Australia Post debuts 'next generation' post offices as parcel deliveries boom

Australia Post will be ramping up its parcel collection process by introducing a post office entirely dedicated to parcels as online shopping continues to boom.
Australia Post Parcels is a focused post office that allows customers to collect their deliveries, return and send parcels at any time.
The service, which is opening in Fitzroy in Melbourne and Waterloo in Sydney, aims to streamline parcel collection, as well as sending and returning deliveries, with the help of 24/7 self-service desks and parcel lockers, which can be accessed with a one-time entry code via the Australia Post app.
Those wishing to send or return parcels can access a vending machine stocked with packaging, stamps and other postage-related essentials, which are accessible 24/7.
There will also be six to eight Australia Post employees on-site to assist customers at the post office, with trading hours extended to support growing customer demands.
Australia Post executive general manager of retail, brand and marketing, Josh Bannister, said the new services would be a game-changer for Australians as parcel collection frequency increases.
'The number one reason why a customer visits a post office is to collect a parcel, so it's logical that we're making (Australia Post Parcels),' he told NewsWire.
'We're continuing to see the growth in parcel volumes, and this is really about moving with the customer and changing customer expectations to focus on a more seamless parcel experience.'
He said more Australians are choosing to shop online than ever before, accelerating the need for easier parcel collection.
'(Australia Post Parcel is) designed around how people use the postal network today, especially in response to the e-commerce boom,' he said.
The dedicated post offices will feature a wall of parcel lockers, which are free to use and accessible 24/7.
'We're also looking at extending trading hours for assisted lodgements, and the lodgement of a parcel will be exactly the same as our customers are used to at our full-service post offices,' Mr Bannister said.
Online shopping rates are continuing to grow across the country, with a record number of households shopping online every year.
Australia Post research found 9.8m households turned to e-commerce in 2024 – a 2.3 per cent increase from last year.
The majority of online shoppers are Millennials and Gen Z, who made up three-quarters of the demographic.
'With Aussies shopping more online than ever before, we're evolving our network to keep pace with how our customers are using postal services,' Mr Bannister said.
As part of the trial, Australia Post has opened two Australia Post Parcels services available for customers in Victoria and NSW, one in Fitzroy and Waterloo.
However, there are plans to open further dedicated parcel centres in Chadstone in Melbourne, St Leonard's in Sydney and in the Gold Coast.
There are currently no plans to open Australia Post Parcels in regional areas, instead focusing on the metro regions of the country.
'We'll be monitoring how the trial locations perform and how and when customers use them and that will help us refine leanings,' Mr Bannister said.
'What we're really doing here is we've got a focused parcel experience to make it easier and more seamless for customers collect, send and return their parcels.'

Changing the name of a suburb can make the locals feel good about where they live, but can it change property prices? The perennial question to rename a part of Highton to Queens Park to reflect its widely-recognised locality has bubbled up again when Geelong councillors Eddy and Stretch Kontelj co-signed a letter to Victorian planning minister Sonya Kilkenny requesting her support for Geelong council to commence public consultation on the locally-popular proposal. It's not the first suburb to change, with Whittington name dropped south of Townsend Rd in favour of St Albans Park as residential development progressed in the 1990s, Collendina disappearing at Ocean Grove, Newtown swallowing up working class Chilwell, and Rippleside expanded the end a bayside anomaly for North Geelong. Geelong buyers advocate Tony Slack said changing the name to Queens Park would result in higher house prices, but it won't happen overnight. 'It makes them a little bit more exclusive,' Mr Slack said. 'I couldn't see it happening overnight but in the short to medium term perhaps. Mr Slack, who was a real estate agent for 36 years, said people sought homes in that pocket for the riverside position and quality of the houses. 'Before we would be advertising in the Geelong Advertiser and would be referring to Highton/Queens Park – we always wanted to differentiate that part of Highton.' Highton's median house price of $875,000 is among the 10 most expensive in Geelong, according to PropTrack. But analysis of Cotality sales data for houses shows higher property values in the Queens Park pocket, with a $1.1m median house price. Queens Park stretches from the single-lane Queens Park Bridge connecting Newtown to the Montpellier Service Basins straddling Scenic Rd. Prices have held up better in Queens Park, with a 3.6 per cent rise over 12 months, compared to an overall 4.8 per cent decline across Highton. Though capital growth is level pegging at 25 per cent over five years, a $222,000 gain was recorded since 2020 in the Queens Park pocket, compared to $175,000 across the entire suburb. Barry Plant Geelong agent Kieron Hunter said changing the name would underline the exclusivity of the area, which has about 600 homes. 'It's a little bit in some ways like Manifold Heights. Obviously, a really small pocket, probably one of the smaller suburbs for mine and it gets that exclusivity.' Manifold Heights has recently topped the city's house prices, reaching $1.23m to overtake Newtown at $1.1m. Whitford agent Heidi Trempel said it was the reverse when Chilwell was renamed Newtown to shake off the working class heritage. Chilwell's old workers' cottages sat at the bottom of the hill, while the expensive homes were at the top in Newtown. 'The gap is closing because anywhere where there's cafes and development, like from a cafe shopping strip, that's really good for that little pocket,' Ms Trempel said. 'The younger ones, who potentially come from outside of Geelong, love the Chilwell zone.' And five bayside streets of North Geelong also increased in buyers' estimation, Ms Trempel said, when the area, widely known locally as St Helens but lined with many timber workers cottages, was renamed Rippleside. 'I grew up knowing it as North Geelong and St Helens and all of the sudden it turned into Rippleside and everyone from Melbourne thought, 'oh, Rippleside',' she said. 'There's a real mixture of properties in that little pocket and I do think Rippleside gives it that bayside feel and that's why people who want to be bayside love that Rippleside name.'

Property investors are capitalising on lower interest rates and using little-known financial tactics to dramatically increase their borrowing power – leaving competing buyers seeking a roof over their heads at a disadvantage. These sophisticated strategies were reported to be helping investors secure loans significantly larger than what standard banking criteria would typically permit. The result is an uneven playing field in an already competitive property market. It's a trend particularly noteable in Sydney, where senior mortgage broker Jonathan Preston said homes are 'no longer about shelter at all – that is long dead and buried'. 'Many wealthy borrowers who are looking to build large portfolios these days choose to acquire properties within family trusts, with the view that when they eventually become negatively geared, they can provide a letter from the accountant confirming the positive trading of the entity, and some lenders then allow the trust's loan to be excluded from servicing. 'This opens up a whole new playing field, where someone can potentially open up multiple trusts and go again and again – subject to not running out of lenders or deposits – this is the way people are generally getting to 5-plus properties in 2025,' Mr Preston said. The last time investors dominated NSW's property scene in 2015 – accounting for around 40 per cent of all property purchases at the time – Sydney's prices ballooned to eye-watering levels, eventually forcing APRA to crack down and introduce regulations to cool investment purchases. Most investors using some of the above tactics were using interest-only loans, Mr Preston noted, to limit repayments and often seek higher-yielding properties to achieve positive cash flow faster. He said there has also been a rise in borrowers who are still living with their parents who will then 'rentvest' and get into the property market before moving out, with almost a third of purchases he dealt with using this tactic. 'It makes borrowing power way higher,' he said. 'Single-income borrowing is horrible right now. Even if you make big money, good luck making enough to buy something nice in Sydney. 'Borrowing is typically capped at about five times your annual income, so if you want a $3 million property, you are going to need to earn about $600,000 or more.' He said property buyers prepared to branch out their searches had an additional advantage, adding that most property buyers in Sydney wanted a house and were only interested in the North Shore, Inner West, Northern Beaches, or in the east or south. 'I am a big believer in Western Sydney but many aren't,' he added. 'So the starting point for those houses is probably north of $2.5 million now; hence, people even buy Gosford, or similar, instead. And northwest is often considered like the North Shore these days,' he said. Mr Preston emphasised that once location preferences were established, buyers are essentially restricted to buying a unit, settling for a house in Western Sydney or beyond the city boundaries, or somehow managing to earn an annual seven-figure income — a far-fetched scenario for most Australians. 'Even those three options are challenging. For example, a nice apartment in those desired areas is generally more than $1 million.'
