Five Scots star in Lions' thumping win over Western Force

Five Scotland stars were involved in the British & Irish Lions tour-opening victory over the Western Force in Perth, with Huw Jones making his debut.Pierre Schoeman, Scott Cummings, Finn Russell and Sione Tuipulotu were all in from the start while Jones entered in the 55th minute.Russell was making his first start of the tour, having missed last weekend's loss to Argentina after guiding Bath to the Premiership title in England. He started in fine fashion, as his cross-kick helped set up captain Dan Sheehan's opening try, before almost scoring a fine solo effort with a disguised tap-and-go in the 35th minute, popping up for Elliot Daly to score when he himself was held short.Tuipulotu was shifted from outside to inside centre and looked slightly more comfortable in partnership with Garry Ringrose. He's the only player to play every minute of the tour so far.Eagle-eyed fans also noticed that Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams limped from the field after his second try, seemingly nursing a hamstring injury.Lions' head coach Andy Farrell has said it's "too early to know" what the impact will be, but Scotland's Ben White will surely be high in Farrell's thinking if a new number nine is needed.

'You can't buy those experiences' - Knoester on Scottish Cup win

Mats Knoester said it was a quick and easy decision to sign a contract extension at Aberdeen to 2029. The Dutch centre-back, who signed from Ferencvaros in February on a two-and-a-half-year deal, made 17 Dons appearances last season, including the full Scottish Cup final victory over Celtic as Jimmy Thelin's side prevailed on penalties."It was quite fast that we agreed [a new deal]," he told club media."I've had a good past half year with a great ending, of course. "Even if I take that away and I just look at how I got here, how I was welcomed, how I was feeling, my family, it's been really good so there not a lot of thoughts needed to agree on a contract."If anything could have swayed it, though, Aberdeen's historic Scottish Cup win in May might have just done was a rock at the back as Jimmy Thelin's side shocked Celtic. And that shock continued for the defender in the days to come."It was the days after really you good feel how big it was," he added. "The parade, almost everyone was out - I didn't even know so many people lived in Aberdeen - the streets were full so we could definitely see how much it meant."You can't buy those experiences, it's in the soul of the club and it's an experience for life."

Agony for the Matildas as late goal denies new coach Joe Montemurro dream start

A 91st-minute strike from Mirjam Kastelec has earned Slovenia a 1-1 draw with the Matildas in Perth, denying Joe Montemurro two wins from two games as Australian coach and spoiling an improved performance from the hosts. After a scoreless opening half at HBF Park on Sunday evening, the Australians secured a deserved breakthrough five minutes after the break when Remy Seimsen set Ellie Carpenter up to float a cutback to Michelle Heyman, who placed a side-footed volley into the net. But a late flurry from the Slovenians was rewarded a minute into added time when an effort from Naja Poje Mihelic bounced off the post and back into the path of fellow substitute Kastelec, who slid in front of a desperately retreating Australian defence to fire home. It dampened a performance from the Australians that showed signs of improvement as they continue to adapt to the new possession-based principles of Montemurro - even if the margin was well off the 3-0 victory they secured over the same opposition on Thursday evening. After a midweek win characterised by struggles with the Slovenian press and sloppy turnovers, the hosts were cleaner with the ball in their defensive third in the re-match, which resulted in fewer opportunities off giveaways for the Europeans. This was accompanied by improvements in the side's movement and combination play going forward, particularly from Carpenter and Amy Sayer on the right. The promising build-ups, however, were frequently let down by the final ball or stymied by desperate last-gasp defending. That was until the 50th minute, when Seimsen's inch-perfect ball for Carpenter set the wingback up to put it on a plate for Heyman. Charli Grant came close to killing the game off in the 70th minute but had her shot cleared off the line, before the visitors raised their intensity. Having hardly been sighted to that point, Mackenzie Arnold was called into action in the 90th minute to make a quick reaction to deny Kastelec, but the Australian keeper could do little about the 22-year-old's effort a minute later. Seeking to bounce back, Montemurro will now shuffle his deck for fixtures against Panama on July 5 and July 8, with Carpenter, Cooney-Cross and Kennedy amongst eight players leaving camp, with eight new players set to jet into West Australia.

McGhee 'taken aback' by quality in 'intense' Motherwell training

Jordan McGhee says he was "taken aback at the quality" at Motherwell when he joined the Scotland reported that the versatile 28-year-old had penned a pre-contract agreement with the Lanarkshire side in January, and officially joined on 2 June on a two-year deal."It's a long time coming," he said in a club video. "I stayed at Dundee the rest of the season and gave my all there and now to be here finally, is really exciting."McGhee has not only had to get familiar with new team-mates, but with a new manager too in Jens Berthel far, the training has been "intense"."The boys and our staff are really working hard and taking on board the new ideas from the gaffer," he said."It's really intense, we're at a high tempo and we've worked on both sides of the game now - attacking and defending."Since I came in I've actually been taken aback by how good the quality was in training. "The players, obviously having played against them, their standards are excellent. "I'm a big believer in training the way you play and so far training has been outstanding. "I'm just looking forward to working hard and getting on the pitch with the boys and hopefully winning many games."On and off the field, it's a club that's always growing."If I can help on the pitch that would be ideal. On a personal note, I want to improve as a football player and learn different styles and adapt my game. "It's always exciting to change myself and just looking forward to getting started with it."
