Britain's top ten favourite Indian dishes revealed from Samosas to Tandoori – where does yours rank?

The Sun02-05-2025

A QUARTER of Brits are eating Indian-inspired foods and snacks more than 100 days a year, according to research.
A poll of 2,000 respondents revealed 32 curries are cooked up annually, and the most frequent Indian snacks to be chomped are onion bhajis and samosas.

At least 24 takeaways are ordered annually by 30 per cent of Indian-lovers – with tikka masala, korma, and biryani being the most favoured main meals, practically a takeaway every other week.
But it's bad news for bland British favourites, as 54 per cent say Indian flavours have influenced the way they eat.
In fact, the UK's love for Indian flavours runs so deep, one in 10 (nine per cent) reckon they eat more Indian-inspired foods than traditional British snacks and dishes, with 16 per cent eating a balance between the two.
A spokesperson from Peperami, which commissioned the research, has released a chicken tikka skewers range, said: 'Britain is head over heels for Indian flavours.
'With a quarter of us tucking into spicy snacks and dishes over 100 times a year, it's clear we're a nation that craves more excitement on our plates.
'Plain, boring foods that taste like cardboard just don't cut it any more.
'Brits want big, punchy flavours, and the poll has shown they're bored stiff when it comes to the British options; it's time for something with a real bite."
The research also revealed 69 per cent like to be experimental and try new Indian-inspired dishes or flavours - while 29 per cent went as far as to say they'd eat such foods every day if they could.
On the spice scale, 63 per cent like it spicy, with 13 per cent keen on foods that are extra hot, and 18 per cent confident they could take on a Vindaloo.
It also emerged 32 per cent are bored of their current go-to options, according to the OnePoll.com data.
Chef shares his Chicken Keema Karahi recipe
When considering British snacks, 38 per cent believe they should include healthier ingredients, and 29 per cent would like to see more variety.
Bigger flavour (21 per cent) and more spice (18 per cent) would also be welcomed, with 35 per cent believing most savoury snacks in shops today are 'boring' and 31 per cent seeing them as predictable.
Cheese and onion and salt and vinegar were the flavours considered most overused or uninspired.
Peperami's skewers were launched at The Glades shopping centre in Bromley, where shoppers were tasked with put their hand into a mystery box to pull out prizes from merchandise to a year's supply of the chicken tikka snack.
A spokesperson from the brand added: 'British snacks can be boring – the research findings show us as much.
'And people nowadays are looking for varied flavours and something more exciting.
'A pork pie, scotch egg, or crisps from a supermarket are no longer going to cut it when people want a flavour hit.'
More broadly, when it comes to snacking, five snacks are consumed between meals in a typical week, according to all respondents.
And 40 per cent admit they have the same snacks on a regular basis, occasionally throwing a new one into the mix every so often.

Michelle Keegan lands six-figure deal in first major job since having baby Palma

Just three months after giving birth to her first child with husband Mark Wright, Michelle Keegan has landed a huge deal worth six-figures, it has been reported Michelle Keegan has signed a six-figure advertising deal just three months after becoming a new mum. The former Coronation Street star has been embracing life as a first-time mum since welcoming baby Palma Elizabeth Wright into the world on March 6. Michelle and Mark Wright have been enjoying their time as new parents over the last three months. ‌ Fans have been given a glimpse into their first holiday abroad as a family of three last month as Michelle and Mark, both 38, headed to Spain with two-month-old Palma. Michelle revealed to her followers that Palma has been given the nickname Princess P, whilst confirming that it was their first holiday. She wrote in the caption of her post: "Princess P's first family holiday." ‌ But it seems it is back to business for Michelle who has just signed a deal to become the new face of Sky. She is set to film a series of promo clips — which will be shown around the globe — with fellow British actor, Luther star Idris Elba. She landed the deal after becoming a major player for Sky, with her comedy-drama Brassic one of the most popular series to air on the platform. A source told The Sun: 'Michelle has really been enjoying maternity leave with Palma, but she'll be back to work soon to film these new adverts for Sky. She has signed a six-figure deal for the job and is thrilled to have been chosen to appear alongside Idris, who has been their 'face'. 'Brassic is ending after the seventh series and Michelle is keen to still be a part of the Sky brand. Landing this ad is huge for Michelle, as she's fast becoming a brand in her own right. Everything she touches seems to turn to gold.' Michelle Keegan is now a household name after appearing in some of Britain's favourite TV shows including Our Girl and Coronation Street. However, the star went from working at a make-up counter when she finished school to a successful actress with what seems like a dream life. ‌ The Stockport star didn't have plans when she first left school and found herself working at Selfridges in the Trafford Centre on a make-up counter and at Manchester Airport as a check-in agent. But she seems to have found her feet when it comes to success in the wolrd of TV as she secured first acting appearance on Coronation Street when she was offered the role of Tina McIntyre after just her second audition as an actress. The talented actress beat 900 other people to the role on the soap and just two weeks later she stepped onto the cobbles and began her career. TV star Michelle Keegan may be earning mega money now but she will have to put in the overtime if she want to catch up with her husband Mark Wright. It was reported two years ago that Mark is now worth almost £14million as he continues to grow his incredible property empire. With an estimated combined net worth of around £20m, it's no wonder the pair splashed the cash on their dream home three years ago.

'I stayed in a UK Center Parcs dupe and the location was simply unreal'

Louise, a mum-of-two, spent three nights at the retreat with her family and was very impressed with the facilities - as well as the price tag Center Parcs is a renowned UK staycation staple for many Brits, with vast parks in some of the most beautiful, rural settings. With sites in Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Wiltshire and Newark to name a few, getting to one of these locations couldn't be easier for many holidaymakers who don't want the fuss of flying. But, with many activities costing extra once there, the parks are often touted as expensive, and can rack up quite the bill. ‌ But one mum has revealed a budget-friendly option. Louise, a mum of two children aged nine and six, has come up with a cost-effective alternative that she claims offers a comparable experience without breaking the bank. ‌ "If you're looking for a cheap Center Parcs alternative, then this could be right up your street," she said on her Bored with Kids TikTok video. "We spent three nights here for just under 500 quid, or £40 per person per night." READ MORE: 'I'm a former check-in agent and the worst time to travel is not during summer' She's talking about Sherwood Castle Retreat in Newark, Nottinghamshire, a holiday site around 14-miles from its Center Parcs competitor. In snippets from her video, Louise remarked: "It is heavily influenced by its location near Sherwood Forest and by the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. There are loads of original props from the movie here, including the actual reception.", reports Nottinghamshire Live. The mum took to sharing a video of their delightful woodland lodge, replete with kitchen and dining area, a snug living room complete with TV and children's bunk beds, not forgetting the alluring log burner. She explained: "The woodland lodges have hot tubs, and are pretty similar to the Centre Parcs ones with the layout," further revealing, "We even had a log burner here, which was lovely at night." She expressed additional perks: "Plus you have tennis, bowling, and swimming available before 5 pm. You can actually book out the whole pool for yourselves if you wanted. They even have a little animal farm here too. Although you probably don't wanna be staying too close to it as they have two massive cockerels and these woke us up before 5am everyday." However, the lack of Wi-Fi and underwhelming play park and mini golf offerings were downsides she didn't shy away from noting. Wrapping up her review, Louise added: "However, it is less than half the price of the cheapest Centre Parcs lodge, it's in a beautiful location, and there are loads of lovely places to visit nearby,". ‌ Louise's video has since stirred up chatter online, with viewers chiming in with their thoughts, including one who recalled, "We stayed there, it was amazing." Several followers expressed gratitude to Louise for highlighting such a gem, with comments pouring in like, "This place looks great and brilliant price." Nestled in a 40-acre woodland in the legendary Sherwood Forest, the Sherwood Castle Holiday Forest is a serene getaway situated near Rufford, Nottinghamshire, just two miles south of Ollerton and a mere stone's throw, 20 miles north, from Nottingham. Set amongst the rustling trees of this storied forest, guests are greeted every morning by the tranquil sounds of nature. ‌ The lodges come complete with modern comforts like en-suites stocked with complimentary toiletries, fitted kitchens for self-catering stays, toasty fireplaces, and televisions. Several units also offer a mix of double and bunk bedrooms, catering perfectly to family holidays. Winners of Race Across The World 2025 crowned

Housewife Caroline, 60, and 21-year-old Tom became the first mother-and-son team to win after reaching the final checkpoint in Kanniyakumari, the southernmost tip of mainland India, to claim their £20,000 prize. Four teams in the 14,100km (8,761-mile) race successfully crossed Asia, the world's largest continent, to make it to the finish line. During Wednesday's episode, Caroline and Tom had to find Vattakottai Fort where the final sign-in book was waiting. After turning the page to discover they were the first team to make it to the landmark they hugged, overcome with emotion. Writing their names in the book, Tom said: 'That's a really good feeling, I'm lost for words, I can't believe it. 'Fifty-one days racing through countries I never thought I'd go to. 'I never thought we'd come this far, I never thought we'd achieve so much and I've never been prouder of my mum – she got me through it.' Sisters Elizabeth and Letitia came second, just 19 minutes behind the winners, with teenage couple Fin and Sioned third. Brothers Brian and Melvyn arrived in fourth place, three hours and five minutes behind Caroline and Tom. The winning pair began the last leg in the lead, six hours and 54 minutes ahead of Elizabeth and Letitia. They started from the seventh checkpoint, Panaji in Goa with just over 1,000km (600 miles) to traverse across the southern Indian states to reach the finish line. Reflecting on their win, Tom said the race was 'the best experience of my life'. Caroline said: 'We've learnt so much, we've enjoyed it and to actually win it as well as to have the experience is the best thing that could have happened to us.' The contestants traversed areas of China, Nepal and India, covering more than 14,000km over 51 days. The teams will reunite for a special episode airing at 9pm on Wednesday June 18 on BBC One where they will reflect on the race and the impact it has had on their lives. All eight episodes of Race Across The World are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
