Edinburgh Rubiks cube prodigies face off at Scottish championship held in capital

Over 200 Rubik's Cube solvers from across Scotland and beyond will descend on Edinburgh this May for the Kewbz Scottish Championship 2025 — set to be the biggest speedcubing competition ever held in Scotland, and one of the largest in Europe this year.
Taking place from Friday, May 20 to Sunday, June 1 at Meadowbank Stadium, the event will see competitors from over 20 countries attempt to solve the famous Rubik's Cube — as well as a range of other events from blindfolded to one handed — in the shortest possible time.
The competition, which is the first ever Scottish Championship to be held, is hosted by the UK Cube Association, with its results officially recognised by the World Cube Association (WCA), the international governing body for speedcubing.
'Speedcubing has exploded in popularity in recent years,' said Adam Leyton, one of the event organisers from the UKCA.
People often think of the Rubik's Cube as a retro toy from the 1980s, but it's actually now more popular than ever. It's fantastic that we have the opportunity to host such a high-profile competition right here in Edinburgh.'
All eyes are on 13-year-old prodigy Johnny Morello Kerlaff from Edinburgh as he heads into this year's prestigious 3x3 event, where he's one of the leading contenders.
A rising star in the cubing scene, Johnny currently holds the Scottish record for the fastest solve time, clocking in at a speedy 5.41 seconds.
In 2024, Johnny made a strong impression at the UK Championship, finishing in third place and earning recognition as one of the country's most promising young cubers.
Now he'll be aiming to build on that success at this year's Scottish Championship, hoping to deliver another memorable performance.
Also among the standout names competing in Edinburgh will be Lanarkshire cuber Ryan Eckersley, who currently holds multiple European Records in the blindfolded solving category and placed second at the 2024 European Championships.
Ryan said: "Competing at such a major event in my home country is something really special to me.
"There's going to be some serious competition but I've been putting in a lot of practice lately and I'm really excited to see how I perform.'

He scored 18 goals in 37 Scottish Premiership appearances as the Hoops retained the league title in Brendan Rodgers' first season back as manager. O'Riley had been a revelation at Celtic Park following his £1.5million switch from third tier English side MK Dons back in January 2022 under Ange Postecoglou. His performances quickly caught the attention and by the time the summer transfer window came around last year, it looked like an uphill battle for Celtic to keep the fans' favourite at Parkhead. And so it turned out, as in late August, O'Riley sealed a Scottish record £25m-plus transfer to Brighton and he signed a five-year contract. The big move began in nightmare fashion for the Denmark international. He made his debut in an EFL Cup clash against Crawley the day after completing his move but lasted just nine minutes. A horror tackle resulted in O'Riley having to undergo ankle surgery and he wasn't able to return to action until November. He made his comeback in style, netting a late winner for the Seagulls in a memorable 2-1 win over Manchester City. All in all, however, it was a frustrating season for O'Riley. He's already been linked with an exit from Brighton this summer, with unnamed clubs from England, Germany and Italy credited with an ongoing interest in him. Now, Sky Sports claim that Everton are 'keen' on signing O'Riley should Brighton be willing to let him leave. The report says that there is 'uncertainty' surrounding his future but that the Seagulls also believe O'Riley can play a significant role next season. Meanwhile, Everton have also been linked with a move for Rangers star Mohamed Diomande. The 23-year old joined the Light Blues on an initial loan deal from Danish club Nordsjaelland in January 2024, before the move was made permanent last summer. Ex-Rangers striker sparks wild celebrations with cup-winning penalty
The Northern Irish striker smashed home the winning penalty for Johnstone Burgh to beat Tranent in the final at Broadwood Stadium. Lafferty, who has three top-flight Scottish titles, a Scottish Cup and two League Cups as well as a Serie B title and a Championship winners' medal made no mistake from the spot as he lashed home the crucial spot-kick. The 37-year-old climbed off the bench to play a decisive role in the victory after Ciaran Diver equalised, following Tranent taking the lead through a Harry Girdwood header in the first half. Tranent were reduced to ten men with 13 minutes left to play as Scott Gray was shown a second yellow card. Read more: With the scores tied after 90 minutes, the final would go to penalties with Burgh perfect from the spot. Dean Brett fired his penalty over the bar with Luke Scullion saving Tranent's third penalty from Euan Bauld. Diver, Fraser Mullen, Ross Davidson and Lafferty were on target for Burgh to win the cup, and spark wild celebrations as supporters raced onto the Broadwood pitch. Lafferty said on BBC Alba after the cup victory: "You always want to get to finals, no matter what standard you are in. "When I first signed for the club, that was the first thing they said to me: 'We need to win the Scottish Cup, that is the cup we want'. "It's been a long, long time since they've been to the final, never mind winning it."
