Norris and Piastri take an unusually friendly F1 title rivalry to Norris' home turf

Washington Post8 hours ago

The history of Formula 1 shows how vying for the title can turn the friendliest of teammates into bitter rivals. But so far, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are making it work at McLaren.
As Norris heads to his home race at Silverstone, he's hoping fans at the British Grand Prix show his Australian teammate some love, too.

'F1': Lewis Hamilton and More Sports Stars Turned Movie Producers

Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton enters a new race this summer — as a movie producer chasing the box office crown. He speeds into multiplexes with 'F1 the Movie,' the high-octane blockbuster hopeful from his company Dawn Apollo Films and Apple Original Films. More from Variety Box Office: 'F1' Revs to $144 Million Globally, 'Lilo & Stitch' Nears $950 Million Milestone Brad Pitt's 'F1' Delivers Apple's First Box Office Hit With $55.6 Million Debut, 'M3GAN 2.0' Fizzles With $10 Million Box Office: 'F1' Leads the Pack With $25 Million Opening Day, 'M3GAN 2.0' Not So Fab in Fourth Place Debut For his recent Variety cover story with Apple's Tim Cook, Hamilton opened up about making the professional pivot. 'I grew up in a time where people really put you in a box, and it's like you can only do one thing,' Hamilton explained. 'When I was at school, I was very creative, and then when I got into racing, there was a lot that had to be suppressed or put to the side. And as I got older, I really started to have to create space to be able to tap into these different creative outlets, which I have found inspiring and have given me a lot more confidence.' Hamilton was closely involved in the making of the racing movie, which stars Brad Pitt and Damson Idris as drivers on a scrappy, underdog team chasing their first win on the Formula 1 circuit. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Joseph Kosinski, 'F1' was filmed during the 2023 and 2024 race seasons, meaning that Hamilton simultaneously managed his day job as a driver and a new career as the film's producer. 'I would often come to L.A. and be in Jerry's office, which was mad, or Joe's studio going through beat by beat the script, the dialog, the terminology that's authentic to racing drivers, switches, gear shift sounds you'll hear that are overlapping,' Hamilton recalled. 'I got to get involved in all that. And then we got [composer] Hans Zimmer on board, and we go to his studio and see him create. It's been an emotional roller coaster.' Hamilton isn't the first athlete to try his hand at producing scripted content — think LeBron James and his SpringHill Company or the late Kobe Bryant, who won an Oscar for best animated short — but his entrance on the scene underscores that audiences are invested in more than just football, basketball and baseball. Kartal kicks things off with a big Wimbledon upset

Brighton's Sonay Kartal gave Britain's massed ranks of singles players a great start to the Wimbledon fortnight by ousting 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko on day one. Ostapenko, a former semi-finalist back in 2018, defeated Kartal in Eastbourne last week in straight sets but the British number three delighted the sun-baked crowd on Court Three with a 7-5 2-6 6-2 victory. Advertisement It is Kartal's third best win by ranking of her career and her best at a grand slam, with the 23-year-old producing another strong performance at the All England Club after reaching the third round as a qualifier 12 months ago. Things did not begin well for Kartal, who was quickly 3-0 down and finding little answer to the power hitting of her Latvian opponent. Ostapenko had three set points at 5-4 after Kartal had retrieved the early break but the British player, ranked 51, held firm and took full advantage of her opponent's disappointment to make it five games in a row and win the opener. Ostapenko responded well to level the match but Kartal did not allow the contest to get away from her, breaking serve early in the decider and racing into a 5-0 lead. Advertisement Ostapenko's body language indicated she would be more than happy to get off the court and, although she rallied to win two games, Kartal served out the victory at the second time of asking. In the second round, Kartal will face Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova, who profited from Ons Jabeur's retirement.

Wimbledon 2025: Ons Jabeur appears to shed tears before retiring in first round due to injury

Ons Jabeur gets medical assistance during her match against Viktoriya Tomova at Wimbledon. (AP Photo/Kin Cheung) Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur has a history of success at Wimbledon. Jabeur reached the finals in consecutive years in 2022 and 2023, though never won the event. While she has yet to win it all, Wimbledon is her strongest Grand Slam. In 2025, however, Jabeur won't make it out of the first round. Advertisement The 30-year-old was forced to retire due to injury during her first-round matchup against Viktoriya Tomova on Monday. Jabeur appeared to shed tears before making the call to retire from the match. Jabeur required medical attention in the first set vs. Tomova. After just 26 minutes of play, Jabeur briefly had to leave the court and buried her head in a towel after returning. After being checked out, Jabeur returned to action, losing the first set 7-5. Jabeur remained on the court to try and play a second set, but fell behind 2-0 before retiring from the contest. This story will be updated.
