Amazon set for launch of Starlink-rival satellites

After delaying an earlier attempt due to bad weather, Amazon is preparing to launch its first batch of Project Kuiper internet satellites on Monday, stepping into direct competition with Elon Musk's Starlink.
The mission, called Kuiper Atlas 1, is scheduled to lift off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 7:00 pm local time (2300 GMT), aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket that will carry 27 satellites into orbit.
Weather conditions appeared 75 percent favorable. Project Kuiper, a subsidiary of the online retail giant founded by Jeff Bezos, is playing catch-up with Starlink -- SpaceX's sprawling network of internet satellites that has reshaped the sector and handed Musk significant geopolitical clout.
The $10 billion initiative plans to deploy 3,200 satellites into low Earth orbit -- the region of space up to 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometers) above the planet -- with hopes of going live later this year.
Pricing has not yet been revealed, but Amazon has pledged it will align with its reputation as a low-cost retailer. With Monday's launch, Amazon will formally enter a crowded and fast-growing field that includes not just Starlink but other emerging players in the satellite internet race.
SpaceX launched the first batch of Starlink satellites in 2019 and now boasts more than 6,750 operational units, serving over five million customers worldwide -- by far the sector's dominant force.
Starlink has also provided crucial internet access in disaster and war zones, including Morocco after its devastating 2023 earthquake and on the frontlines in Ukraine's war against Russia.
Amazon plans to accelerate launches in the coming months and years, with more than 80 flights booked through United Launch Alliance (a Boeing-Lockheed Martin joint venture), France's Arianespace, Bezos's own Blue Origin, and even Musk's SpaceX.
Its satellites will gradually join the swelling ranks of low Earth orbit, alongside Starlink, Europe's OneWeb, and China's Guowang constellation.

The project utilises advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and has been developed in collaboration with the Chinese company Star Vision and the Omani company 'Oman Lens,' aboard a joint satellite between the Sultanate of Oman and the People's Republic of China. The project involves a group of BSA engineers in the design, development, and testing of advanced AI algorithms, which are being implemented on board a satellite operating in low Earth orbit. The project aims to build national capacity in the field of AI algorithm development, enhancing local competencies, stimulating continuous innovation, and consolidating the Kingdom's position as a regional hub for space innovation. These algorithms are dedicated to analysing satellite images in real time, detecting and identifying clouds, estimating their coverage in images, and then automatically replacing them with parts of previous images before transmitting the data to ground stations. This process improves the efficiency of space systems and enhances the quality of the extracted data, which is subsequently used in a variety of applications, such as urban planning, air and water quality monitoring, ship identification and location, and other space-based applications that provide valuable data to a wide range of public and private sector entities. Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Aseeri, CEO of the BSA, highlighted that the initiative stands as a major achievement for the organisation, reinforcing Bahrain's status as a frontrunner in the space sector following the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The project also underscores the BSA's international partnerships and the technical and scientific expertise of its staff, which have been instrumental in making this distinguished collaboration possible. Space Engineer Yaqoob Al Qassab noted that the project is among several initiatives designed to strengthen Bahrain's national expertise in developing and integrating AI algorithms with satellite systems. The technical team involved serves as the core of a dedicated Bahraini group focused on applying AI technology in space to support sustainable development goals. He also mentioned that the team is now engaged in a new collaborative project with the same partners, targeting the deployment of advanced algorithms for automated maritime vessel detection from space. This project marks the first Bahraini–Omani cooperation in the space sector, and represents the third Arab–Chinese space cooperation, following the Bahraini–Egyptian–Chinese collaboration on lunar projects. Telegram to get $300 mn in partnership with Musk's xAI

TDT | New York Telegram established a partnership with Elon Musk's xAI to provide the Grok generative artificial intelligence program on the messaging service for one year, Telegram's CEO announced yesterday. In exchange for implementing Grok across its platforms, Telegram will receive $300 million in cash and equity, plus 50 percent of the revenue from xAI subscriptions sold via Telegram, Telegram's chief Pavel Durov announced on X, the former Twitter. Grok will be accessible on Telegram this summer, Durov said. The terms of the deal may appear unbalanced, but the transaction allows xAI, which in late March acquired Musk's X platform, to have access to Telegram's customers, which Durov estimated has more than one billion users. Generative AI businesses have been aiming to grow their user base in order to recover revenues after huge investments in the stateof-the-art technology. Grok 3 is also going up against OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT -- pitting Musk against collaborator-turned-arch rival Sam Altman.
