Veteran explorer to celebrate 89th birthday with 22-mile charity row

Independent24-04-2025

A veteran explorer is aiming to celebrate his 89th birthday by rowing 22 miles to help restore Britain's temperate rainforests.
Robin Hanbury-Tenison, 88, from Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, will row along the River Tamar across two days in May.
Mr Hanbury-Tenison, who climbed Cornwall's highest peak aged 84, five months after surviving coronavirus, hopes to raise £200,000 for Thousand Year Trust, a charity dedicated to tripling the amount of temperate rainforest in the UK.
The author and explorer said he is determined to complete his rowing challenge despite his family's objections.
'My theory is that as long as bits of you are still working, you might as well use them to your advantage,' Mr Hanbury-Tenison told the PA news agency.
'My legs are pretty well given out now, so no more running or climbing mountains, but the arms are still pretty strong.
'I'm just going to get out and have a nice row up and down and I think I'll do it all right, and I hope I'll raise quite a lot of money.'
Mr Hanbury-Tenison, who has travelled to some of the world's most remote places, said he has always enjoyed rowing.
'I actually spent most of my childhood in Ireland in a tree house on an island on the lake, rowing back every morning about a mile to shore,' he said.
'Then when I became an explorer, my first big expedition was to cross the first crossing of South America from east to west in 1958 and from north to south in 1964 to 1965.'
He also led the Royal Geographical Society's largest expedition to date, taking a group of 115 scientists into the rainforest in Borneo for 15 months from 1977 to 1978.
Now he is supporting his son Merlin Hanbury-Tenison's efforts to preserve Britain's temperate rainforest.
Merlin, who founded the Thousand Year Trust in 2023, is crowdfunding to raise £750,000 to create the UKs first Rainforest Research Station and Community Hub.
The station will be built on the site of the family's former farm on Bodmin Moor which has become a retreat centre and rainforest restoration project.
'Merlin, my son, and daughter-in-law have started a retreat there, where people come and detox in the wood itself,' said Mr Hanbury-Tenison.
'He suffered from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) after being in the Army and a lot of people come and get therapy from being in the woodland.
'The trust is to triple the size of the remaining temperate rainforest.
'At the moment there's only little fragments and valleys. We hope to join them all up and in the next 30 years have a million acres of temperate rainforest.'
Mr Hanbury-Tenison will embark on his rowing challenge on May 7 and 8, marking two special occasions: his birthday and the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
He aims to complete the feat in a little wooden boat which he likens to an image of The Owl And The Pussycat.
'The idea is that I'm just doing that with a few supplies, some jelly babies on the bench in front of me, and a bunch of bananas, and off we go.'

UFC ace Paul Craig to embark on gruelling Help for Heroes charity bike ride

Paul Craig will take part in Help for Heroes Battlefield Bike Ride just days after a major fight UFC star Paul Craig is embarking on a 250-mile bike ride just days after taking on Rodolfo Bellato at UFC Atlanta. The Airdrie 37-year-old lands on Sunday from the US and heads straight to Buckingham Palace on Monday, to take part in the Help for Heroes Battlefield Bike Ride. ‌ The route, from the palace in London to Rheine in Germany from June 16 to 21 is the path that World War II Allies took over five days, and marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day. ‌ Craig originally had a month between his fight and the challenge, but the bout against Bellato in May was postponed 30 minute before when his Brazilian opponent had 'facial herpes'. Instead, the two go head-to-head in the US tonight. The popular fighter said: 'We're straight into a charity bike ride. I was meant to have that on May 17, so that would give me enough time. 'Because the fight was moved, I have to do the fight and then the five-day bike ride. 'It's from Buckingham Palace to Germany, and it's the route that the soldiers from World War II would have taken. ‌ 'It was a great idea when I signed up for it and there was a month's buffer between the fight and this, but the last thing I want to do is pull out from this. 'I think it's a great opportunity, not only for me but to help a charity.' Craig was moments away from taking part in UFC Vegas last month. ‌ He said: 'We were in our fight kit, in our gloves. Our hands were wrapped up, the commission had already taped off our hands, signed off our gloves, all that sort of stuff. 'Then the head of the UFC comes in and there are only a few things that can see the UFC brass in your locker room – you've messed up, or somebody else has messed up, and it was the latter, so the fight was pulled. 'At that moment you're already switched on to go to war, and then it's about switching back off, so there were all these emotions in my head. 'We had worked so hard for 10 weeks to be ready for a fight, and not to get the outcome is horrible. 'But that's part of this sport, part of being an athlete.'

Red Arrows 2025 schedule mapped - see if they will fly past your house

The Red Arrows will bring dazzling displays to the British Isles and the European mainland this summer - see if they will fly past you on our interactive map below VE Day: Royals watch on as Red Arrows fly over Buckingham Palace The Red Arrows will wow crowds across Britain and abroad as part of a jam-packed schedule this summer. Pilots of the famous Red Arrows set the skies ablaze with incredible stunts and flyovers during the VE celebrations. And they are set to take their show on a grand tour across the British Isles, as well as taking part in demonstrations on the European mainland. Some 60 displays were announced with the season well underway. Squadron Leader Jon Bond, who is leading the team, previously said: "Training for the Red Arrows' 61st season is well underway and we can't wait to display at shows this summer. "Exercise Springhawk is a crucial part of the preparations for this, allowing all parts of the team to come together - often in more settled, finer weather than at home - to further develop the new show." See if the Red Arrows will fly near you on our interactive map below During the tour, the Red Arrows will demonstrate several types of display, depending on the altitudes of clouds. The Red Arrows website states: "There are three types of display the Team Leader can elect to fly – full, rolling or flat. "To carry out a full, looping display, the base of the cloud must be above 5,500ft to avoid the aircraft entering the cloud at the top of the loop. If the cloud base is less than 5,500ft, but more than 2,500ft, the team will perform the rolling display – substituting wing-overs and rolls for the loops. When the cloud base is below 2,500ft, the team will fly the flat display, consisting of a series of flypasts and steep turns." Training for the summer season begins almost as soon as the previous one ends, starting in October with small groups of three or four aircraft formations. During the display season, the Red Arrows often carry out two shows and several flypasts in a single day. People can find times of arrival and departure from airfields as well as information about the show times by visiting Royal Air Force social media profiles. They wrapped up in winter coats, with Levison in a black padded jacket and the new lady in his life wearing a black coat and a khaki beanie hat. He then shared a candid snap of her looking content as she glanced out of a window. While another photo showed them exploring the outdoors and on adventures - including them canoeing and in front a picturesque mountain backdrop. The former Army officer wrote: "Over the years I've met many people on the road, but every now and then, someone comes along who doesn't just travel with you, but changes the pace of the journey entirely. This is Ana. "We've been exploring a shared path together lately, one filled with plenty of adventures, challenges and commitment. "An exciting new chapter awaits." Levison previously told The Sun about his dating life and admitted in 2023 that he's not short of offers since he started making his shows for Channel 4 in 2015. Levison even got advice, however unconventional, on landing a wife during his adventures, the most recent of which saw him travel to Namibia, in southern Africa, to film desert lions. Explorer Levison Wood on becoming a sex symbol He said: 'The lead woman in the Himba tribe initiated me into the tribe by putting clay dreadlocks in my hair, which she said would make me look a lot more stylish. 'They also have this test for men, a sort of coming of age ceremony when they are 12, where they get their bottom two front teeth knocked out with a brick. 'I've obviously still got my teeth, and they were taking the p*** out of me, saying, 'You're never going to find a wife and get married if you've got those teeth'.' He said: 'I'd love to have a family one day, but I don't think there is any need to follow convention and settle down at all. 'Sod that, I'm more up for continuing the adventures, no matter what. But I try to avoid talking about finding someone and love, as the last time I did, I ended up with a stalker.' In 2020 the said stalker was jailed for three months after more than eight months of harassment during which the woman contacted Levison's parents and turned up outside his house in South West London. Speaking about his brush with a stalker, he told The Times: "I've had some persistent fans over the years but this was on another level. "It went from being a nuisance to her contacting family members, turning up outside my house. It wasn't nice: I was looking over my shoulder wherever I went. "I was reluctant at first to contact the police because last year I felt they had bigger things to deal with. "It felt embarrassing more than anything. Women get this a lot more than blokes do, so it was a real learning curve to be on the receiving end." Levison went public with his stalker hell on Instagram in 2020 when he said the person in question had "taken it to the next level" by contacting his family. He wrote at the time: "So the stalker has taken it to the next level and started to message my parents. @brumpolice pls advise is there anything that can be done? "She claims to be a paediatric doctor and records show her license was revoked. This person needs to be removed from any contact with kids." The star later added: "I've blocked this psycho three times today. @instagram does nothing and said individual just sets up new account and puts vile and obscene comments all over my wall." Levison is known for his Channel 4 documentary From Russia To Iran: Crossing The Wild Frontier. He is formerly a member of the British Army and has fought in the war in Afghanistan. In 2010, Levison decided to leave the Army and started pursuing a career in photography and journalism before going on to become a best-selling author. However, in 2021 he decided to rejoin as a Major in the 77th Brigade which was only formed in January 2015. The TV star previously revealed he nearly died while filming for a documentary after his taxi plunged off a 500ft down a cliff face in Western Nepal, while also experiencing other close calls. He told The Sun: 'The times I've been closest to death weren't in the Army but on expedition. 'For this series, in Greenland there was a real risk our boat could have been crushed by ice as the waters change direction with the wind, and in the desert you're up against wild animals. 'Our crew got chased by a lion in Namibia. I had to dive into the back of the car because one was bounding towards me. That was slightly terrifying. 'There are risks everywhere and you have to be very, very vigilant. 'You can imagine the length of the safety form that needs to be filled out. But everyone accepts there are loads of risks. If you want to show people these stories some- body has to be out there on the front line. 'At least I'm not getting shot at this time.' 7 Levison said Ana has changed his life for the better Credit: Instagram 7 The adventurer previously opened up about his scary stalking ordeal Credit: Getty
