Big Ocean returns as seductive mermen
Deaf trio drops its 2nd EP "Underwater"
Deaf idol group Big Ocean is making a comeback to mark both the first anniversary of its debut and Korea's Day of Persons with Disabilities on Sunday.
Big Ocean released its second mini album 'Underwater,' with four tracks: the main track 'Attention,' PJ's solo song 'Sinking,' and two B-sides that Lee Chan-yeon helped write, 'Fade Out' and 'End of Time.'
'Underwater' tells the story a group who realize they are mermen and embark on a journey to awaken their instincts.
According to the group's agency, Parastar Entertainment, the subtitle of the new album, "Embracing the Black Ocean," conveys the message that everyone harbors deep and powerful instincts beneath the surface.
The main track 'Attention' portrays the story of a narrator gaining confidence after realizing they are a 'mermaid.' The song tempts listeners to surrender to their emotions and follow the pull of their hearts. Member Kim Ji-seok contributed to the choreography.
Big Ocean kicked off its first European tour in Lausanne, Switzerland on Saturday and Sunday, and will proceed to stops in Milan, London, Paris and Montpellier.
Meanwhile, member Park Hyun-jin has changed his stage name to PJ in conjunction with the album's release.

Ma Dong-seok's 'Holy Night: Demon Hunters' to screen at Shanghai film fest
Supernatural action flick joins international lineup at China's premier cinema event Actor-producer Ma Dong-seok's occult action film "Holy Night: Demon Hunters" has been selected for screening at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival's Midnight Fantasy section, distributor Lotte Entertainment announced Tuesday. One of China's major cinema events, the Shanghai International Film Festival is the only Chinese festival accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations. "The Wailing" (2016), "Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum" (2018), "The Roundup: Punishment" (2024) and "Exhuma" (2024) are among Korean films that previously screened in the non-competitive Midnight Fantasy section, which mainly showcases international genre cinema. This year's festival runs June 13-22. "Holy Night: Demon Hunters" follows a trio of supernatural investigators combating demonic forces. Ma plays Bau, a fighter with superhuman strength, alongside Girls' Generation member Seohyun as exorcist Sharon, and David Lee as their tech-savvy sidekick Kim Gun. The cast also includes Kyung Soo-jin and Jung Ji-so as sisters swept into the fray. Ma, also known as Don Lee, produced the film, developing the project as part of a broader genre franchise. A prequel web comic, "Holy Night: The Zero," currently runs on Naver Webtoon. The film has drawn 777,323 admissions in South Korea since its April 30 release, falling short of its reported 2 million breakeven threshold. The film is available on local streaming platforms Coupang Play and Wavve in addition to Apple TV.

Naver, Webtoon CEOs head to Silicon Valley to meet Netflix executives
Top executives from Korea's Naver and its webtoon subsidiary are set to meet with Netflix leadership this week in Silicon Valley, signaling a potential deepening of strategic collaboration between the digital content giants. According to Naver on Monday, the IT giant's CEO Choi Soo-yeon and Webtoon Entertainment CEO Kim Jun-koo are slated to visit Netflix headquarters on Thursday at the invitation of the US streaming platform. It will mark the first meeting between Choi and Netflix executives. While details have not been disclosed, the invitation-only nature of the meeting has sparked speculation about new collaborative opportunities at both the content and platform levels. The two companies have been strengthening ties since last year. In November, Naver integrated a Netflix subscription benefit into its paid membership program. Under the deal, users paying 4,900 won ($3.55) per month for a Naver Membership were granted access to Netflix's ad-supported plan, which costs 7,000 won -- a move widely seen as a bold and innovative bundling strategy. The so-called Naver-Netflix partnership has shown tangible results. Netflix's monthly active users across the country surged from 10 million in June 2023 to over 14 million after the Naver partnership was launched. Naver saw a 1.5-fold increase in average daily new signups to its membership service. On the content side, Naver Webtoon has emerged as a key intellectual property supplier to Netflix. Original webtoon-based series such as 'All of Us Are Dead,' 'Sweet Home' and 'Trauma Center: Golden Hour' have topped the global charts, cementing the webtoon platform's value on streaming platforms. Despite market rumors, both sides denied that the upcoming talks would explore the integration of Naver Webtoon content directly into the Netflix mobile app. 'It's a meeting arranged purely within the context of a partnership,' a Naver official said. 'The CEOs are indeed scheduled to meet with Netflix executives at their invitation, but there are no predetermined agendas or confirmed outcomes,' the official added.
