In the current crypto landscape, with memecoins taking over the narrative and platforms pushing for blockchain-based disposable content, the whole space is morphing into a kind of crypto-Instagram. It's very easy to forget how NFTs originated and what role they still play in the art world. The first known NFT was created by artist Kevin McCoy in 2014 during a conference at the New Museum, setting a precedent by explicitly linking a non-fungible, tradable blockchain marker to a work of art via onchain metadata. In this way, NFTs were cemented into the history of art. For those collectors who are immune to the hype and see the technological possibilities beyond market cycles, here are five blockchain art institutions catering to serious art investors.
One of the oldest blockchain art institutions, Art Blocks is still staying true to its goal of preserving generative art onchain. Created by Erick Calderon in 2021 via the infamous Chromie Squiggle - the founding collection of Art Blocks, which currently has a floor price of 4.5 ETH - holding an original Squiggle is still considered a true collector's move among onchain art lovers. Receiving a curatorial stamp of approval from Art Blocks often signals a successful future onchain career for artists. Today, Art Blocks continues to lead blockchain art curation and hosts multiple drops each week. Artists such as Kim Asendorf, Rafaël Rozendaal, Tyler Hobbs, and Dmitri Cherniak, among others, have launched their generative collections through Art Blocks.
Launched in 2022, Verse features a team of traditional art curators and critics from institutions such as Tate Britain, Christie's, and David Zwirner. The platform prides itself on bridging the traditional art world with blockchain innovation, introducing both curators and collectors to the technological shift in art. Verse has previously exhibited works by Simon Denny, Tyler Hobbs, and David Shrigley. Current live auctions feature works by Edward Burtynsky & Alkan Avcıoğlu, Kattie Morris, and Andy Duboc. Pricing ranges from 0.02 ETH to 10 ETH, with both one-of-one works and editions available.
Co-founded by Casey Reas, a renowned artist and co-creator of the Processing programming language, Feral File is one of the earliest art institutions in the crypto space. Defining itself as 'an online cultural institution for software art,' the project officially launched in 2019 with a2p, a collaborative work between Reas and Sean Moss-Pultz. Since then, Feral File has released numerous projects across various chains. Its curatorial approach blends globally recognized names like Yoko Ono, Refik Anadol, and John Gerrard with the next generation of artists such as 0xDEAFBEEF, Molly Soda, Iskra Velitchkova, and Maya Man. Feral File has collaborated with institutions like MoMA and the Musée d'Orsay. Artworks are available for collecting in a price range of 0.02 ETH to 6 ETH.
The newest addition to the NYC art scene, Heft has recently opened a permanent physical space. Representing artists pushing the boundaries of innovative technology for the past three years, Heft was founded by artist and curator Adam Heft Berninger. Formerly known as Tender, the project evolved from a curatorial venture into a full-fledged exhibition space. While it doesn't publicly position itself as blockchain-forward, many of the creators it features have been pioneers in early NFT experimentation. Artists such as Jan Robert Leegte, Marcel Schwittlick, Emi Kusano, and Kevin Abosch have collaborated with Heft. The inaugural show is on view until May 10, 2025, with some works available for purchase as NFTs.
An artist-run blockchain art gallery, Yeche Lange opened its physical location in New York's Financial District in May 2024. Founded by Jared Madere, Wretched Wrum, Anastasios Karnarez, Milo Conroy, and Miles Peyton, the gallery traces its roots to Bed-Stuy Love Affair, a mobile installation for the Whitney Museum in 2015, where Madere met Conroy. With a current exhibition featuring works by Kenny Schachter and Jim Spindle, Yeche Lange stands out for its avant-garde and experimental curatorial vision.
While Le Random doesn't currently offer works for sale, it remains a curatorial project worthy of attention. Positioned as a generative art institution, Le Random's mission is to 'contextualize on-chain generative art within art history, highlighting the medium's importance and impact through the collection and editorial.' Featuring works by Holly Herndon, Robert W. Franke, Rhea Myers, and many others, Le Random serves as a valuable educational source for understanding the landscape of generative onchain art. Their generative art timeline alone is worth a visit to the website.
Disclosure: I may own NFTs and tokens from the artists and projects I write about, all of which were purchased with my own funds.

Ether Trader Bets Millions on ETH Blasting Above $3.4K by June-End

Last month, CoinDesk reported that big money is becoming increasingly bullish on ether ETH, with price charts indicating a potential rally above $3,000. New evidence has now emerged, supporting those claims. On Thursday, a trader paid a premium of over $2 million to purchase a total of 61,000 contracts of June-end expiry ether call options at strikes $3,200 and $3,400, according to data source crypto options exchange Deribit. Theoretically, the $3,200 call is a bet that ether's price will rise from the current $2,460 to over $3,200 by the end of the month. The purchase of the $3,400 call indicates expectations for a move above that level. In other words, the trader anticipates a price surge of over 30% in three weeks. A call option gives the purchaser the right but not the obligation to buy the underlying asset at a predetermined price at a later date. A call buyer is implicitly bullish on the market and pays a premium for the asymmetric upside exposure. The premium paid, in this case, $2 million, is the maximum amount the buyer stands to lose in case the market doesn't rise as expected. The bullish flow is consistent with the renewed optimism among some analysts about ether's price prospects. According to Youwei Yang, Ph.D., chief economist at BIT Mining, protocol upgrades, institutional moves, and anticipation around new financial products have all come together to restore investor confidence in ether. Ether's parent blockchain, Ethereum, recently implemented the Pectra upgrade to enhance scalability, validator flexibility, and user experience, introducing key features like EIP-7702 to enable regular wallets to leverage smart contract capabilities. "The Pectra upgrade, which went live on May 7, has been a key turning point. By raising the validator cap from 32 to 2,048 ETH and doubling blob throughput, Ethereum took a major step forward in both staking efficiency and Layer-2 scalability," Yang said in an email to CoinDesk. "It's a clear signal that the network is serious about scaling and improving its core infrastructure. That's the kind of technical progress that brings not just developers, but also users and capital, back into the ecosystem," Yang added. Yang cited SharpLink Gaming's announcement that it would move $425 million into Ethereum as a treasury reserve asbold endorsement of ether as the corporate Treasury asset. "It reminds us of the early wave of Bitcoin treasury adoption by corporates, and it could be just the beginning of something similar for ETH," Yang noted. Lastly, speaking of institutional adoption, speculation has been circulating that U.S. regulators will soon approve a spot ether ETF with a staking mechanism, opening doors for institutions to take exposure to both the price and the staking yield, a feature missing in BTC in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

DOGE, ADA Nosedive 7% as Crypto Traders Digest ‘Recession' Sentiment

Dogecoin DOGE and Cardano's ADA ADA led the declines on Friday as crypto traders digested mixed macro data and recession concerns sparked by an escalating feud between President Donald Trump and tech titan Elon Musk. DOGE tumbled nearly 7% in 24 hours, while ADA slid 6.5% to reflect a risk-off shift among crypto traders. Bitcoin BTC bounced above $102,000 in Asian morning hours after falling to near $101,000 on Thursday night, with ether ETH, XRP XRP, BNB Chain's BNB BNB and Solana's SOL SOL down between 2%-5%. The spat between Musk and Trump rattled confidence, with Musk warning that the U.S. is likely headed for a technical recession this year — a concern that weighed heavily on speculative assets. 'The quarrels between Elon Musk and President Trump exposes divides that could hinder plans to reform the US economy, which is why cryptocurrencies as a whole dropped overnight,' said Jeff Mei, COO at BTSE, in a Telegram message to CoinDesk. 'However, we are still positive on the long-term viability of crypto markets, and given the success of Circle's IPO yesterday, it's clear that there are still many institutional investors who feel the same way,' Mei added. Some analysts pointed to the growing risk that political infighting could spill over into markets. 'While recent US macroeconomic reports influenced the sell-off, the negative outlook has been mostly driven by the escalating tensions between President Trump and Elon Musk,' said Nick Ruck, director at LVRG Research, told CoinDesk. 'Investors fear their feud could spill over into the markets. We remain optimistic for the long term as institutions continue to build within the greater crypto ecosystem,' Ruck added. Traders remain cautious as the market awaits clarity on the debt ceiling debate and the potential impact of Trump's proposed 'One Big Beautiful Act' on fiscal policy. Ethereum Foundation Unveils New Treasury Policy With 15% Opex Cap

The Ethereum Foundation published an updated treasury policy on Wednesday, outlining a series of new plans around token sales, fiat purchases and transparency practices designed to ensure the organization's "long-term agency, sustainability, and legitimacy." The EF, a Swiss non-profit, plays a central role in the Ethereum blockchain ecosystem. In addition to employing researchers, builders and community liaisons, the foundation was granted a large trove of ether (ETH) tokens at Ethereum's genesis which it uses to fund its operations and support other projects in the ecosystem. In a blog post on Wednesday, the foundation stated it plans to annually designate 15% of its treasury to operational expenses ("opex"), with a 2.5-year buffer kept at all times in its reserves. "We intend to reduce annual opex roughly linearly over the next five years, ending at a long-term 5% baseline," the foundation wrote. "This policy reflects our conviction that 2025-26 are likely to be pivotal for Ethereum, warranting enhanced focus on critical deliverables." In addition to periodically selling some of its ETH tokens onto the market, the foundation said it will occasionally diversify its holdings into fiat to ensure it can continue funding key ecosystem projects regardless of crypto market conditions. The foundation emphasized that decisions about managing its treasury — including occasional ETH sales — are made with operational planning and risk mitigation in mind. The foundation stated that its investments are not driven by speculative goals, but to ensure EF can continue to support the ecosystem well into the future. 'We will frequently reallocate funds between protocols for reasons such as changing market conditions, diversification, or new yield opportunities,' the foundation wrote. 'Withdrawals should be understood in this context and not as anti-endorsements.' Furthermore, the foundation promised to publish quarterly financial reports to its board, as well as an annual report, which in the past has been made public. On Oct. 31, 2024, the EF shared it had $970.2 million in treasury, down 39% from the previous time the organization reported its financial standings. Token-rich crypto foundations like the Ethereum Foundation have, for years, been at the center of many of the industry's biggest controversies. Foundations hold immense power within the ecosystems they serve, but they are frequently criticized for having opaque operations, generous compensation packages and vague responsibilities. Wednesday's post comes amid a broader push by the Ethereum community for foundation transparency and reform. In 2024, a pair of Ethereum Foundation researchers came under fire for quietly accepting token allocations from Ethereum-based projects, pushing the entire organization into a reckoning around conflicts of interest. Ethereum has also faced heightened competition from other blockchains over the past year, and some within the community have pushed for the Ethereum Foundation to act with more urgency in pushing along the ecosystem's tech development. Earlier this week, the foundation shared that it had laid off some members as part of a restructuring of its research arm.
