A-League: Daniel Arzani leaves Victory to join Ferencvaros
Socceroos playmaker Daniel Arzani has left Melbourne Victory to join Hungarian champions Ferencvaros. The move marks a return to Europe for 26-year-old Arzani, who after leaving Melbourne City in 2018 to sign as a teenager in 2018 with English Premier League giants Manchester City had loan spells with Celtic (Scotland), Utrecht (Netherlands), AGF (Denmark) and Lommel (Belgium), returned to the A-League in 2022 to join Macarthur FC. Arzani returned to Melbourne the following year to link with the Victory, where he has spent the past two seasons, helping the club to successive A-League grand final appearances. 'My time at Melbourne Victory has been incredibly rewarding,' Arzani said. 'The club has played a key role in my growth both on and off the pitch over the past couple of seasons, allowing me to enjoy my football and do what I do best. Arzani's time at the Victory has also coincided with his return to the national team after an absence of six years. He has scored one goal – against Hungary in June 2018 – in his 10 appearances for the Socceroos. Arzani's move to Ferencvaros, who are coached by Irishman and former Tottenham and Liverpool striker Robbie Keane, could also give him the chance to compete in the UEFA Champions League, with his new club in the competition's second qualifying round. Arzani – who had also been linked with a move to Scottish club Hearts – is the second player in the past two days to leave the Victory, with left-back Kasey Bos also heading to Europe after a signing a four-year-deal with German Bundesliga club Mainz 05 for a deal that will reportedly net the Melbourne club a transfer fee of $880,000. George Russell powered his Mercedes to the top of the times ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris in Friday's second practice for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix. Aussie Oscar Piastri was more than four tenths of a second away from Russell's time sixth fastest. As four-time champion Max Verstappen struggled to reprise his pace-setting form for Red Bull in the opening practice session, Russell clocked a best lap in one minute and 12.123 seconds to beat Norris by 0.028 seconds. Both McLarens soon climbed into the top ten after taking a methodical approach to the use of their new upgrades, Norris rising to second, but Mercedes with Russell on top and Antonelli third, appeared to be strongest with 15 minutes remaining. As the teams began race-trim runs, there were 17 drivers separated by one second, ahead of Franco Colapinto's Alpine - clear evidence that a closely-fought contest is in prospect for Saturday's critical qualifying.
