Misericordia review – desire and dread in rural France

The Guardian29-03-2025

Plenty of film-makers explore the intersection between desire and violence; it's a recurring theme in the work of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, for example. But in the films of Stranger By the Lake director Alain Guiraudie, the overlap between the two is so great, it almost feels as if they are one and the same thing.
In this slippery French-language thriller, boyish, floppy-fringed Jérémie (Félix Kysyl) returns from Toulouse to the village of Saint-Martial for a funeral. His arrival unlocks a gnawing hunger among the villagers: Martine (Catherine Frot), the widow of the dead man, invites Jérémie to stay in her spare room for as long as he chooses, on the understanding that his personal space is hers to invade. Martine's bullish son Vincent (Jean-Baptiste Durand) is unsettled by Jérémie's presence, but there's a menacing intimacy to their half-serious bouts of woodland wrestling.
Then there's the local priest (Jacques Develay), with his candid, prying gaze, who always seems to be picking mushrooms at the same time as Jérémie, and whose interest in the younger man goes well beyond his spiritual wellbeing. And what of Jérémie himself? Is there a motive behind his prowling visits to sad-sack local farmer Walter (David Ayala) beyond just reconnecting with an old friend over glasses of pastis?
A murder raises the stakes, but even before the mystery surrounding the death of a central character, Guiraudie seeds Misericordia with needling sexual tension and latent savagery through an ominous, skin-prickling score by Marc Verdaguer and Claire Mathon's snaking, shifty camerawork. It isn't entirely satisfying – there are too many unfulfilled subplots and murky motivations – but this intriguingly tricky drama has a perverse appeal.

Love Island viewers threaten Ofcom complaints after very awkward scene

One Love Island couple has shocked viewers by getting down to business and locking lips on their first day as a pair on the ITV2 reality show after fears that a bombshell would split them up Love Island fans were left reeling just one day into the new series as one couple locked lips. Tensions reached a boiling point today as Shakira set her sights on finding a new connection after American bombshell Antonia stole her man. With the fear of being dumped from the island hanging over her, Shakira made it her mission to speak to as many of the boys as possible - but her female co-stars were not impressed. Meg seemed to be the most rattled after spotting her partner Dejon deep in conversation with Shakira, and nervously told the other girls: "I don't have my man, Dejon's gone – that's it!" ‌ ‌ However, the personal trainer was quick to reassure Meg that she is his favourite person in the villa, adding "You haven't got anything to worry about". Although Meg got the encouragement she needed, her counterpart Megan soon felt the pains of being on the chopping block as Shakira pulled Tommy for a chat by the pool. As things started to get more flirty between Shakira and Tommy, Megan decided she needed to make a bold move. She told the other girls: "I think I need to lipse him." Her friends were quick to egg her on, encouraging the Irish girl to lock her relationship down. Megan interrupted Tommy and Shakira's conversation, taking her man to the terrace where she admitted: "That made me a little bit jealous." One thing led to another, and Megan ended up claiming her man with a passionate kiss, much to the excitement of the Islanders down below who cheered them on. Viewers were shocked to see the stars getting physical so quickly, and took to X to share their thoughts on the scene, with one saying: "The kiss was way too soon." Another agreed: "Getting jealous and literally doing a forced kiss over someone you've known less than 24 hours is beyond unhinged." ‌ Some fans even declared they were going to make an official complaint to media watchdogs about the incident, with one saying: "Naa I'm submitting an Ofcom complaint, that kiss was too cringe, made me feel mad uncomfortable." Before coming on the ITV2 show, Megan revealed that she isn't fussy about a man's looks, saying she doesn't mind someone who is "scrawny" or has "a bit of a dad bod". Despite her easy-going nature when it comes to outward appearances, it seems that once another woman is becoming a threat to her love life, she has what it takes to go in for the kill. Meanwhile, Tommy came across as a down-to-earth lad, who admitted he has been knocked back a few times once girls heard what he did for a job. The landscape gardener said he wants a girlfriend who is caring and most importantly, doesn't take herself too seriously. He laughed: "I don't know if that's asking for too much, but I want a bit of everything. I haven't got a specific type in terms of looks, though."

Eisteddfod yr Urdd is ‘huge opportunity' for Newport

Tredegar House will welcome thousands of people to the Welsh-language youth cultural festival for its 2027 edition. Newport City Council cabinet members agreed on Monday to provide an extra £100,000 of funding to support the event. The money, from the council's events reserve fund, will be ring-fenced for hire and venue charges, licensing matters, and any park and ride services. Cllr Emma Stowell-Corten, the cabinet member for culture, said the Urdd has 'a huge economic value to the areas that host it' worth millions of pounds. She said more than 15,000 children and young people participate in the festival, which will also attract thousands more visitors. Cllr Rhian Howells, whose ward includes Tredegar House, said she was 'absolutely thrilled' Newport would host the Urdd. 'Having seen the level of income it generates for the city… I would be very supportive of the extra funding,' she added. Other cabinet members also welcomed the possibilities the festival could bring to the city. Plaid Cymru pledges to free access to Urdd Eisteddfod for low-income families Newport is a 'city on the rise' with a bright future - and this is why Cllr Jason Hughes, reflecting on his own appearance on the Urdd stage as a youngster, said the experience could be 'life-changing' for young participants. The Urdd will be a 'huge opportunity', said Cllr Deb Davies – while Cllr James Clarke said the prospect of welcoming an estimated 60,000 visitors will be a 'massive boost' for Newport. 'What better way to say we are a proud Welsh city,' added Cllr Dimitri Batrouni, the city council leader. Preparing for the event will be no small feat, however, with around 90 acres of land required for the festival ground, car parking and campsites. Schools could be used as rehearsal spaces, while teachers and other support staff will likely need to be available to support children with their preparations. The 2027 Urdd will reportedly be the largest Welsh-language event in the city in two decades. The council describes the prospect as a 'huge event and opportunity for Newport' which will also align with Welsh Government ambitions to reach a target of one million Welsh speakers nationwide by the year 2050.

Could Charli XCX be joined by New Zealand royalty at Heaton Park, or could a French dynamic duo collaborate with her once again? Who could be one of the DJs in the VIP stage and could they become the next UK prime minister? Here are your last minute-rumours ahead of Parklife 2025 this weekend in Manchester Forget Glastonbury Festival rumours for one week (please!), as we look to the more immediate future: Parklife 2025 in Manchester this week. While there's still guesswork involved who might be Patchwork and who else might fill those TBA slots at Worthy Farm, things seem a little less speculative when it comes to this weekend's event at Heaton Park, with the full timetable now available through the official Parklife app. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad That doesn't mean there won't be any surprises this year, though. Instead of solely looking at secret sets, we've taken a look through Reddit and the depths of social media to see who people think might make a guest appearance at Parklife this year. Be it Lorde or French house icons teaming up with a 'brat,' or a guerrilla gig potentially before or after what will be an incredibly lively set, here's five rumours currently doing the rounds before festival-goers converge on Manchester this weekend Last minute Parklife 2025 rumours From who could guest with Charli XCX to who might play a guerrilla gig this weekend; here's a round up of the last minute rumours for Parklife 2025. | Getty Images Will Lorde or Air join Charli XCX this weekend? There has been increased speculation that New Zealand musician Lorde could make a surprise appearance during Charli XCX's set. The singer, on the brink of releasing her brand new album, Virgin, has featured regularly alongside Charli XCX in recent months, thanks to their stunning collaborative effort Girl, So Confusing . Lorde was even seen on stage during both of the BRAT performer's Coachella 2025 sets in April. Given their recent proximity and obvious chemistry, a repeat performance in Manchester is high on many fans' wish lists. Lorde is due to play a full UK tour in November 2025, but a quick pop-up this weekend isn't out of the question for a collaborator. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad But could an appearance by French dance giants Air be on the cards too? Charli XCX famously performed with the duo in Paris during their June 8, 2025 show. With Air's next tour date taking place in Dublin on June 17, 2025 – just two days after Parklife – a quick journey across the Irish Sea could certainly be in order for a surprise cameo. Who could perform alongside 50 Cent as he returns to the United Kingdom? Though wishful thinking means some hope either Eminem or Dr. Dre makes an appearance at Parklife 2025, there are still members of 50 Cent's G-Unit who could make the trip to appear on stage with him. The name Tony Yayo frequently gets mentioned, owing to him being the most consistent member of G-Unit alongside 50 Cent and having regularly appeared with the rapper. However, some think another core member, Lloyd Banks , could also be a guest during the set. Neither artist currently has independent tour dates scheduled, and if Fiddy is bringing any of the crew, those two names are highly probable. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Could Jora Smith bring on a who's who of UK rap icons? Jorja Smith's soulful R&B often blends seamlessly with the UK's vibrant rap and grime scenes. Fans are hoping she might invite some of her esteemed collaborators to share the stage. A top contender is Loyle Carner , with whom she released the acclaimed Loose Ends, and a joint performance would be a smooth and well-received addition to her set. What's more, there's significant buzz around AJ Tracey . The pair just reunited for their brand new single Crush in February 2025, and their chemistry is undeniable – a surprise live rendition of this fresh track would send the crowd wild. While a cameo from giants like Stormzy would be truly monumental, such high-profile appearances are often closely guarded secrets, and a full "who's who" might be as wishful as some of the wildest 50 Cent reunion rumours. However, with Jorja's extensive network of influential UK artists, her set remains a hotbed for potential unexpected collaborations. With a history of guerrilla gigs, will Loopdaddy take to the streets of Manchester? One of the highlights I'll be missing out on could potentially sneak a set on the streets of Manchester this weekend. We're talking about Loopdaddy himself, Marc Rebillet. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Given his official festival slot at Parklife in Manchester, it wouldn't be out of character for the incredibly fun producer to set up a quick, unannounced performance in a public space before or after his main set. Perhaps a quick gig at Victoria or Piccadilly Station could be something fans traveling to the event might spot? Guest DJs on the VIP Stage; is Andy Burnham about to spin the decks? Official Parklife information often explicitly mentions 'VIP DJs and special guests playing on the VIP stage, which is separate from the rest of the festival.' There's also the new Backstage Ticket which grants 'on-stage access at The Hangar stage' and access to 'exclusive VIP area with luxury loos, charging points, and a street food market and VIP cocktail bar.' While not a 'secret' headliner per se, this does pose a unique opportunity for some very important people to step into the DJ booth and lay on some tunes for those with the privilege to be there – and of all the names we've mentioned, why not add Andy Burnham as one of those potential guest DJs? Known for his own occasional DJ sets at local venues, it's not entirely out of the question for Burnham to pop up for a quick, unannounced turn on the decks. Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was well-known in Auckland for getting behind the decks before standing in front of the world as the then-leader of Aotearoa Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Do you have an event you'd like to share with us?
