An Air India flight bound for London from Gujarat's Ahmedabad crashed minutes after take-off on Thursday (June 12) afternoon. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft with 242 people on board, including two pilots and 10 cabin crew, came down in a residential area near the Ahmedabad airport.
Visuals show a heavy black smoke billowing from the accident site. The police have confirmed that all those on the ill-fated Air India plane have died.

The AI-171 flight was on its way to London's Gatwick Airport before the plane crashed into residential quarters of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar.

According to the Indian aviation safety regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the pilot of the Air India aircraft gave a Mayday call to the Ahmedabad air traffic controller (ATC). However, there was no response later when ATC tried to get in touch.
'As per ATC (air traffic control), aircraft departed from Ahmadabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It gave a MAYDAY Call to ATC, but thereafter, no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC. Aircraft, immediately after departure from Runway 23, fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter. Heavy black smoke was seen coming from the accident site,' said a senior official with the DGCA.
The crash took place around 2 pm. The last signal from the plane was received when it was at an altitude of 625 feet, BBC reported, citing Flight Radar. It then descended at a vertical speed of 475 feet per minute.
This is the first-ever crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft globally.
Eyewitnesses said that the plane caused severe damage to buildings as it crashed into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College. They also claim that several people at the doctors' accommodation suffered injuries.

'There are several five-floor buildings which serve as residential quarters. Many people in those apartments were injured as the buildings also caught fire,' Haresh Shah, an eyewitness, told PTI.

Another eyewitness said several vehicles parked on the premises also caught fire.
Photos and videos show the aircraft debris on fire, with thick black smoke rising into the sky near the airport.

Rescue operations are underway. Six teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been pressed into service.
Two BSF teams and 100 personnel of CRPF Rapid Action Force are on their way to the accident site to carry out relief and rescue operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the tragedy 'heartbreaking beyond words'. He wrote on X, 'In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it.
'Have been in touch with ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected.'

Tributes have also poured in from around the world. United Kingdom PM Keir Starmer said his thoughts were with the passengers and families of those on the Air India flight.

The Air India flight had 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, a Canadian national and seven Portuguese nationals on board, as per the airline.

Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu is reaching Ahmedabad to monitor rescue and relief operations. The director general of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and other top officials are also set to arrive in the city.
AAIB will investigate the Air India plane crash, an official told PTI.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash Live Updates: The bodies of the 274 victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash, who have been identified, are set to be handed over to their families by the Gujarat government on Sunday, sources said. Nearly 600 doctors, assistants and drivers have been roped in to hand over the bodies, identified through DNA testing, outside Ahmedabad civil hospital, the sources added. On Thursday, at least 274 people were killed in one of India's deadliest plane crashes involving a London-bound Air India flight. AI 171 - belonging to Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 fleet - crashed seconds after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Officials said the aircraft lost altitude soon after taking off at around 1.30 pm. It crashed into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College before going up in flames, sending plumes of thick black smoke spiralling up in the air. The pilot had issued a 'Mayday' distress call, denoting a full emergency, soon after takeoff, the Air Traffic Control at Ahmedabad said. Sources said the casualties include the passengers and crew on board AI 171, and local residents on ground. 1st Responder Was Having Lunch At Hostel Where Air India Plane Crashed In Ahmedabad 108 Ambulance driver Satinder Singh Sandhu was having lunch when he heard a loud explosion. One look outside one of the hostels of the BJ Medical College campus and he saw the makings of a great tragedy - thick black smoke and chaos. His phone rang and he rushed to the place where the smoke was emanating from to find an aircraft crashed and on fire. The first person Mr Sandhu saw emerging from the crash site was a heavily burnt security guard. He told NDTV that he also saw the lone survivor of the crashed AI171 aircraft walking from the plane and then attempting to go back to save his relative on board. Unfortunately, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh's relative was among the 241 on board that died in Thursday's crash. The ambulance driver then rushed Mr Ramesh to the hospital, where he underwent treatment. Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Priyanka Gandhi Calls For Corrective Measures Congress general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday said that once the reason for the Ahmedabad plane crash is found, corrective measures need to be taken to protect lives in the future. "We should be united in our grief and provide as much solidarity as we can to the families of the passengers and others, including medical students, who lost their lives in the incident. It is a moment where we need to stand together and just provide solidarity," she said. The Congress MP further said that it was also important to find "what went wrong". "It is being investigated. I am sure the investigating agencies will in the next few days enlighten the nation as to what happened. Then in the future, whatever corrective measures need to be taken, will be taken to protect people and lives," she said.

The call was received at air traffic control (ATC) mere seconds before all communications stopped. High-ranking officials stated that the jet was close to finishing the 3.5km runway of the airport, which typically requires 2.5km to 3km for a wide-bodied jet. 'The longer runway roll hints at a possibility of the aircraft not having adequate thrust for take-off,' the report quoted a person aware of the development. 'The facts can be ascertained only after the black box is decoded,' it added. The report stated that no warnings were raised earlier. "There were no requests for runway changes, thrust adjustments or flap reconfigurations. Weather was stable, visibility was clear. Temperature was high, but within operational limits," it quoted a person aware of the development. As per the CCTV footage of the airport, an extended take-off was observed, while no visual or radar anomalies were seen. No engine issues or pitch inconsistencies were observed by ATC or ground staff. All communication and safety protocols were followed, the report added. Officials are currently waiting for the flight data and cockpit voice recorders to determine what led to the tragic crash.
