastructure.' Alphawave said its directors would unanimously advise shareholders to vote in favour of the takeover. For the deal to go ahead, it would require a green light from investors representing 75% of shares. The takeover raises concerns about the attractiveness of listing in the UK, particularly after other high-profile departures from the LSE. Food-delivery service Deliveroo and cybersecurity and AI firm Darktrace have both agreed to be acquired by US firms. The fintech Wise also announced last week that it would be moving its primary listing to the US.

Microsoft-Backed OpenAI (MSFT) Has Reached $10B in Annual Recurring Revenue

Microsoft-backed AI company OpenAI has reached $10 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) less than three years after launching its popular ChatGPT chatbot. This total includes sales from its consumer products, ChatGPT business services, and its API, but does not include licensing revenue from Microsoft (MSFT) or large one-time deals, according to an OpenAI spokesperson. Interestingly, this amount jumped from about $5.5 billion in ARR last year. However, its rapid growth has come at a cost, as OpenAI lost around $5 billion last year to support its expansion. Confident Investing Starts Here: Nevertheless, OpenAI is aiming for even bigger targets. Indeed, the company is reportedly looking to reach $125 billion in revenue by 2029, according to a person familiar with the plans, which was first reported by The Information. In addition, earlier this year, OpenAI closed a $40 billion funding round that turned out to be the largest private tech deal on record and valued the company at $300 billion. As a result, based on today's revenue, OpenAI is currently valued at about 30 times sales. This highlights the huge expectations that investors have of the company. It is worth noting that OpenAI first launched ChatGPT for consumers in late 2022 and added business products the following year, with adoption growing quickly. By late March, the firm said that it had 500 million weekly active users. Moreover, earlier this month, OpenAI reported that it now has 3 million paying business users, which was an increase from 2 million in February. These strong user numbers are helping drive OpenAI's fast revenue growth as it continues to expand its AI products for both consumers and businesses. Is MSFT Stock a Buy? Although you cannot directly invest in OpenAI, you can buy shares of Microsoft, which has a 49% stake in OpenAI. And according to analysts, Microsoft stock has a Strong Buy consensus rating among 36 Wall Street analysts. That rating is based on 31 Buys and five Holds assigned in the last three months. Furthermore, the average MSFT price target of $514.93 implies 9% upside potential.
