Sharks coach Plumtree positive Springbok bruiser Eben Etzebeth will overcome thigh injury

South African rugby hearts sank on Friday night when Eben Etzebeth left the Kings Park pitch on a golf cart, his face a mask of pain.
But coach John Plumtree suspects the injury sustained against the Ospreys is no more than a 'lamey'.
The Sharks won a hard-fought match 29-10 to secure a home United Rugby Championship quarter-final, but as is becoming the norm, the subplot is about the health of Springbok talisman Etzebeth.
The 33-year-old has barely played since early December last year because of a concussion, a hamstring strain, and the flu.
'Hopefully, Eben's not too bad,' Plumtree said after the match.
'I'm hoping it's just a haematoma that might come right before this week's game (against the Scarlets).
'He's a quick healer, Eben, but we'll know more after he gets a scan.'
Etzebeth tried to run off the thigh injury, but ultimately erred on the side of caution and came off. The excellent Manu Tshituka replaced him.
'You could see Eben was trying to push through, but it was too sore. I spoke to him at halftime. and he felt a bit better.'

Plumtree was unsure how to evaluate a team performance that once more was gritty, but not overly impressive.
'It was a workmanlike performance,' he said. 'I was just saying how wet the pitch was because of the dew and humidity.
'The boys found the ball slippery and that meant it was never going to be an attractive game of rugby from both sides.
'It became a kick battle and a set-piece struggle.
'There was a mindset of keeping the ball in front of the forwards and obviously a focus on defence. I was really happy with our defence.
'We knew Cardiff captain Jac Morgan was going to be a threat at the breakdown, and he showed why he's going on tour with the British and Irish Lions.
'It got a bit patchy with our scrums, but once we settled down, we were better.
'We had a lot of powerful running tonight from our loose forwards and tight five. A guy like Jason Jenkins really stood up.

A total 54 players were named in Rassie Erasmus' first Bok squad of the season which kicks off on 28 June against the Barbarians, followed by the Castle Lager Incoming Series. It's an unchanged group from the year's second alignment camp in Cape Town. Included are 10 Bulls players, all named in the squad to play in the URC semi-final. Only the Sharks have more players in the squad (11). White warns against 'trials' mentality 'It's like trials tomorrow,' White said. 'One of the messages I've given the players: 'I please don't want you to play like it's trials. I want you to play like it's a team.' 'Because often what happens in these situations is whenever you announce a team before a big game… There's 54 guys, they all want to be Springboks. They all want to be in the first round. 'They know they will compete against the guys they are playing against tomorrow. It doesn't matter what I say, they know this is an opportunity in front of selectors – in front of the public – for them to stake a claim.' Still, the coach said his job was to make his charges understand the play-off fixture was not about individuals. 'I said to them in the changeroom today, they've been picked on what they did the last 18 weeks. It's got nothing to do with how they have to do tomorrow. 'They are not going to do anything tomorrow that is going to make them put their hand up. They've put their hand up to be picked in the 54-man squad by what they've done for the last couple of months. I just want them to continue doing that.' Bulls out for third time lucky, Sharks want to stake claim The Sharks reach the semi-final stages of the URC for the first time, while this is the third time for the Bulls. The Pretoria outfit have never won the trophy and will have the mentality of righting wrongs of the past, while the Sharks intend to stake their claim. The Sharks have beaten the Bulls twice in the URC this season (20–17 in Durban in December and 29–19 at Loftus in February). That means two of the Bulls' four defeats in the campaign came against the Sharks, who also won the SA shield for the first time. It's been a breakout season for the Sharks but White and his charges will want to become the second SA team to win the URC after the Stormers.

It was a fourth doubles Grand Slam title for the South African ace, who fell short of reaching the singles final in an earlier semi-final. Montjane and Kamiji faced the Chinese pairing of Xiaohui Li and Ziying Wang, the No 2 seeds, in the women's doubles final. They had to dig deep, fighting back from a set down to secure a 4-6 7-5 (10-7) victory. They reclaimed the trophy they lifted at Roland Garros in 2023. The duo also won the US Open title together in 2023, as well as the Wimbledon crown last year. Montjane and Kamiji beat top seeds Manami Tanaka of Japan and Zhenzhen Shu of China 6-1 6-4 to reach the decider. Earlier on Friday, in the men's quad doubles final, Donald Ramphadi of SA and Turkish partner Ahmet Kaplan lost 6-3 6-4 to Guy Sasson of Israel and Niels Vink of the Netherlands.
