Ludhiana East achieves highest wheat procurement and lifting in Punjab.
Ludhiana: Govt agencies in this district have completed their wheat procurement and almost finished lifting the crop from grain markets ahead of the May 31 deadline, with private traders emerging as top buyers alongside state-run entities, official data shows.
A May 20 report from the food, civil supplies, and consumer affairs department suggests that Ludhiana East achieved 100% procurement and lifting, amounting to 3.19 lakh metric tonnes, while Ludhiana West followed closely with 3.28 lakh MT procurement and 99.9% lifting. District food and supply controller (DFSC) for Ludhiana East, Shefali Chopra, said govt agencies had completed procurement and lifting in the East circle by May 16.
She credited "ground-level coordination" for the efficient operation and noted that Ludhiana East had topped the state's performance rankings this season — just as it did last year when it won the best procurement award for the fiscal 2023-24.
Statewide, Ludhiana East and SAS Nagar (Mohali) were the only districts to achieve 100% lifting by govt agencies as of May 20. In contrast, Amritsar recorded the lowest rate at 83.99%, highlighting uneven lifting progress across Punjab.

Private traders played a significant role in Ludhiana's overall wheat procurement this year. A district-level report dated May 16 shows that private players procured 1.68 LMT wheat, placing them among the top three procurement entities — behind Pungrain (1.81 LMT) and Markfed (1.79 LMT), and well ahead of FCI (60,120 MT), the lowest among govt agencies.
Manjot Singh, an Arhitya (commission agent) at the Khanna grain market, said the wheat season posed fewer logistical challenges than the paddy season due to the smaller volume of grain. "Procurement was done almost 20 days ago," he said, adding that local flour mill owners, acting as private traders, had bought in large volumes expecting future price increases. The figures come amid growing attention on food security, market volatility, and the shifting role of private enterprise in India's agricultural supply chain.

Asian markets rise on US-China trade optimism; Hong Kong's Hang Seng up 0.8%; oil prices slip
Asian stocks rose on Wednesday as investors cheered a new agreement between the US and China aimed at easing trade tensions. The move raised hopes that the two countries could reach a broader deal after months of tit-for-tat tariffs. The agreement came after two days of high-level talks in London, building on progress made in Geneva last month. Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.5% to 38,385.37 in morning trading. Experts noted that the late-night agreement reached in London appeared to reinforce previously established terms. US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick on Tuesday said that negotiations with China were progressing "really, really well." Both nations have suspended numerous announced tariffs during ongoing discussions. Despite the current tariff suspension, ongoing uncertainty continues to impact corporate profitability. Cognizant CEO says AI is not taking away jobs from engineering graduates: My argument is …
Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar is pushing back against predictions that artificial intelligence will devastate entry-level white-collar jobs, arguing instead that AI will create more opportunities for recent graduates. Kumar, who leads the 350,000-person IT services company, told Business Insider that his "whole thesis" contradicts Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei 's theory that AI will slash entry-level jobs in half. "My argument is you probably need more freshers than less, because as you have more freshers, the expertise levels needed goes down," Kumar said. The former nuclear scientist believes AI is fundamentally different from previous technology disruptions because it puts expertise, not just information, at workers' fingertips. AI levels the playing field for junior developers by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo At Cognizant, Kumar's theory appears to be playing out in real-time. The company's bottom 50% of developers have boosted their productivity by 37% using AI tools, compared to just 17% for the top performers, according to Kumar. This productivity leveling suggests that deep expertise is becoming less critical while interdisciplinary skills gain importance. Kumar argues that as AI lowers the barrier to entry, companies will need more junior talent to manage the expanded workload that becomes economically viable. "Tech disruptions so far put information on your fingertips," Kumar explained to Business Insider. "This is a technology which is going to put expertise on your fingertips." Industry remains divided on AI's job impact Kumar's optimism contrasts sharply with other tech leaders' warnings. Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski recently echoed Amodei's concerns, predicting AI could trigger a recession by replacing white-collar jobs. His company cut its workforce from 5,500 to 3,000 people over two years due to AI-driven productivity gains. However, Kumar acknowledges uncertainty remains. "I don't know what's the right answer, but I at least know that the model is going to change," he said, emphasizing that multiple outcomes are plausible in the AI era. AI Masterclass for Students. Modi at 11: Economy's good, but job creation, land & labour reforms need a push
There are two parameters that economists typically use to measure the economic performance of a country or any govt - growth rate and inflation. Going by GDP growth, the Indian economy expanded an average 6.8% during the UPA tenure, while averaging 6.2% between 2014-15 and 2024-25. But keeping 2020-21, when Covid resulted in economic contraction, and 2021-22, when the base effect resulted in a massive jump in growth, the average works out to 7.1%. On inflation too, the years of Modi govt have been better, averaging 8.1%, compared with 5% during the 10 years of Manmohan Singh (although based on different base years). While there is greater focus on managing food prices by ensuring improved supply and quicker responses, a big differentiator is crude oil, which has been kinder to Modi than Singh. On June 10, 2014, the Indian basket for refiners was $107 a barrel, translating into Rs 6,331 a barrel at the then exchange rate of Rs 59.26 to a dollar. Eleven years later, PPAC data for June pegs the Indian basket at $67.38 and at Tuesday's exchange rate of Rs 85.60 to a dollar, the cost works out to Rs 5,711 a barrel - almost 11% lower. "The economy delivered an average growth of 6.2% and an inflation rate of 5% over the last 11 years, despite the pandemic. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The economy is currently in a healthy shape with inflation under control, corporates and banks having healthy balance sheets, a low current account deficit, and ample forex reserves. Rains and crude oil prices, which are luck factors, are expected to be favorable this year. We expect India's GDP to grow at 6.5% in fiscal 2026, with risks tilted to the downside due to weak global prospects amid heightened uncertainty," said Crisil chief economist DK Joshi. Economists concur that on most macro parameters, the Indian economy is healthy: India remains the fastest growing major economy, inflation is within RBI's comfort zone of under 4%, the fiscal numbers are transparent, bank and corporate balance sheets are not as fragile as 10 years ago, and the current account deficit remains within control. Apart from cleaning up its books, the Centre is seen to be prudent in fiscal management. "India demonstrated exemplary commitment to fiscal prudence and discipline over the last one decade despite the unprecedented Covid shock. Accordingly, India's public debt profile turns out to be a strong advantage today, much in contrast to the current global trend. Lower public debt, along with better anchored inflation and current account deficit, political stability and strong domestic demand amidst the current uncertain global economic environment, has enormously enhanced India's attractiveness as a preferred investor destination over the past decade," said Siddhartha Sanyal, chief economist and head of research at Bandhan Bank. What govt and economists are worried about is a pick-up in private investment as companies are not adding capacity that will create more jobs. Creating more jobs in the organised sector is seen to be the biggest challenge for govt. Technology and AI are making the task tougher. Experts have argued that govt now needs to move quickly on two critical reforms - land and labour. While it did try to fix land acquisition related issues soon after coming to office in 2014, protests prompted it to drop the plans, just as it retreated on farm law amendments. On labour, while govt managed to enact the four codes, it has been wary of notifying them, blaming the reluctance in some opposition-governed states. They are seen to be particularly crucial at a time when India is signing several free trade agreements, which will see it lower tariffs. With BJP dependent on coalition partners, strategic sale of public sector companies and asset monetisation, which would have helped generate resources for fresh capex are issues that are on the back burner. But the new found political confidence may help Modi move faster. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students.
