Ludhiana East achieves highest wheat procurement and lifting in Punjab.
Ludhiana: Govt agencies in this district have completed their wheat procurement and almost finished lifting the crop from grain markets ahead of the May 31 deadline, with private traders emerging as top buyers alongside state-run entities, official data shows.
A May 20 report from the food, civil supplies, and consumer affairs department suggests that Ludhiana East achieved 100% procurement and lifting, amounting to 3.19 lakh metric tonnes, while Ludhiana West followed closely with 3.28 lakh MT procurement and 99.9% lifting. District food and supply controller (DFSC) for Ludhiana East, Shefali Chopra, said govt agencies had completed procurement and lifting in the East circle by May 16.
She credited "ground-level coordination" for the efficient operation and noted that Ludhiana East had topped the state's performance rankings this season — just as it did last year when it won the best procurement award for the fiscal 2023-24.
Statewide, Ludhiana East and SAS Nagar (Mohali) were the only districts to achieve 100% lifting by govt agencies as of May 20. In contrast, Amritsar recorded the lowest rate at 83.99%, highlighting uneven lifting progress across Punjab.

Private traders played a significant role in Ludhiana's overall wheat procurement this year. A district-level report dated May 16 shows that private players procured 1.68 LMT wheat, placing them among the top three procurement entities — behind Pungrain (1.81 LMT) and Markfed (1.79 LMT), and well ahead of FCI (60,120 MT), the lowest among govt agencies.
Manjot Singh, an Arhitya (commission agent) at the Khanna grain market, said the wheat season posed fewer logistical challenges than the paddy season due to the smaller volume of grain. "Procurement was done almost 20 days ago," he said, adding that local flour mill owners, acting as private traders, had bought in large volumes expecting future price increases. The figures come amid growing attention on food security, market volatility, and the shifting role of private enterprise in India's agricultural supply chain.

Conditioning a cool behavioural move
Agencies In a warming India, ACs are a necessity. Yet, only about 7% of households own one. That's changing fast. 14 mn units were sold last year alone, and residential ownership is projected to grow 9x by mid-century. This surge could require tripling electricity production. But before that, the grid needs protection. In a welcome step, GoI announced on Tuesday that it plans to soon mandate temperature settings between 20° C and 28° C for all ACs - residential, commercial, and even those in vehicles. The move aims to improve energy efficiency, smooth out demand spikes and cut consumer power bills. Many ACs allow settings as low as 16° C and as high as 30° C, encouraging energy 2050, air conditioning could account for a quarter of India's GHG emissions and nearly half of nationwide peak electricity demand, according to UNEP's Cool Coalition. Yet, India has so far declined to sign the coalition's Global Cooling Pledge, which seeks to reduce the sector's climate impact. There is, however, some good news. Consumers are increasingly opting for energy-efficient, star-rated ACs. But high prices remain a significant barrier, especially for lower- and middle-income buyers. A CEEW report, 'Do Residential AC Buyers Prioritise Energy Efficiency?', recommends measures like tax breaks, bulk procurement and cross-brand incentive programmes to improve affordability and encourage wider adoption. The report also highlights another crucial, but often overlooked, factor: good servicing practices (GSPs). Buying an energy-efficient AC is not enough. Without regular servicing, performance declines over the unit's 7-10-year lifespan, undermining expected energy and cost savings. To promote GSPs, awareness campaigns must stress their impact on efficiency. Without this behavioural nudge, tech and policy efforts may not deliver their full potential. Liquor excise duty hiked to cover last fiscal losses?
Nagpur: The state government may have approved a hike in excise duty on liquor with an eye on raising an additional ₹14,000 crore, but data reveals that the excise department failed to meet its revenue target in the last fiscal year in Nagpur. The excise department collected over ₹825 crore during the financial year ending March 2025, which was more than 20% below the target. Collections across the entire Nagpur division — which includes Gondia, Bhandara, and Chandrapur districts in addition to Nagpur — also fell short. The total mop-up in the division stood at ₹872 crore, missing the target by 20%. In the first two months of the current financial year, the department has collected ₹111 crore. The revenue target for Nagpur district has been set at ₹1,051 crore. Based on a monthly break-up, the excise department needs to collect around ₹175 crore per month to meet the target. The current mop-up stands at 63% below the required mark. In FY 2024-25, over 4.7 crore litres of liquor were produced by various entities in the district. Country liquor accounted for the majority at 3.8 crore litres, followed by 40 lakh litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), and over 50 lakh litres of beer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo While production of country liquor and beer remained as expected, IMFL production declined by 6.4 lakh litres, which sources attributed as one of the primary reasons for the revenue shortfall. Sources said that despite a year-on-year increase in actual collections, the targets could not be achieved. The collections include both excise duty and licence renewal fees paid by vendors. Excise duty is levied at the manufacturing stage and passed on to wholesalers and retailers. The government had fixed the revenue target, anticipating an increase in production, particularly of IMFL, which did not materialise. Production in Nagpur remains significantly lower compared to other centres in the state. The department is now awaiting the final government resolution (GR) on the excise duty hike, after which the revised rates will apply to fresh batches of production.
