Hindi Vs Kannada row: The non-Kannadiga State Bank Of India (SBI) manager, who recently made the headlines after a video showed her allegedly refusing to speak Kannada with a customer, has now issued an apology in Kannada for 'hurting sentiments'.
In response to the backlash received after triggering a major 'language debate' on social media, the lady manager issued an apology saying that she would try to converse in Kannada.
In the video being widely circulated on social media platforms, the official repeats in Kannada, 'Whoever got hurt because of me, I'm sorry. I will try to converse in Kannada," as she is coached, presumably by her colleagues, on what to say.

The separate video of her apologising has emerged after the official in question was reportedly transferred by the SBI. The new video was shared by multiple handles on social media platform X, with several comments following each of it.

A branch manager of an SBI Bank in Bengaluru Rural's Chandapura was harassed after she refused to speak in Kannada, as a customer kept insisting and reminding her that 'this is Karnataka".
In the video, the customer kept asking the bank official to speak in Kannada as she was working in a bank in Karnataka, however, the bank employee insisted on using Hindi as she lives in India. The argument between the two went on for a few minutes, leading a disagreement.

This sparked outrage on social media with several users claiming that individuals can speak any language they want, while several termed the bank employee rude as she refused to speak in Kannada.
The incident attracted widespread criticism on social media, following which Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the incident and informed that the official has been transferred by the bank.

New insecticide labelling rules: QR codes, safety symbols mandatory; ban on non-compliant products
New Delhi: In a move aimed at improving traceability, consumer awareness, and environmental safety, the Centre has notified new labelling rules for insecticide packaging, making quick response (QR) codes, safety pictograms or symbols, and detailed usage instructions mandatory across all sizes of insecticide packs. The new rules, notified on 5 June, amend the Insecticides Rules, 1971, and will come into force from the date of publication in the official gazette. This assumes significance as nearly 2.75% of pesticide samples tested across the country in FY24 were found to be substandard or spurious. Of the 80,789 samples analysed, 2,222 failed to meet the prescribed standards, according to data shared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare. As per the Insecticides (First Amendment) Rules, 2025, insecticide labels must now be printed only in Hindi and English and contain a wide range of information—from brand names and usage categories to toxicity symptoms and customer care contacts. The QR code on each pack will carry unique product and batch-level data, including links to full label and leaflet information, it said. The amendment allows six months for companies to shift to the new labelling format. Insecticides that do not meet the revised specifications will be barred from sale, distribution, or stocking after 30 months from the date of notification. However, the rules include a provision for submitting suggestions or objections within the next 30 days. The new provisions apply to all insecticide packages, classified into three categories based on net content: ultra-small (1–50 gm/ml), small (51–250 gm/ml), and big (above 250 gm/ml). Labels must follow uniform standards with prescribed font sizes, safety icons, and warnings against misuse, including proper disposal methods. In addition to printed leaflets, large packs sold across states must carry instructions in regional languages. All insecticide labels must prominently display warnings such as 'read leaflet before use,' and mention the re-entry interval after application, approved by the registration committee. The inclusion of QR codes is meant to ensure end-users—particularly farmers—can verify product authenticity and access full usage instructions using their smartphones. The QR codes must link to the manufacturer's website and include manufacturing and expiry dates, batch numbers, and product identifiers. For ultra-small and small packs, a secondary package must also display the full label information unless the primary pack already complies with the new rule. Pictograms indicating toxicity and environmental risk will be mandatory at the bottom of every label, scaled according to the pack size. Industry experts see the rule change as a significant shift toward safer and more accountable agrochemical practices. 'For too long, substandard or counterfeit labels have posed risks not only to farmers but also to consumers and the environment. Digital traceability could be a game-changer,' said Kalyan Goswami, director general of the Agro Chem Federation of India (ACFI), a body representing India's agrochemical sector. India's pesticide market, valued at ₹ 26,000 crore in 2024, is projected to grow to about ₹ 44,010 core by 2033, according to market researcher and consultancy IMARC Group. The expansion is being fuelled by rising food production needs and greater demand for crop protection against pests and diseases.

Surat DEO issues notices to schools for fee relief to children of diamond polishers
The Surat District Education Office (DEO) on Thursday issued notifications to all schools where children of diamond polishers study and shared a School Fees Special Assistance Application form along with a checklist of relevant documents for students and parents who are eligible for a fee relief. The state government has announced a special assistance package for people from the diamond industry, considering the recession over the last three years. Children of diamond polishers, who have been unemployed after March 2024 and are aged above 21 and have worked for at least three years at a diamond firm, will be eligible for this scheme. Surat district Education Officer Bhagirathsinh Parmar issued the notification after receiving the format from the state government. According to the format, the benefits of the scheme can be availed only for the 2025-26 session, the maximum amount of relief being Rs 13,500 per student. Diamond polisher parents should fill the School Fees Special Assistance Application form and submit it, along with necessary documents, including Aadhaar cards of both the applicant and the student, a passport-size photo of the parent, to the school between June 9 and July 23. The applicant should obtain a certificate of unemployment for a period of one year and a certificate of work experience for the previous three years from the District Employment Office, the District Industries Centre, or a request letter or certificate issued by the Surat Diamond Association. The school authorities would then submit the documents to the District Industries Centre in three phases — on June 30, July 7, and July 24. The school authorities should also attach a forwarding letter, along with a list of students, a cancelled cheque from the school, and fees in accordance with the Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC). DEO Parmar said, 'We have issued the notification to all primary, secondary and higher secondary grant-in-aid, self-finance and government schools in the city. Diamond polishers mainly reside in Varachha, Kapodara, Punagam, Katargam, Sarthana, etc. Non-Gujarati polishers who match all the eligibility criteria can also fill such forms. We have strictly instructed all schools to complete the process with the given time frame. We are coordinating with the Surat Diamond Association, the Surat District Employment Office, and the District Industries Centre, and will make sure that diamond polishers should not face any problem in obtaining the necessary documents. If they do, they should contact us or any of these three offices, and their issue will be resolved.'

MFI stress to remain steady in coming quarters: RBI's DG Swaminathan
Stress in the microfinance portfolio is expected to stabilise over the next couple of quarters, Swaminathan J, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), said on Friday during the post-monetary policy press meet. Meanwhile, RBI on Friday relaxed the qualifying criteria for Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs) to be classified as Microfinance Institutions (MFIs). Under the revised criteria, NBFCs will have to maintain 60 per cent of their assets in the microfinance loan portfolio instead of the earlier 75 per cent. 'The entities predominantly in this segment have already identified, recalibrated their business models, and stepped up their collection methodologies. We have also seen a shrinkage of that portfolio due to this recalibration,' Swaminathan said, referring to MFIs. 'So, maybe over a period of time, over the next couple of quarters, this should stabilise,' he added, cautioning that much will depend on overall economic conditions and income levels, as MFI portfolios remain the most vulnerable segment. 'Q1 (FY26) is likely to see a peak in slippages. The various guardrails put in place by MFIN and Sa-Dhan are expected to benefit the sector in the long run. However, they will cause some short-term pain, which was necessary to clean the system. By Q2 or Q3, slippages should start to moderate. The only caveat is that MFI growth this year is expected to remain muted due to asset quality challenges coupled with slower growth,' said an official from a private bank. According to the CRIF High Mark report, the gross loan portfolio of NBFC-MFIs shrank by 18.2 per cent year-on-year to ₹1.8 trillion at the end of 31 March 2025. Experts said RBI's move to relax the qualifying criteria for NBFCs to be classified as MFIs will allow these companies to diversify into secured assets and continue growth, especially as self-regulatory organisations (SROs) tighten guardrails on the MFI portfolio. 'Reduction in the qualifying asset criteria for NBFC-MFIs shall improve their loan diversification, thereby augmenting their credit risk profile, and shall enable them to meet other credit requirements of their end borrowers,' said A M Karthik, Senior Vice President, ICRA. Ganesh Narayanan, CEO, CreditAccess Grameen, said, 'This policy shift will enable accelerated diversification within our operations, ensuring balance sheet stability and positioning us for robust cross-cycle earnings. The RBI has time and again introduced progressive measures that support the growth of the microfinance sector, creating a more inclusive ecosystem.'
