
Heathrow airport closure sparks global turmoil
Britain's Heathrow said on Friday it was unclear when Europe's busiest airport would be able to re-open after a fire knocked out its power, stranding passengers and angering airlines who questioned how such crucial infrastructure could fail.
Huge orange flames and plumes of black smoke shot into the sky around 23:00 GMT on Thursday as a blaze engulfed a substation near the airport, cutting the power supply and a back-up system.
Police said that while there was no indication of foul play, they retained an open mind and counter-terrorism officers would lead the inquiries, given their capabilities and the critical nature of the infrastructure.
Heathrow, which is also the world's fifth-busiest airport, said at 13:30 GMT that it did not have clarity on when power would be reliably restored, having previously said the airport would be shut until midnight.
Airline experts said the last time European airports experienced disruption on such a large scale was the 2010 Icelandic ash cloud that grounded some 100,000 flights.
The industry is now facing the prospect of a financial hit costing tens of millions of pounds and a likely fight over who should pay.
"You would think they would have significant back-up power," said one top executive from a European airline.

The fire brigade said the cause of the fire was not known, but that 25,000 litres of cooling oil in the substation's transformer had caught fire. By the morning the transformer could be seen smouldering, doused in white firefighting foam.
Heathrow had been due to handle 1,351 flights on Friday, flying up to 291,000 passengers. The closure forced flights to divert to other airports in Britain and across Europe, while many long-haul flights returned to their point of departure.
Passengers stranded in London and facing the prospect of days of disruptions were scrambling to make alternate travel arrangements.
"It's pretty stressful," Robyn Autry, 39, a professor, who had been due to fly home to New York. "I'm worried about how much is it going to cost me to fix this."
Industry experts warned that some passengers forced to land in Europe may have to stay in transit lounges if they lack the paperwork to leave the airport.
Global flight schedules will also be affected, as aircraft and crews will now be out of position, forcing carriers to rapidly reconfigure their networks.
Prices at hotels around Heathrow jumped, with booking sites offering rooms for $645, roughly five times the normal price levels.
"Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information," Heathrow said. "We apologise for the inconvenience."
Airline executives, electrical engineers and passengers questioned how Britain's gateway to the world could be forced to close by one fire, however large.
Heathrow and London's other major airports, have been hit by other outages in recent years, most recently by an automated gate failure and an air traffic system meltdown, both in 2023. — Reuters

The statistics indicate that this growth is attributed to an 8.6-per cent rise in the total number of hotel guests, recording 831,751 guests by the end of April 2025, compared to 766,153 guests in the corresponding period in 2024. Additionally, the occupancy rate increased from 53.4 per cent by the end of April 2024 compared to 61.1 per cent by the end of April 2025, marking a 14.4 per cent growth. The number of guests from Oceania surged by 57.8 per cent, totalling 18,124 visitors, followed by Africa with a 57.6-per cent increase, reaching 5,993 guests. European guests rose by 19.9 per cent, totalling 314,535 visitors. Meanwhile, guests from the Americas increased by 19.1 per cent, reaching 28,843 visitors, while GCC nationals saw a 12.6-per cent increase, totalling 53,642 guests. Asian nationalities recorded a 5.4-per cent rise, with 114,426 visitors. Conversely, the statistics revealed a 0.7-per cent decline in Omani guests, totalling 238,895 visitors by the end of April 2025. Additionally, guests from other Arab nationalities decreased by 2.3 per cent, recording 32,072 visitors.

Hotels in Oman post strong growth in revenues, guests
Muscat – Oman's three- to five-star hotel sector posted a strong growth in revenues, guest numbers and occupancy rates in the first four months of 2025, reflecting a continued rebound in the country's tourism and hospitality industry. According to the latest figures released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), total revenues of three- to five-star hotels rose 17.3% year-on-year to RO109.213mn by the end of April this year, compared to RO93.094mn during the same period in 2024. The increase in revenue was supported by a notable rise in the number of guests, which climbed 8.6% to reach 831,751 by the end of April this year, up from 766,153 guests recorded in the corresponding period of 2024. Occupancy rates also saw a significant jump, rising to 61.1% in April 2025 from 53.4% in April 2024 – an increase of 14.4%. NCSI statistics showed strong growth in visitor numbers from several key markets. The number of guests from Oceania registered the highest year-on-year increase of 57.8%, reaching 18,124 visitors. Guests from Africa followed closely with a 57.6% rise to 5,993. European tourists continued to represent a major share, rising 19.9% to 314,535 guests. Arrivals from the Americas grew by 19.1% to 28,843, while GCC nationals increased by 12.6% to 53,642. Asian guest numbers rose 5.4% to 114,426. In contrast, domestic tourism showed a slight decline. Farmer turns Jabal Shams village into fruit haven with 32 varieties
Muscat – An Omani farmer has grown more than 32 varieties of fruits in Jabal Shams, Oman's highest mountain, in what is being seen as a unique agricultural feat in the Middle East. Situated 2,000m above sea level, villages in Jabal Shams are known for their distinct climate – cool in summer and cold in winter – that supports growing stone fruits such as peaches and apricots. Asaad bin Nasser al Khatri, a resident of Dar al Souda village, has tapped into this environment to establish a thriving orchard on the mountain's rugged terrain. 'I've managed to grow a wide variety of fruits here, including grapes, apricots and different types of plums – black, yellow and blue,' Khatri said. 'The trees typically live for two to three years. I've also visited several European countries to import rare fruit varieties and learn advanced techniques like drip irrigation.' The mountain's cool climate and fertile soil create ideal condit-ions for fruit cultivation. 'Februa-ry is one of the most beautiful times of the year when apricot and peach trees come into blo-om,' he said. 'This beauty lasts through April and May, when the fruit are ready to harvest.' According to Khatri, each apricot tree on his farm yields between 30kg and 100kg of fruit, depending on age, water availability and seasonal factors. His peach trees produce large fruit that are juicy and sweet. Mountain communities of Jabal Shams have traditionally grown grapes, berries and pomegranates, supplying produce to tourists and Al Hamra market, a regional hub for agricultural trade. Khatri opts for eco-friendly methods to ward off pests. 'I use environmentally safe pesticides that are effective and don't harm the ecosystem.' Khatri now plans to develop agricultural tourism, inviting visitors to experience fruit farming at high altitude. His initiative includes guided farm tours, fruit-picking activities during harvest season, and trekking through the surrounding mountains. 'Jabal Shams offers a full sensory experience – fresh mountain air, stunning landscapes and fresh fruits. It's a new chapter in Omani agri-tourism.'
