Skateboarding: 7 skate parks on the Treasure Coast, 3 more coming soon
The skateboarding scene on the Treasure Coast is growing.
At least three new skate parks are in the works for Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties — adding to the existing seven skate parks in the area where skateboarding is allowed.
In the East Stuart neighborhood, about 12,500 square feet has been designated for a skate park at Guy Davis Park, specifically at 724 S.E. 10th St., according to city spokesperson Misti Guertin.
City officials are waiting on a conceptual rendering, followed by comments from the design team, Guertin said. They are expecting to bring project details to the commissioners this year.
In Port St. Lucie's Torino area, city officials have been getting community feedback about the skateboarding features at the skate park at the future Torino Regional Park, a 195-acre complex on North Torino Parkway.
Construction is expected to begin during the first few months of 2026, according to officials. Action Sports Design, the company behind the skate park, is making it accessible to skateboarders, bikers, scooter riders, in-line skaters and more.
In Vero Beach's Three Corners area near the former power plant, the Vero Beach Skate Park Alliance — which turned 10 years old in May — is waiting for details about the city's plan with its chosen developer for the Three Corners project before it has more information about a skate park going there.
The project is a mixed-use development of entertainment, recreation, restaurants, shopping and open space that would be built on city-owned land along the waterfront at 17th Street and Indian River Boulevard.
Until the new skate parks open, here are the seven existing skate parks across the Treasure Coast and what they have to offer skateboarders.

The Fellsmere Skate Park opened in October 2021 at the end of Myrtle Street near the basketball courts. It was funded through a $700,000 Florida Small Cities Community Development Block Grant.
The park was proposed five years ago by then 10-year-old Kyle Goldsmith of Fellsmere, who approached the City Council about the need for more recreational opportunities for local youth.

The Lawnwood Skate Park opened in 2008 next to the Havert L. Fenn Center in Fort Pierce. Orlando-based Team Pain worked through architecture firm Glatting Jackson Kercher Anglin Lopez Rinehart, which has built ramps and parks for the X Games and Tony Hawk.
For a year, they teamed with St. Lucie County Parks and Recreation staff and the skate park committee to design the plans and build the $500,000, 15,000-square-foot concrete facility. The architects gave blank sheets of paper to the kids on the committee for them to draw their skate park.
It includes a street area with a four-flat, four-double set with a square handrail and a hubba; a 50-foot-long ledge with three smaller handrails; a curved ledge; a manual pad ledge; a bench; a whale tail ledge; and a snake run.

The Pat Mark Rio-Jensen Skate Park at Langford Park in Jensen Beach opened in 2003. It's 15,000 square feet in size with a 3,000-square-foot street course that was added in 2011.
It has a 30-inch drop-in ramp, an earthquake gap, a grass gap, a manual pad with grind rail, a multilevel combo pad, straight and curved grind ledges, a 4-foot-tall taco and a hubba.
It's the only skate park in Martin County with a staff member present during specific hours of operation.

The skate park at Post Family Park in Indiantown opened in 2002 at 7,000 square feet. Since then, the skate park was renovated and all the equipment had been replaced, and it reopened in July 2024.
It's the only skate park in Martin County where skate cards aren't required.

FanDuel appears ready to sacrifice bettors on the altar of lower taxes
FanDuel appears ready to sacrifice bettors on the altar of lower taxes Last week, we talked about the new online sports betting tax in Illinois that would hit operators with a 25 cent fee for each of the first 20 million bets they take and a 50 cent fee for every bet after that -- and how those operators appeared ready to pass those fees on to customers. On Tuesday, FanDuel became the first operator to do just that. In response to the new Illinois tax (which followed a separate increase in 2024), FanDuel announced the addition of a 50-cent transaction fee for every bet by Illinois customers beginning Sept. 1, which is two months after the tax goes into effect on July 1 and, according to InGame, the month when the operator is likely to hit the 20-million bet threshold that triggers the 50-cent tax. FanDuel would effectively eat the first two months of the tax at 25 cents. "Should the state reverse its decision at any point in the future, FanDuel will immediately remove the $0.50 transaction fee," the statement said. If that doesn't make obvious what FanDuel is attempting to do -- use bettors to pressure lawmakers into retracting the new tax -- Flutter CEO Peter Jackson's words should: "We are disappointed that the Illinois Transaction Fee will disproportionately impact lower wagering recreational customers while also punishing those operators who have invested the most to grow the online regulated market in the state. We also believe the introduction of the Illinois Transaction Fee will likely motivate some Illinois-based customers to bet with unregulated operators." It's all right there. FanDuel isn't wrong that this transaction fee has the potential to push some customers to unregulated operators -- particularly if other regulated operators follow suit with their own fees -- but that can only happen if said operators are passing the fee to customers in the first place. Remember, this is originally a tax on the operator. Then again, that seems to be the point. Bettors are set to get the raw end of this deal, and FanDuel is doing its part to make sure lawmakers get the blame. Whether that's fair is a question for someone smarter than myself. I have no clue whether the new taxes actually are too exorbitant to expect operators to continue eating the costs. But that's obviously what they want us to believe, and they appear willing to sacrifice customers to prove as much -- because not everyone is going to care the reasons behind why a $1 bet is costing them $1.50. They'll just take their business elsewhere. After last year's Illinois tax increase, DraftKings announced its own plans for a surcharge that never actually saw the light of day after other operators didn't follow suit. This time, it's FanDuel putting its brand loyalty to the test in what feels like an attempt to make lawmakers to reverse course. But with three months before these transaction fees are set to hit customers, that pressure will eventually shift to FanDuel to follow through. The unfortunate part about this game of chicken between operator and government is that bettors are the ones caught between the headlights.

Convocation central: London's arena district braces for two mega-grads
Hockey jerseys out, grad gowns in. London's downtown arena, home to the national champion London Knights junior hockey team, will become convocation central for not just one, but both of London's post-secondary schools for the first time starting Monday. Thousands of graduates from Western University and Fanshawe College, and their guests, will converge on the downtown this month to receive their degrees and diplomas in ceremonies beginning with Western this week. 'From June 9 to 13, more than 6,700 graduates are expected to cross the stage during nine ceremonies, with more than 33,000 guests anticipated throughout the week,' Western spokesperson Marcia Steyaert wrote in an emailed statement. More than 8,000 graduates will join the school's more than 370,000 alumni, she added. Western has long held its convocation ceremonies at Alumni Hall on its campus, but is 'temporarily' relocating them to Canada Life Place to address 'space and accessibility challenges while maintaining a memorable and inclusive experience,' Steyaert said. Fanshawe College's spring convocation ceremonies are scheduled at the arena the following week, from June 16 to June 19. London-based Fanshawe, with three campuses in London and others in Simcoe, St. Thomas and Woodstock, has held its London convocation ceremonies at Canada Life Place, the former Budweiser Gardens, since 2022. Last spring, an estimated 5,000 graduates in Fanshawe-red gowns took part in the ceremonies over three days. Graduates are seated on the floor of the arena for the ceremonies and their guests in the venue's lower bowl. For an entertainment district accustomed to feeding off fans going to and from hockey games and concerts at the arena, graduations at Canada Life Place are still a relatively new but welcome boost for restaurants and other businesses nearby. 'Anything that they can do utilizing that arena, they should,' said Crystal Kendall, owner of the Early Bird restaurant on Talbot Street near the arena. 'I know a lot of us in the downtown area appreciate the added business, for sure.' Kendall said she's experienced a boost in the number of patrons from Fanshawe's previous convocation ceremonies and welcomes the added traffic. Across the street from Canada Life Place, at Forget Me Not Flowers & More in the Covent Garden Market, floral designer Val Denomme said she expects a busy couple of weeks for the shop and hopes Western's convocation will drive sales as Fanshawe's ceremonies have done. 'If it's as good as Fanshawe, it really makes us busy through the whole week,' Denomme said. 'We're definitely hoping it's going to make a big difference.' At the corner of King and Talbot streets, near the arena and the market, is the Saga board games and coffee cafe. Manager Ector Toledo-Huerta said traffic can be sporadic in his experience working during Fanshawe's convocation ceremonies, but the cafe is adding an extra worker in case it gets busy. 'We just kept an extra pair of hands to do with any possible extra business coming through,' he said. 'Usually, the morning during the weekdays (it's) manageable, but if suddenly there is a spike in business we need more people to work around.' The additional traffic and potential for extra business isn't lost on Western. The university has partnered with the downtown business association and graduates, along with their guests, can be on the lookout for 'signage, promotions and special offers,' Steyaert said. Steyaert said Western has also teamed up with London Transit to offer free rides between campus and Canada Life Place for graduates and guests who show their convocation ticket. bwilliams@ Error!
