Non-veg breakfast removed from Chennai Vande Bharat trains
CHENNAI: Commuters travelling on Vande Bharat Express trains from Chennai to Nagercoil, Mysuru, Bengaluru and Tirunelveli have expressed outrage after discovering that non-vegetarian breakfast options are no longer available, despite no prior notice from Southern Railway or the catering agency.
Passengers booking tickets on the IRCTC app are now greeted with a popup stating, 'Non-veg option is applicable for Lunch and Dinner only' after they enter their personal details and select food preferences.
Southern Railway general manager R N Singh did not respond to queries, but other officials said it was a technical glitch in the IRCTC app and that non-veg options should be available during booking. However, commuters say the reality on board is different.
David Manohar, who travelled on the Chennai-Nagercoil Vande Bharat Express on Friday, said, 'We saw the pop-up while booking but proceeded anyway. Onboard, we were served only vegetarian food. When I raised the issue with IRCTC on X, they responded saying non-veg option is unavailable only for evening tea. But the post was later deleted.' 'It's my right to choose between veg and non-veg meals. IRCTC cannot restrict that without informing passengers,' he added.
IRCTC, the public sector unit responsible for catering on premium trains, has yet to issue an official clarification. The trains include meals in their fare, but passengers are increasingly dissatisfied with the quality.
'During the launch, they gave feedback forms. Now, even if we complain, there's no response,' said N Muralidharan, a frequent traveller between Chennai and Tirunelveli. 'The dal is watery, roti is too hard for elderly passengers and rice portions are too small. We're left with no satisfying meal option.'
A L Selvam, another commuter on the Chennai-Tirunelveli route, said the menu leans heavily on north Indian dishes. 'The taste doesn't suit us. Many passengers just leave the food untouched.'

The Ministry of Railways has released the official timetable for the newly launched Vande Bharat Express train services between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. This initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing rail connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir. The semi-high-speed trains stop at limited stations, i.e., Jammu Tawi, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Banihal, and Srinagar. The ministry has issued a notification stating two pairs of Vande Bharat trains, numbered 26401/02 and 26403/04, have been approved to run on this route. Jammu - Srinagar Vande Bharat Express train timings These trains will operate six days a week, with one day reserved for maintenance. Train number 26402 will leave Srinagar at 2:00 PM and reach Jammu Tawi at 6:50 PM, except on Tuesdays. Meanwhile, train 26404 will depart from Srinagar at 8:00 AM and arrive in Jammu Tawi at 12:40 PM, not running on Wednesdays. In the opposite direction, train number 26401 will depart from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reach Srinagar at 11:10 AM, except on Tuesdays. Train 26403 will leave Jammu Tawi at 1:20 PM and reach Srinagar at 6:00 PM, skipping operations on Wednesdays. The new train service is expected to boost tourism, business, and daily commuting in the region by reducing the travel time between Katra and Srinagar while offering passengers a more comfortable and efficient journey. The launch of this service is part of a broader effort to modernise rail infrastructure in the Union Territory. Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express train inauguration Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new Vande Bharat services during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir on June 6. He will also commission two landmark projects: the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab River and India's first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji. The completion of the 272-kilometre Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) through mountainous terrain is another major achievement. It features 36 tunnels with a combined length of 119 kilometres and 943 bridges, and was constructed at a cost of ₹43,780 crore. In February 2024, a 48-kilometre segment from Banihal to Sangaldan—via Khari and Sumber—was commissioned, along with the electrification of the 185.66-kilometre Baramulla–Srinagar–Banihal–Sangaldan section. This included the launch of the first electric train service in the Valley. Final safety checks for the 111-kilometre Banihal–Katra section began in January 2025. This segment comprises 97 kilometres of tunnels and four major bridges spanning a total of seven kilometres. Jammu Railway Station redevelopment Additionally, Jammu Railway Station is undergoing a major redevelopment, with eight platforms and modern passenger amenities in the works. Indian Railways also inaugurated a new Jammu Railway Division in January 2025, carved out from the Ferozepur Division under Northern Railway. The division, headquartered in Jammu, will serve the regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Punjab. The newly formed division comprises 11 freight terminals, designed to facilitate the transportation of goods such as food grains, cement, coal, fuel, and perishable items across the region.

Kashmir to get two Vande Bharat trains; PM Modi to open key bridges
For the first time, the Kashmir Valley will get connected to the rest of the country, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to inaugurate Vande Bharat train services between Katra (Jammu) and Srinagar on Friday, along with the larger Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. These trains will begin formal operations on Saturday and will operate six days a week, enhancing connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the prominent pilgrimage destination Vaishno Devi. The two Vande Bharats—train numbers 26404/26403 and 26401/26402—will run on the Srinagar–Katra–Srinagar route with intermediate stops at Banihal. The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link, which has been among the key promises of Modi, stretches 272 kilometres through the rugged Himalayas. The entire project, which had been in the works for decades, has been completed at a cost of ₹43,780 crore, according to the railways. It includes 36 tunnels spanning 119 kilometres and 943 bridges that knit together valleys, ridges and mountain passes. Designed to overcome the region's challenging geography, it connects remote areas to the national rail network. 'To maximise the impact of this connectivity, the Vande Bharat Express is being introduced between Jammu and Srinagar. Unlike other trains of its kind, this one is tailored for the harsh Himalayan winters. It runs smoothly even in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. Heated windshields, advanced heating systems and insulated toilets ensure that the train remains operational and comfortable throughout the year,' said the Ministry of Railways. A snow removal train will move ahead of the Vande Bharats to clear the tracks for all-weather service. Seismic dampers have also been installed to absorb tremors, offering a safer and smoother journey in this high-risk zone, said the railways.
