SPF Tints & Sheer Everything: The Ultimate Summer Swap for a Makeup Detox

SPF Tints & Sheer Everything: The Ultimate Summer Swap for a Makeup Detox

Vogue Arabia5 days ago

Summer has officially entered the chat—and if you live in Dubai, you know what that means. The moment you step outside, your makeup starts to melt. Your full-coverage foundation? It doesn't stand a chance against the city's intense humidity. The Dubai sun doesn't mess around, and neither should your beauty routine. This summer, a makeup detox is essential—build a routine that has a skin-first approach. Your makeup can deliver an effortless, radiant glow, all while allowing your skin to breathe—the two aspects aren't mutually exclusive. And newsflash: real skin has texture, blemishes, freckles, and all the perfectly imperfect things that make us human. This season, let your makeup enhance—not hide—your natural beauty. Aim to amplify your glow, not erase your individuality.
Besides the aesthetically natural appeal, lightweight makeup works better in summer because it prevents your pores from clogging in the heat. How does that work? The rise in temperatures can cause your sebaceous glands to produce more oil—combine this with heavily formulated products and you have blocked pores plus comedonal acne (blackheads and whiteheads) on your hands. In addition to that, thick layers have a tendency to interfere with your skin's natural cooling mechanism through perspiration—lightweight makeup will allow your skin to thermoregulate. Don't know where to begin and what to replace? Let us help you build a simple makeup routine with products that carry skincare benefits.
Dewy sunscreens
Sun protection is non-negotiable, especially if you live in the UAE. Thanks to the new-age beauty brands, we have sunscreens that have evolved beyond the thick, chalky formulas of the past and don't even leave behind a visible white cast. If you struggle with dry skin, stick to cream-based formulas. For those with oily and acne-prone skin, gel is your safest bet. Sticks and mists are only recommended for targeted application or reapplication. Brands like Kosas, with their DreamBeam formula, or Ultra Violette's Queen Screen SPF 50+ Luminizing Skinscreen, all focus on protecting your skin while giving it an illuminating glow.
SPF-infused skin tints
If the thought of wearing a heavy foundation in summer doesn't make your skin crawl, you're yet to experience the GCC sun in full throttle. Recently, the full-coverage foundations with an opaque appearance have taken a back seat, allowing skin tints to have a moment in the sun (see what we did there?). SPF-infused skin tints are the ultimate summer multitasker, offering lightweight coverage with built-in sun protection. These formulas even out your complexion without the weight or potential for creasing that comes with traditional foundation. They're perfect for the UAE's climate because they offer protection while letting your natural skin show through. Hourglass, Urban Decay, Milk Makeup and Anastasia Beverly Hills have mastered this category with formulas that adapt to your skin tone seamlessly.
Cream blushes
Powder blushes have their own appeal, but during summer they tend to settle into your pores, fade faster and leave a blotchy finish (as opposed to the sun-kissed flush you were going for). Cream-based blushes are the summer holy grail that blend seamlessly into your skin and are less likely to fade or crack in the heat. Try ILIA's Multi-Stick or Milk Makeup's Cooling Water Jelly Tint, which has a sheer effect and can be used as a lip and cheek stain.
Tanning drops
We all love a good tan, but why risk sun damage when you can create the bronze goddess vibe with equally efficient and natural-looking products? Tanning drops or lotions are perfect to get that ideal olive shade in an even way. Whind's Instant Glow Tinting Water offers this bronze boost while keeping skin hydrated and shimmering throughout the day.
Lip oils
Heavy matte lipsticks need to be packed away for summer—no one wants stark pigment with a cracked texture. Lip oils, on the other hand, have emerged as the perfect alternative for gentle lip care, offering a balanced blend of colour, shine, and nourishment. Whether you're in a dry, air-conditioned space or braving the outdoor heat, lip oils help maintain hydration, support the skin barrier with ceramides, and keep your lips feeling soft. Unlike some glosses, which can be sticky or irritating, lip oils are typically more skin-friendly and formulated to align with your lips' natural pH.

Why Red Lipstick Will Always Be My Power Colour

A bright, blue-toned red lipstick has been my signature for the last fourteen years. I found my first in a serendipitous encounter at a M.A.C Cosmetics store. I walked in with no specific agenda, a sales assistant pulled out a few colours for me, including one called 'M.A.C Red' (nope, not Ruby Woo), I saw what it looked like against my fair skin and was instantly intimidated, wondering if it was too promiscuous a shade for a sixteen-year-old. A woman shopping alongside saw it on me and instantly said, 'If I was you, I would buy that. It looks amazing.' I did, and I've never looked back. While teenagers today experiment with beauty and truly own their choices, that wasn't necessarily the case in 2012. It took a few wears for me to get over the self-judgment and really embrace the fact that beneath the doubt, it made me feel fantastic and like a more confident version of myself. Little did I know that three years later, I would dive into a career in the beauty editorial space, and that my red lipstick would become a defining part of my personality, at and outside of work, eventually leading to the launch of my Instagram community called The Red Lipstick Club. Red lipstick: Cultural significance Red lipstick has been a symbol of oppression, wealth, power, seduction and even witchcraft over time. Historians believe that the Egyptians were some of the first creators and users of red lipstick, one made from crushing insects, for Cleopatra. During World War II, women were specifically told to avoid wearing red lipstick, and they went on to swipe it as an act of rebellion. In 1912, during the suffragettes movement in America, protestors wore red and Elizabeth Arden handed out free tubes of red lipstick to women marching along Fifth Avenue in New York City. Marilyn Monroe always had her signature red lip on, Grace Kelly loved her Rouge Dior 999 since the mid 1950s, Madonna wore M.A.C's Russian Red all through her iconic 'Blond Ambition' tour in 1990, and Taylor Swift often has a red pout on (Nars' Dragon Girl is said to be her go-to). Safe to say, red has always been, and continues to be, in vogue. How to find the perfect red lipstick Finding a red that feels true to you definitely takes some experimenting. We got Bianca Louzado, a Mumbai-based celebrity and bridal makeup artist to share her take on doing it right. 'I think the perfect red lipstick announces your identity, attitude and emotions, all in one swipe. The secret to knowing and wearing the right kind of red lies in understanding your skin's undertone. If you have a cool undertone such as pink, red, or bluish hints, invest in blue-based reds like cherry hues or a classic ruby palette. Warm undertones are skin with golden, yellow, olive, or peach hints, making orange-based reds like tomato or brick tones your perfect pick. If you have a neutral undertone where warm and cool are balanced, most reds will suit you.' If you're someone who enjoys creating custom shades, she recommends having a tiny collection of assorted reds, to mix and match shades and thereby achieve your perfect red. There truly is a red for everyone, no matter your skin tone. All it takes is some trial and error, and a small dose of confidence to wear it outdoors. You'll feel the difference and wonder why you never wore the power colour in the first place — I know I did, and will continue to swipe it on till kingdom come. Meet the Saudi Entrepreneur Turning Taif's Roses into Luxury Products

The damascene rose is a natural treasure bestowed by God upon the city of Taif, bringing hope and love to its inhabitants. They're beautiful in appearance, exquisite in scent, elegant in presence and their reputation precedes them. They live in the peaks and are nourished by the sky. In Taif, roses mean hospitality. They represent a combination of tenderness and toughness. There are tales of women in Taif who continued to tend to their husbands' rose farms out of loyalty after they passed away. They symbolise life renewed; when picked, a new bud appears in its place. Taif's rose industry is steeped in the city's cultural and social fabric. The first damascene rose was planted in Taif 300 years ago and the Taif rose industry has been around as long as modern-day Saudi Arabia. In December 2024, UNESCO included all practices related to the Taif rose in its list of intangible cultural heritage. With a practice so deeply rooted in Taif tradition, it was paramount to me, as Wardat's founder, that we retained its authenticity at all costs. So far we have had a beautiful journey – from increasing the number of Taif rose products on the market to offering Taif rose farm tours and experiences, and creating rose-related content. This delicate flower, which is often known as the 'shy rose', has opened so many doors for me – and not just economically. It has introduced me to the social, cultural and religious heritage of my city. The demand for our Taif roses is huge, far surpassing the city's capacity supply. At Wardat, customers often reserve our roses in December, ahead of the harvest season in April, and our client list includes sheikhs from GCC countries. Taif rose oil is considered one of the most expensive perfumes in the world – the price of 1 tola (the equivalent of 12ml) costs over SAR 2,000. For this reason, it is called 'the royal perfume' and is one of the most highly coveted natural products in the world. Photo: Fahad Al Shanbari shot near Jabal Cafe, Taif

Can Skincare Actually Stimulate Collagen Production?

'Ingredients like retinol, vitamin C and peptides are well-known for this,' he explains. 'Retinol speeds up cell turnover and encourages the production of new collagen, while vitamin C is essential in the collagen-making process. These ingredients work by gently pushing your skin into repair mode, which helps strengthen its deeper layers,' Dr Galadari adds. That said, he also stresses the importance of formulation, as the result largely depends on 'whether these ingredients actually reach the dermis, where collagen is made.' Elsewhere, Dr Hall explains that while some products list 'collagen' as ingredients, the science behind it is far less straightforward than you'd think. 'You would automatically think that by applying collagen your collagen levels will be automatically increased. But in fact, the size of a collagen molecule itself is too large to be absorbed,' she shares. However, Dr Hall also points out that 'collagen has humectant properties like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, meaning that it attracts water and is a very strong hydrating ingredient.' How does topical skincare compare to in-office procedures in terms of stimulating collagen? 'They work on very different levels. Topicals are great for prevention and long-term maintenance, and they tend to support skin health in a gentler, more holistic way,' says Dr Hall. 'Topical skincare should form the foundation of any skincare or anti-aging programme. It is by far the most cost-effective way of slowing down the signs of aging and a good skincare routine really will make a considerable difference,' she adds. According to Dr Hall, 'in-office procedures like microneedling and CO2 lasers go deeper and actively induce controlled injury or inflammation to trigger a more robust collagen production response. Your body recognises the injury and puts itself into repair mode creating more collagen than you started with.' As far as collagen-boosting injectables go, Dr Hall recommends trying 'polynucleotides and Poly-L-Lactic-Acid (PLLA) like Julaine which are biostimulants.' For a more dramatic result, Dr Galadari also mentioned the Morpheus8 treatment, which is 'a combination of microneedling and radiofrequency that reaches the deeper layers of the skin, triggering a strong collagen renewal process.' 'It's particularly effective for skin tightening, smoothing fine lines, and improving skin texture - things topicals alone often can't deliver on their own,' he adds. Collagen supplements vs. collagen-boosting skincare – which is better? 'They actually complement each other really well,' shares Dr Galadari. 'While skincare focuses on stimulating collagen in the top layers of skin, supplements work from the inside out. These usually contain hydrolysed collagen peptides that your body can absorb and use to support skin structure,' he explains.
