William Byron receives 4-year contract extension from Hendrick Motorsports
William Byron received a four-year contract extension from Hendrick Motorsports on Friday that will keep the 27-year-old driver with the team through the 2029 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Financial terms of the contract were not released.
The two-time Daytona 500 champion has emerged as one of the sport's most competitive drivers, having already earned 14 Cup Series wins and six consecutive playoff appearances from 2019 to 2024. He has won 13 Cup Series races since being paired with crew chief Rudy Fugle in 2021 — the second-highest total in the series over that span.
Now in his eighth season, Byron won this year's Daytona 500 for the second straight year, becoming the youngest multi-time winner in the event's storied history.
Byron, who grew up in Charlotte, currently ranks second in the Cup standings after 12 points-paying races.
"We've built something special with the No. 24 team," Byron said. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to continue working with amazing people at Hendrick Motorsports who believe in me, especially Mr. and Mrs. Hendrick. We've accomplished some great things that we're really proud of, but we have even bigger goals ahead. I'm excited to go after them with this team and this organization."
Byron first signed with Hendrick Motorsports when he was 18.
He earned Cup Series rookie of the year honors in 2018 and has become a factor in the Cup Series championship with six straight playoff appearances, including back-to-back Championship 4 appearances in 2023 and 2024. Byrson is the only driver to win in Hendrick Motorsports' iconic No. 24 Chevrolet other than Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon.

Byron will race Sunday at the Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR's longest race of the season.

LIV Golf Virginia: Anirban Lahiri charges to lead after stellar 64 in Round 2
GAINESVILLE, Va. — Although the spotlight is typically on Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau, and rightfully so, it was another Crushers GC player that charged to the top of the leaderboard on Super Saturday at LIV Golf Virginia. Anirban Lahiri, who has four runner-up finishes without a win on LIV Golf, shot a brilliant 7-under 64 to seize control of the individual leaderboard. The 37-year-old made seven birdies without a blemish on the scorecard. Lahiri made a 39-foot par putt on the 16th hole to salvage his momentum and converted another miraculous par on the 18th after having to get up-and-down from over 100 yards away in the rough. At 9-under par, they find themselves just two shots back of Lahiri. McDowell, who's never finished better than T5 in any LIV Golf event, shot a 5-under par with birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 17 to catapult himself up the leaderboard. Watson, captain of RangeGoats GC, made birdies on 17 and 18 before finishing with pars on Nos. 1 and 2 to finish his round. Kaymer has played steady golf all week and kept himself in the mix with a 67 after sharing the first-round lead with DeChambeau. McDowell, 47, Watson, 48, and Kaymer, 40, will all have a fantastic opportunity to challenge for their first LIV Golf win. Sovereignty, dominant among 3-year-olds, makes Triple Crown question an all-time 'what if' There's no doubt anymore about the best 3-year-old colt in horse racing. It's Sovereignty. And it's definitive. But is it fair to ask what might have been? Sovereignty, the Kentucky Derby winner who skipped the Preakness, was an authoritative winner of Saturday's Belmont, sweeping past favorite Journalism in the stretch to win, just like he did at Churchill Downs. That makes Sovereignty the rare horse who won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes but was denied the chance to be horse racing's 14th Triple Crown winner because he never contested the Preakness. Don't blame the horse. And don't even blame trainer Bill Mott. If anything, praise him. It's possible the conservative management of Sovereignty, giving him five weeks between races rather than pushing him to run in the Preakness just two weeks after the Derby, might have been the reason he navigated the 1 ¼ miles in 2:00.69, just a shade off the track record at Saratoga. And it could be why Sovereignty remains fresh and poised for a campaign to target the Travers Stakes, the Breeders' Cup Classic and perhaps the Dubai World Cup next spring, where he could run in front of owners who rule that country. But at the same time, it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. Sovereignty deserved a chance to be a Triple Crown winner because he's just that good of a racehorse, and he'll never have that opportunity again. It's going to forever remain an all-time horse racing 'what if?' 'If we wouldn't have won today, we would have taken a lot of criticism,' Mott said immediately after the race on Fox Sports. 'But it turned out good. A lot of times we make the wrong decision, but today it worked out well.' Of course, the other factor here is that the Belmont was run this year at 1 ¼ miles at Saratoga rather than Belmont Park's traditional 1 ½-mile configuration because the track is undergoing renovations. Even if Sovereignty had won all three Triple Crown races, it would have had an asterisk because of circumstances beyond his control. So maybe by choosing to skip the Preakness, Mott saved the entire sports world from a fruitless debate. But what's clear is that this crop of 3-year-olds is very good: Sovereignty, Journalism and Baeza were 1-2-3 in Louisville and 1-2-3 in New York, with Journalism taking advantage in the Preakness to get a classic victory on his résumé. That consistency is indicative of some very good racehorses that have the potential to continue their rivalry the rest of the year. But for now, there's no doubt about the best of them. Sovereignty reigns supreme.

Sovereignty wins 2025 Belmont Stakes, third and final leg of Triple Crown
Sovereignty has won the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday after narrowly edging out Journalism at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Sovereignty had 2/1 odds to win the race, which was ranked second among the field of eight horses. Since two different horses captured the first two crown jewels, the Triple Crown wasn't on the line entering Saturday's final leg, but Sovereignty won both of the legs they competed in: the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. The last horse to win the triple crown was Justify in 2018. Dornoch won the 156th edition of the race in 2024, closing as a 17-1 long shot and finishing with a time of 2:01.64. The Belmont Stakes traditionally runs at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, but it took place at Saratoga Race Course for a second consecutive year due to renovations at Belmont Park, which are projected to cost north of $400 million.
