4x100m mixed relay to feature at Indian Open Relay Competition
More than 300 elite athletes from across the country will compete in the second edition of the Indian Open Relay Competition in Chandigarh on Wednesday.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has also introduced a 4x100 mixed event for both senior and junior (U20) groups.
Following the introduction of the 4x100m mixed relay event in major competitions from this year by World Athletics, the International Olympic Committee has also added mixed 4x100m relay at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics programme.
As per entries, there will be as many as nine teams contesting for podium in the senior 4x100m mixed relay event in Chandigarh.

Some of those who have been selected for the May 27-31 Asian Championships in South Korea as well as for the World Relays (May 10-11) are also taking part in the event.
Odisha, Punjab and Tamil Nadu are among strong contenders in the senior 4x100m mixed relay event..
Odisha's star women sprinter Srabani Nanda, and Lalu Prasad Bhoi and Mrutyam Jayaram Dondapati in the men's group have confirmed their entries.
Tamil Nadu's dependable quarter-miler Vithya Ramraj will also be seen in action. She will compete in women's 4x400m and mixed 4x400m relays..
The morning session will feature four finals, while the remaining eight finals are scheduled for the evening session.

Shiny Wilson bids farewell to FCI
Shiny Wilson, who was the first woman flag bearer at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and the first Indian woman athlete to reach the women's 800 m semifinals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, retired from service after four decades. The four-time Olympian was serving as general manager Food Corporation of India (FCI) located in Nungambakkam. The farewell function was an emotional event for Shiny. It was attended by Ashutosh Agnihotri, chairman and managing director FCI; and Jacintha Lazarus, executive director (south), FCI. Her husband, Wilson Cherian, an international swimmer, who retired from ICF after 43 years of service, was also present. Known for her simplicity and reticent nature, Shiny was held in high esteem at FCI, and her farewell function proved why she is a respected personality. At her acceptance speech, Shiny recalled her childhood days and her Olympics experience. Shiny has taken part in three Asian Games, six Asian championships and seven SAF Games. She reminisced about her 41 years and three months of service in FCI. 'I am thankful to have put a long and satisfying service at FCI,' she said while praising FCI's sports scholarship given to sportspersons and its consistency in recruiting sportspersons. Shiny's love, passion and commitment to athletics is astonishing. After a few months after giving birth to her first daughter in October 1990, she started to train in Bengaluru. 'When my daughter was nine months old, I became a National champion in 800m and within a year, I won the Asian championships 400m gold and 800m silver,' said Shiny, a resident of Gill Nagar in Choolaimedu. Shiny came to Chennai from Kerala in 1992-93 and went to represent Tamil Nadu in numerous National competitions. After she joined FCI in 1984, she was one of those instrumental in fast-tracking the scholarships initiative of the organisation that has still today helped promising sportspersons get the much-needed stipend. Shiny continued to perform and shine in global and Asian events while being an employee of FCI. So much so that she even used to take part in all athletics events organised by FCI at the peak of her athletic prowess. With her time at FCI coming to an end, Shiny will definitely enjoy her free time while putting her heart and soul into her many roles which includes selector of the Indian team and a nominated member of the Asian Athletic Commission.

Asian champion 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji leads India's 6-gold show in Taiwan Open
The 25-year-old Yarraji had won gold in the Asian Championships in South Korea on May 29 with a time of 12.96 seconds. Her national record stands at 12.78 seconds. National record holder Yarraji clocked 12.99 seconds to pocket the gold at the Taipei Municipal Stadium, ahead of Japanese runners Asuka Terada (13.04 seconds) and Chisato Kiyoyama (13.10 seconds), who took the silver and bronze respectively. The Indian team of Sudheeksha Vadluri, Sneha Sathyanarayana Shanuvalli, Abinaya Rajarajan and Nithya Gandhe won gold in the women's 4x100m relay, clocking 44.06 seconds. The national record in this event stands at 43.37 seconds clocked by the quartet of Archana S, Dhanalakshmi, Hima Das and Dutee Chand in 2021. Abdulla Aboobacker and Pooja also won gold in the men's triple jump and women's 1500m respectively. Aboobacker jumped 16.21m, well below his personal best of 17.19m. Pooja, who had won a silver in the Asian Championships in South Korea last month, clocked 4 minutes, 11.63 seconds to win the gold. She has a personal best of 4:09.52 which she had clocked in 2023. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju inaugurates residential wing of Weightlifting Warriors Academy
Modi Nagar (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 7 (ANI): Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday inaugurated the residential wing of the Weightlifting Warriors Academy, the centre where Olympic Silver Medalist Mirabai Chanu trains, marking a significant milestone in India's Olympic preparations for 2036. The state-of-the-art facility, established by Chief National Coach Vijay Sharma in September 2024, will now provide accommodation for up to 60 athletes in 30 fully equipped rooms. Currently, 40 young athletes aged 8-14 years and 15 elite athletes are also training at the academy. Speaking at the inauguration, Rijiju congratulated the team and expressed his confidence in the academy. 'I would like to congratulate the team at Weightlifting Warriors that the residential centre has opened. I am not just wishing you all good luck, but I have faith that a great champion will emerge from here. I have seen a lot of academies in my life... but the way Vijay has run this academy with dedication, and the way they work hard to make it a success. I have never seen that anywhere else,' he said, as quoted from a press release by Weightlifting Warriors. Olympic Silver Medalist Mirabai Chanu, who trains at the academy, expressed her commitment to mentoring the next generation and said, 'The 2036 Olympics is not just a dream for us, it is a commitment for our country.
