
Trade tensions may fuel Malaysia's port growth

KUALA LUMPUR: The uncertainty surrounding US trade policy may hit global port activity but Malaysia stands to benefit from the diversion of trade especially those from China.
Industry experts said cargoes that were initially US-bound may be redirected to Malaysia or other ports in Southeast Asia due to the tariffs on imported goods into the US.
Maritime industry analyst Nazery Khalid said the tariff war is one of the biggest geopolitical developments that will lead to repercussions for many countries.
He opined that the imposition of tariff by the US could backfire and adversely affect its economy as small and medium enterprises there bear the brunt of higher imports
"What has happened is that products are piling up at US ports as their local importers from industries or companies refuse to pick up the cargos they have ordered because they have been slapped with higher tariffs.
"What this will also lead to is diversion of trade. Cargoes that otherwise would have gone to the US will now shift to other regions because a lot of the things imported by the US are also needed elsewhere," he told Business Times.
Notably, some ports in Malaysia are already seeing an increase in container throughput, including Sapangar Bay Container Port, said Nazery.
"Sapangar Bay has seen an increase of 23 per cent in volume in March 2025 compared to March 2024. This shows that there is a pick up in volumes of intra-Asia trade arising from the diversion of cargo into this region," he added.
Prior to the issues arising from the tariff war, Nazery said some local ports were faced with challenges such as bottlenecks along the supply chain, poor connectivity of ports or volatility in freight rates, among others.
"This tariff war which results in recalibration of trade from the US to our region can be used as a time to improve efficiency, to beef up capacity and also for local and regional ports to leverage on the growing amount of cargo in this region," he said.
LBB International chief executive officer Dr Marco Tieman said the tariffs are affecting the US and economies in the European Union due to their high debt levels. This is likely to affect trade volumes in the coming years.
He said that there may be issues surrounding transshipment container volumes which will go down if both of the economies are not doing well.
"Mid-term however, Malaysia might even benefit from more China trade flowing through Malaysia as well as increase in foreign direct investment from China where selected production from China might move to Malaysia.
"Malaysia is providing value added logistics services, like repacking and light processing," he said.
In the long term, Tieman said Malaysia will need to focus more on Asia as well as trade among Organisation of Islamic Cooperation countries.
"There are opportunities for Malaysian ports to facilitate halal trade flows as a global hub," said Tieman.
Meanwhile, Fitch Ratings said in a note that the overall impact of US tariffs on ports in Asia will be modest as they generally benefit from "take-or-pay" contracts and have lower exposure to the US.
"Higher tariffs on China will benefit other Asian ports as US importers switch to suppliers in other countries and shippers reroute transshipments through other ports in the region.
"Vietnam, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia could see an increase in intra-Asian trade and transshipment volumes, which could help offset the negative effects of a global economic slowdown," the firm said.
On the global front, Fitch expects the impact on global port sector credit to be muted overall, due to various factors that mitigate the effects of volume and revenue pressures on port credit quality.
Port ratings have been resilient to prior periods of volume declines, such as in 2023 when the US and European port volumes dropped 13 per cent and four per cent, respectively.
The decline took place as consumer spending rotated to services from goods following the pandemic.
"Revenues generally outperform volumes in weak economic years due to contractual revenue buffers, the presence of other stable revenues such as cruise fees, and rate flexibility," it said.

BNM's international reserves increase to US$119.60 billion as at May 30 KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's international reserves grew marginally to US$119.60 billion (RM506.63 billion) as at May 30, 2025, from US$119.10 billion (RM504.51 billion) recorded as at May 15, 2025, according to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). In a statement today, the central bank said the reserves position is sufficient to finance 5.0 months of imports of goods and services, and is 0.9 times the total short-term external debt. The main components of the reserves were foreign currency reserves (US$106.4 billion), the International Monetary Fund reserve position (US$1.3 billion), special drawing rights (SDRs) (US$5.8 billion), gold (US$3.8 billion) and other reserve assets (US$2.3 billion). Total assets amounted to RM627.92 billion, comprising gold and foreign exchange and other reserves, including SDRs (RM530 billion), Malaysian government papers (RM12.92 billion), deposits with financial institutions (RM4.26 million), loans and advances (RM27.00 billion), land and buildings (RM4.58 billion), and other assets (RM49.16 billion). The central bank said total capital and liabilities amounted to RM627.92 billion, comprising paid-up capital (RM100 million), reserves (RM193.24 billion), currency in circulation (RM172.90 billion), deposits by financial institutions (RM131.81 billion), federal government deposits (RM5.44 billion), other deposits (RM82.37 billion), Bank Negara papers (RM10.56 billion), allocation of SDRs (RM28.38 billion), and other liabilities (RM3.12 billion).

Markel International appoints Sucheng Chang to lead Asia Pacific operations

Banking sector resilient with provision buffers ahead of global headwinds
THE quarter one 2025 (1Q25) reporting season came in broadly within expectations. Seven of the eight banks under Hong Leong Investment Bank's coverage (Affin, Alliance, AMMB, CIMB, Maybank, Public Bank, and RHB) delivered results that tracked closely with their forecasts. The lone exception was BIMB, which missed due to higher-than-anticipated credit costs. 'Stripping out non-recurring items from 4Q24, core earnings dipped 3.4% quarter-on-quarter (qoq),' said Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB). This came despite a 3.6% rise in pre-impairment operating profit (PIOP), which was supported by positive JAWs (+0.3ppt) and robust non-interest income growth (NOII; +7%). The drag came from higher loan loss provisions (+11.6%) and a weaker contribution from associates (-27.3%). Net Interest Margins (NIM)s were broadly stable, with Affin standing out positively (+7 basis points). Sector core earnings rose 4.1%, underpinned by lower loan loss provisions (-22.9%) and stronger associate contributions (+31.2%). PIOP grew modestly by 1.1%, with net interest income (NII) up +3.4%, partially offset by a dip in NOII (-1.3%). Cost control remained commendable, with operating expenses rising 2.9%. Top performers were Affin (+12.6%) and Alliance (+11.1%), with both delivering robust NII growth, alongside effective cost and provision management, respectively. Both loan and deposit growth moderated, reflecting festive seasonality and FX volatility. Banks continued to pull back from expensive deposit campaigns to protect NIMs. Meanwhile, Alliance was the only bank to post double-digit loan and deposit growth. Asset quality remained firm, with the sector gross impaired loan (GIL) ratio ticking up 1 basis point QoQ to 1.38%. 'Heading into 2Q25, we expect NIMs in 2Q25 to hold up reasonably well sequentially,' said HLIB. HLIB sees three key forces at play: fresh liquidity from the recent SRR cut, easing deposit competition, and a sector-wide pivot to more disciplined loan expansion and funding strategies. This proactive stance is already visible, with banks cutting promotional/campaign FD rates by 5-15 basis points in May, ahead of a potential overnight policy rate cut, though the full margin benefit may only materialize in the second half of 2025. Beyond margins, the bedrock of asset quality is expected to remain solid, supported by resilient domestic economic conditions and minimal US trade exposure. 'While acknowledging risks from the secondary impacts of trade uncertainty, we believe any potential weakness will be well-contained,' said HLIB. The sector is significantly more resilient than in previous downturns, primarily due to the formidable provision buffers accumulated over the past five years. This 'fortress of provisions' provides a robust defence, capable of absorbing any stress and cushioning the GIL ratio, which currently stands near historical lows. 'We reiterate our overweight stance on the Malaysian banking sector, viewing the KLFIN Index's 7% year to date decline as a strategic opportunity to build positions ahead of an anticipated market recovery in the latter half of 2025,' said HLIB. —June 9, 2025 Main image: European Commission
