Bengaluru: On the eve of Kempegowda Jayanti, something beautiful unfolded in Bengaluru: Revival of Bandi Devara Utsava — a bullock cart procession that reflects the agrarian traditions and cultural symbols passed on since the times of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru.
On Thursday evening, decorated carts pulled by 10 pairs of adorned oxen were part of a procession that was taken out from the BBMP headquarters at NR Square to Kempegowda's statue in front of Vidhana Soudha through Cubbon Park. The spectacle, which was being taken out for the first time in the city, left motorists and onlookers spellbound. The event was organised by Bandi Devara Utsava Samiti to make the youngsters familiarise with the cultural heritage of the state, especially the Vokkaliga community in South Karnataka.
The procession featured an Okala Deepa (a huge lamp made out of rice flour), followed by carts that carried sweets which were later distributed near Vidhana Soudha. Men and women, dressed in traditional attire, were part of the procession. Yakshagana, Veeragase, Patakunitha, Karadi Kunitha, Somanakunitha and Dollu Kunitha artistes added colour to the event.

Neelakanta R Gowda, a participant, said: "We don't want to preach history; we want people to see and feel it. That's why we brought the Bandi back to the streets. It is important to teach our kids the significance of Kempegowda."
Why bullock cart?
Thalakaadu Chikkarange Gowda, who is researching on Kempegowda, said: "The bullock cart has prominence in Indian history, and it is considered a sacred material for farmers. The Vokaliga community also has a close connection with the cart. When it comes to Kempegowda, history says Ranabyregowdaru, with his family and six other brothers, migrated from the then Hoysala dynasty from Kanchi to their motherland Aavthi near Nandi Hills.
Ranabyregowda is the forefather of Kempegowda, who formed Bengaluru. Hence, we have brought 10 pairs of bullock carts as a tribute to Kempegowda and his family."

Rain-hit green gram crop shows signs of nutrient stress in Belagavi
Belagavi: Due to heavy rains and increased moisture, the green gram crop is facing nutrient deficiency in Belagavi district. To date, green gram has been sown in more than 32,000 hectares out of the total 41,000 hectares of land meant for the crop in the district. Farmers are concerned as the leaves of the crop are turning yellow in many places. Agriculture department sources said early sowing of the crop this year is one of the reasons for this effect. According to agricultural officials, this time, the sown crop is suffering from increased moisture. Farmers are worried about leaves turning yellow and preserving the crop. Green gram was sown in a total of 41,066 hectares in the entire district. The highest area of green gram sowing in the district is in Ramdurg taluk, with the crop being grown in 19,610 hectares. There are 18,181 hectares of green gram crop area in Savadatti, 1,936 hectares in Yaragatti, and 260 hectares in Hukkeri taluk. The green gram crop has already sprouted in more than half the area, while heavy rainfall has hindered sowing in the rest. If the crop is less than 20 days old, 2 grams of 19:19:19 fertiliser and 2 grams of 13:0:45 fertiliser should be mixed in 1 litre of water and sprayed on the leaves. Sidagouda Modagi, the president of Bharateeya Krishik Samaj (BKS), said that green gram is a sensitive crop. Even slight changes in the climate can affect the growth of the crop. The steps recommended by the officials can be followed, but the crop protection methods that farmers have been following through years of experience are the most effective. If there is more sunshine, the moisture-induced diseases will be reduced. HD Kolekar, joint director of the agriculture department, said the department is ready to help farmers in all situations. Internal roads in Kharar area turn death traps
1 2 Mohali: A year after the completion of sewerage pipeline and manhole installation in Shivalik City, Kharar, the dug-up internal roads remain in a dangerously neglected state — posing a serious threat to public safety and health. With the onset of monsoon, the roads have turned into treacherous stretches of mud, slush, and water-logging, drawing outrage from residents who have now approached senior government officials for immediate intervention. Led by advocate S S Dhanjal, the residents have submitted a formal complaint to the additional secretary and director of local government, Punjab, as well as to the deputy commissioner (DC) Mohali and SDM Kharar, invoking Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees the Right to Life and Personal Liberty. "The roads in Shivalik Homes, Sector 127, and adjoining areas have become death traps," reads the complaint. "The sewerage work was completed over a year ago, but the authorities have failed to remove the dug-up soil or repair the broken roads. The condition is not just inconvenient—it is life-threatening."
