Fonseca enjoys Wimbledon debut with win over Briton Fearnley
LONDON - Fast-improving Brazilian Joao Fonseca knocked British hopeful Jacob Fearnley out in the first round at Wimbledon, with a confident 6-4 6-1 7-6(5) win on Monday, confirming his credentials as one of the most exciting young talents in tennis.
Fonseca, at 18 the youngest man in the men's singles draw and on his Wimbledon senior debut, used power and variety in his serve and his trademark brutal forehand to overpower 23-year-old Fearnley, who at 51 is ranked three places above the Brazilian.
Fonseca, knocked out in the first round of qualifying here last year, has raced up the tennis rankings, breaking into the top 100 at the Australian Open and reaching the third round at Roland Garros before losing to British number one Jack Draper.Less than two years ago he was playing in junior tournaments and caught the eye after reaching the boys' quarter-finals here and winning the 2023 boys' U.S. Open.
"I've been working a lot," he said in an interview on a sun-drenched Court One. "The key is work, believe and dream."It was the Brazilian's third victory over his "great friend" Fearnley this year and he capitalised on some nervous and erratic serving from the Briton, who produced 10 double faults in the match often at crucial moments."At the beginning of the match we were both very nervous," Fonseca said. "There were no rallies - we were nervous."Under pressure to match the free-hitting Fonseca, Fearnley served a double fault to concede the first set and was simply blown away in the second with the Brazilian whipping winners seemingly at will. The stats showed he finished the match with 29 winners to Fearnley's 16.The British number two rallied in the third set and forced a tiebreak but the cool-headed Brazilian teenager pulled out two aces to bring up match point and won the game when the Briton put a return long. Hawk landed his groundbreaking "900" - 2-1/2 full mid-air rotations - at the 1999 X Games in a moment that helped propel the sport out of the subculture and into the mainstream. The Birdhouse "Falcon 2" board is expected to fetch between $500,000 and $700,000 when it goes on the block in Los Angeles on September 23, according to Julien's Auctions. Hawk called the moment he became the first skateboarder to land the trick in front of a roaring X Games crowd after several failed attempts on June 27, 1999 "the best day of my life." "It was a huge moment in my career - the result of years of persistence and getting back up after every fall," he said in a press release. Other items up for sale include Hawk's signed helmet, knee pads, sneakers, and the 1999 X Games Vert Finals bronze medal. "I never imagined that my board, pads or helmet from that day would be of any interest to collectors," he said. A portion of the sale proceeds will benefit The Skatepark Project (TSP), Hawk's foundation supporting skatepark construction in underserved communities. TSP grant programs have awarded over $13 million to help fund nearly 700 public skateparks in all 50 U.S. states, enjoyed by an estimated 17 million people annually, according to the non-profit organisation's website. The Spaniard, who should have been brimming with confidence after capturing titles in Rome, the French Open and Queen's Club Championships in the lead-up to the grasscourt Grand Slam, edged Fabio Fognini 7-5 6-7(5) 7-5 2-6 6-1 in 4-1/2 hours. Alcaraz had demolished 24-times Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and collected his second Wimbledon crown on his last trip to Centre Court but he looked out of sorts against an inspired Fognini. "It felt like it was the first time," five-times Grand Slam champion Alcaraz told reporters. "Wimbledon is different. It doesn't matter, the winning streak I have right now, that I've been playing great on grass, that I have been preparing really well the week before. "I could feel today I was really nervous in the beginning. Being the first match on Centre Court, it's a huge privilege for me even though I played last year the first match. "I try to deal with the nerves the best way possible. I was struggling a little bit ... But it was great. It's a big honour to start the tournament there in Centre Court." Alcaraz next meets Oliver Tarvet in what should be a much more straightforward test considering the British qualifier is ranked in the 700s, but after a jolt to his system on a blazing day, the 22-year-old is not taking anyone lightly. "If he's here, he's in the second round, it's because he deserves it. He's playing a great tennis," Alcaraz added. "I don't have to think like I'm going to win easily. I have to have respect for him. Playing or trying to play my best, step on the court thinking that if I don't play my best, I can lose. "I've seen him play, and he has a good level. Even though he's not playing professionally or he has played just his first tour level match, it doesn't matter. "I have to think that it's going to be a really tough match. It's going to be a difficult one I have to be ready for, and I'm trying to play my best without thinking about the ranking and anything else."
