Chelsea ask Liam Delap to put Club World Cup ahead of England

Telegraph2 days ago

Chelsea will ask Liam Delap to put the Club World Cup ahead of England in another club-against-country row this summer.
Delap is close to reuniting with Enzo Maresca after his £30 million release clause at Ipswich Town was met, but has also been preparing for the Under-21 Euros in Slovakia, where Lee Carsley's side will defend their title.
While Delap, 22, is desperate to play for England, Chelsea sources are expecting the club to request for him to be released – should he complete his move to Stamford Bridge – for Fifa's expanded club competition starting on June 14.
Delap was in the frame to start for Carsley in England's opener against Czech Republic on June 12, with further group-stage matches against Slovenia and Germany.
The Club World Cup in the United States, which will feature Lionel Messi, has priority over internationals and reflects the importance of the Fifa event, as historically precedence has been the other way around.
Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, questioned who pays the players' salaries when the Football Association requested Rico Lewis and James McAtee for the under-21 tournament, which overlaps with City's participation in the Club World Cup.
Neither were included in the original preparation camp for the finals, with McAtee now called into Carsley's squad but no agreement on Lewis.
Having won the 2022 European Under-19 Championship, also held in Slovakia, Delap had set his sights on another winners' medal after his breakthrough season in the Premier League.
He scored 12 goals during his rookie campaign in the top flight, with a number of clubs chasing his signature for his low release clause. Manchester United also wanted Delap, among others, but his preference was for Chelsea and working with Maresca, who had known from his time at Manchester City's academy.
Personal terms still need to be agreed for the deal to go ahead, with a medical scheduled for Monday if all negotiations go smoothly.
Delap's deal would start a busy summer in the striker market, with the Etihad graduate seen as offering attributes that other strikers of his age do not have. Dean Holden, who scouted Delap for Stoke City before a loan at the Bet365 Stadium, saw he was unlike other academy forwards.
'You can't compare anyone to [Alan] Shearer, but you can say that Liam isn't like your academy No 10-type forward who comes short for the ball. He wants to win at all costs,' Holden said.
Chelsea also have Reece James, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke called up to Thomas Tuchel's senior squad, with a friendly against Senegal on June 10 coming six days before Maresca's team have their tournament opener.

Svitolina saves match points to beat Paolini and reach French Open quarters

PARIS, June 1 (Reuters) - A determined Elina Svitolina battled from the brink of defeat to overcome last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini 4-6 7-6(6) 6-1 and reach the French Open quarter-finals after a thoroughly entertaining battle on Sunday. Victory came the hard way for Svitolina, who saved three match points in the second set to force a decider. She raised her level from there to earn a last-eight encounter with either 12th seed Elena Rybakina or defending champion Iga Swiatek. "I still can't believe this match finished my way, my head is still in it, in a big battle," said 30-year-old Ukrainian Svitolina, who shed tears of joy after the win. "Jasmine was playing really well and it was really tough. In the end, I'm happy I could stay composed and fight till the very end. Here I am in the next round. "I had to be aggressive, stay focused on my gameplan and take small opportunities to win the second set. It was one or two points that decided it and I'm pleased I could win it. In the third set I played really well to close the match." Fourth-seeded Paolini twice swapped breaks with Svitolina before holding to love in the ninth game of the match and pouncing to claim the opening set with a scorching forehand winner in the next game. The diminutive Italian grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second set but 13th seed Svitolina did not let her challenge fade on Court Philippe Chatrier as she recovered two breaks and saved two match points to make it 5-5 before forcing a tiebreak. The 29-year-old Paolini responded bravely after going 4-1 down and wasted another match point as Svitolina went on to level the contest and pump her fists to loud cheers, before using the momentum to get her nose in front in the decider. Svitolina pulled away by winning four games in a row before her opponent got on the board and she promptly completed the victory with a searing backhand winner to reach the quarter-finals of Roland Garros for a fifth time.

Duke of Sussex ‘asked Diana's brother if he should change his family name to Spencer'

Prince Harry asked Princess Diana's brother about changing his family name to Spencer, according to reports. During a rare visit to Britain, Prince Harry is said to have sought advice from his uncle Earl Spencer, about whether to assume his mother's surname. It would have meant dropping his current family name, Mountbatten-Windsor, which is used by his children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, three. The Duke, 40, was advised against the move by the Earl, 61, because of the legal hurdles, according to the Mail on Sunday. 'They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step', a friend of the Duke told the newspaper. Mountbatten-Windsor is the surname available to descendants of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. It combines the British Royal family's House name of Windsor and Prince Philip's adopted surname of Mountbatten. The Duke's apparent desire to abandon the name speaks to the growing rift with his family. An interview with the BBC last month, in which he made a series of comments about the Royal family, is understood to have deepened the divide between Buckingham Palace and the Duke and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. On their birth certificates, the couple's children are Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. However, it was revealed last year, they had started using 'Sussex' as the official surname for their children. The Royal family name of Windsor was confirmed by Queen Elizabeth II following her accession to the throne in 1952. But in 1960, the late Queen and then Duke of Edinburgh elected for their direct descendants to carry the name Mountbatten-Windsor. This meant that when the Queen's children needed to declare a surname, it would be Mountbatten-Windsor. Mountbatten-Windsor first appeared on an official document on Nov 14 1973 upon the marriage of the Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips.
