Karnataka to establish care centres for mentally ill in four districts
The Karnataka government has approved the establishment of care centres for mentally challenged persons in the districts of Chitradurga, Yadgir, Kolar, and Bidar, with a grant of ₹6 crore.
The centres will be established in collaboration with NGO Aaladamara Foundation, said an order issued by the Health Department on Friday. The Karnataka State Budget for 2025 had said that care centres for mentally ill persons would be established at district-level hospitals in collaboration with NGOs.
The order issued on Friday stated that similar centres will be established in the remaining 27 districts at district-level hospitals in collaboration with NGOs.
'Due to challenges in accessing nearby mental health services, thousands of mentally ill persons leave their homes and become homeless every year. Identifying mentally ill persons among the homeless and bringing them to a safe place is a key function of the system,' stated the order.
The order cited the Mental Health Care Act, 2017, which says that it is essential to initiate community-based, human rights-friendly care, support, assessment, and treatment for mentally ill individuals.

Uttarakhand: 7 people test positive for COVID-19 in Dehradun
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 7 (ANI): Seven people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Dehradun, taking the total number of cases in the district to 29. On Friday, three people from Rishikesh, one from Sahaspur, and three from the Raipur region were infected with coronavirus. According to the Health Department, 25 patients were tested for COVID-19 on Friday, seven of whom were reported to be positive. The health department is looking for people who came in contact with the infected patients. In view of the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in India, a series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 with various representatives under the chairpersonship of Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS). According to release, the representatives include Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response (EMR) Cell, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and Central Government Hospitals in Delhi and with representatives from all States and UTs to evaluate the current COVID-19 situation and preparedness measures. As of June 7, 2025, at 8 AM, India reported 5364 active COVID-19 cases. Most cases are mild and managed under home care. Since January 1, 2025, 55 deaths have been reported, primarily among individuals with pre-existing illnesses. States have been instructed to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines. A mock drill assessing oxygen supply systems (PSA plants, LMO tanks, MGPS lines) was conducted on June 2. Meanwhile, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati researchers have developed a novel method for detecting and measuring the amount of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The innovative approach is based on how quickly a clay-virus-electrolyte mixture settles; a process commonly known as sedimentation. The findings of this research have been published in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal, Applied Clay Science, in a paper co-authored by Prof. T V Bharat, Department of Civil Engineering, and Prof. Sachin Kumar, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, along with research scholars Dr Himanshu Yadav and Deepa Mehta at IIT Guwahati. Odisha Ramps Up Covid-19 Vigilance Amid National Surge: 38 Cases Reported
Amidst reports regarding a spike in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Odisha government has intensified its monitoring and containment measures to ensure public health safety across the state, said an official here on Friday. Referring to latest data released by the Health Department, a statement noted that a total of 755 samples have been tested in Odisha as of June 6, 2025. Of these, 38 samples have returned positive, with 9 individuals already recovered. The remaining 29 patients are in home isolation and reported to be stable. To align state-level strategies with national preparedness, the government of Odisha participated in a high-level virtual review meeting held on June 3, 2025, chaired by Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), Government of India. The meeting included representatives from ICMR institutions, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), State Surveillance Units, and various state health authorities. Following the meeting, the Union Health Ministry released a detailed press note noting that India currently has 4,302 active Covid-19 cases, with 864 new cases reported in the past 24 hours. Most of these cases are mild and are being managed at home. Since January 1, 2025, there have been 44 reported Covid-19-related deaths, mainly among individuals with comorbidities. 'Healthcare systems have been directed to ensure adequate oxygen supply, availability of ventilators, isolation beds, and essential medicines. Mock drills to test oxygen infrastructure and hospital-level readiness were conducted on June 2 and further planned for June 4–5. Surveillance of ILI and SARI cases has been intensified, and positive samples are being sent for Whole Genome Sequencing. The public has been advised to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour, including hand hygiene, cough etiquette, self-monitoring, and avoiding crowded spaces when symptomatic,' reads the statement. The Odisha government has reiterated its commitment to strictly implementing all precautionary measures and guidelines issued by the Centre, aiming to minimize the impact of the current Covid-19 surge and protect public health. The state government has requested people to remain vigilant, avoid panic, and rely only on verified sources such as the MoH&FW website and official bulletins for accurate information.
