Dhanush and Nagarjuna's social thriller Kuberaa has reportedly sold its OTT rights to Amazon Prime Video for ₹50 crore, one of the biggest digital deals of 2025.
Sekhar Kammula's social thriller Kuberaa hit theatres on June 20 and has been on a steady upward climb since its release. Starring an ensemble cast led by Dhanush, Rashmika Mandanna, Nagarjuna Akkineni, and Jim Sarbh, the film has garnered widespread appreciation from both audiences and critics, with social media buzzing about its performances, storyline, and relevance.
The film's success hasn't just been limited to the box office. Kuberaa has also sparked significant buzz around its digital release. According to a report by OTT Play, Amazon Prime Video has acquired the post-theatrical streaming rights for a staggering ₹50 crore. This makes it one of the biggest OTT acquisition deals in recent times, a testament to the film's strong appeal and the star power of both Dhanush and Nagarjuna.
Interestingly, one of the film's producers recently revealed that Amazon was firm about the June 20 release date, allegedly warning of a ₹10 crore cut from the agreed-upon deal if the premiere was delayed. The incident underlines a growing trend in the industry where OTT giants now exert considerable influence over theatrical release strategies.
Despite modest expectations based on advance booking trends—projected at around ₹7.5 crore—the film surprised trade analysts by pulling in an impressive ₹13 crore on its opening day. Though some considered the figure slightly below par for a multi-starrer of this scale, strong word-of-mouth and positive audience feedback could drive Kuberaa to sustained success in the coming weeks.
With its potent mix of gripping narrative, stellar cast performances, and increasing momentum at the box office, Kuberaa seems poised to become both a commercial and streaming success. Fans who missed it in theatres can look forward to its digital debut on Amazon Prime Video following the film's theatrical run.
According to News18 Showsha review of the film, 'There's nothing that's surprising with Kuberaa. We have a familiar redemption arc for Deepak. We have seen Neeraj's kind in numerous films by A.R. Murugadoss and Shankar. We've seen the naivety and nobility of Deva too. Hence, it is easy to write off Kuberaa as lacking novelty, and one wouldn't be wrong to do so. But one also has the onus of explaining why the film continues to be engaging despite its predictability. The reason is the solid craftsmanship of Shekar Kammula, who creates brilliant drama despite using familiar scenarios."

Kuberaa Movie Review: A searingly humane socio-political thriller

On the surface, Sekhar Kammula's Kuberaa is a quintessential David vs Goliath story, it speaks about inequality and class divide set against a world of high-end socio-political corruption where the poor are ruthlessly used as pawns. However, the evil of inequality permeates even the boundaries between life and death in this world. In a scene early on, a beggar is denied dignity during his cremation. This moment completes a circle in the second half as our protagonist Deva (Dhanush) moves mountains to lend dignity to the death of someone like him, even as he learns the price that needs to be paid for it. Kuberaa works best when, amidst its frantic storytelling, it prioritises emotional intensity over pace. Director: Sekhar Kammula Cast: Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, Jim Sarbh, Dalip Tahil Paced at a breakneck speed, Kuberaa sprints throughout its 3-hour runtime, which is an accomplishment in itself. However, in the process, it ends up barely leaving room for emotional heft, especially in the first half. Every scene comes close to being hurried, some of them toppling over the line. There is no breather here — the narrative keeps you at the edge of your seat, even discomfortingly so at times. You want the moments to stay longer and hit you harder, but Kuberaa has lofty ambitions. It wants to tug at your heartstrings while also punching you in the gut.

Nagarjuna Akkineni on ‘Kuberaa': Overwhelmed by the response

Superstar Nagarjuna Akkineni, who has featured in the Sekhar Kammula directorial Kuberaa, said the good response for the film is an indicator of the team's relentless hard work. Starring Nagarjuna, Dhanush, Rashmika Mandanna, and Jim Sarbh among others, Kuberaa released on June 20, 2025. Nagarjuna, who portrays Deepak—a man caught in a web of powerplay and moral conflict, spoke about the praise he has received for the movie. 'I'm overwhelmed with the love coming my way for Kuberaa. Deepak will remain one of my most special characters. 'Looking at the audiences' love, the reviews, and the box office response, I am just so touched. I've been fortunate to work across Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films and to get this love today, even after four decades of my career, is truly humbling. I'm proud of what team Kuberaa pulled off, and I am thankful to the entire cast and crew,' the actor said in a statement. The movie, produced by Sree Venkateswara LLP and Amigo Creations, has earned ₹13 crore at the box office on the opening day, according to the portal The Telugu version had an occupancy of 57.36 per cent on Day 1. The Hindu review of the film said, 'The film begins by acknowledging its writer-director's 25-year career, and the title card — Sekhar Kammula's Kuberaa —says it all. Kuberaa is driven by its director and his ambitious tale that does not pander to the starry aura of Dhanush, Nagarjuna Akkineni, and Rashmika Mandanna. 'Sekhar makes them play characters — men and women inhabiting a complex world driven by money, power and greed. The narrative is not perfect. Yet, it is a brave one in the realm of mainstream Telugu cinema, giving viewers plenty to chew on.'
