Juvenile Louth arsonist among gang of five who caused €81,000 damage to local authority home
A jury found the defendant guilty of arson and the case was back before Dundalk Circuit Court for sentencing.
He was one of five co-accused who caused more than €81,000 damage to a local authority house in Rathmullan Park on July 3, 2019. The house was effectively gutted.
There was no evidence as to who ignited petrol to start the blaze. The front and back doors had been set alight to make escape more difficult.
An adult male was awake downstairs and two teenagers upstairs. He raised the alarm and everyone got out.
The householder was not present at the time. She was left with only the clothes on her back and lost items of great sentimental value.
Using CCTV from various points throughout Drogheda investigators were able to track the movements of the five accused. The defendant was recognised by Gardaí.
Petrol and a lighter were bought at one stage. There was no CCTV of the incident.
The defendant had no previous convictions nor had he come to adverse attention since.
The court heard that he had a difficult childhood and been taken into care. His mother left and he had no contact with her. He had been misusing drugs.
It was the view of the Probation Service that he was at low risk of re-offending and that further supervision was not required.
Judge Dara Hayes said this was an attack on an occupied family home. Fortunately, the alarm was raised otherwise the consequences could have been more serious or fatal.
It was a joint enterprise of arson, a very serious offence. The defendant was a child at the time.
He was now employed and in a stable relationship.
Two of the co-accused had received custodial sentences, and two non-custodial.
The judge continued that an immediate custodial sentence was not appropriate in this case.
A five-year sentence was imposed, suspended for five years. The defendant must provide three further clear urinalysis tests.

Louth man threatened workers at gunpoint during robbery
Hayden Crosbie, Moneymore, Drogheda, received concurrent sentences of six years for robbery and three years for each of producing a handgun and making a threat to kill or cause serious harm stemming from the incident at Maxol, Donore Road, Drogheda. He had signed pleas of guilty. He was handed a further 21 months consecutive, the suspended portion of a previous sentence, after he failed to meet the conditions of the suspension. The defendant was apprehended after leaving a fingerprint at the scene of the robbery which occurred on October 8, 2024, just two months after his release from the other sentence. At 6.30am the driver was met by a Maxol employee and as the delivery was being unloaded they saw a man approach wearing a balaclava. His hood was up and he was pointing a gun at them. The female staff member panicked and shut a door, leaving the driver in a room with Mr Crosbie for a couple of seconds. She pressed a panic button. He was shouting, 'Give me the money' to which the other man replied, 'I'm the delivery guy'. Nonetheless, he pointed the gun at his knees before going through the door and pointing the gun at the woman. She showed him the tills from which he took approximately €500 and ran out. Det Gda Gerard Nixon who viewed CCTV footage of the incident on his arrival said that Crosbie held the gun in his right gloved hand. His left was ungloved. With this hand he touched the deli table. The scene was preserved and Forensics was able to lift a fingerprint off the table. The accused subsequently told investigators that he had a pellet gun. He didn't know where it was. He did this for drugs and out of fear. He owed money. "Sorry doesn't cut it. Of course I'm sorry. As far she knew it was a real gun.' There were 65 previous convictions, including for robbery, burglary, theft, endangerment, criminal damage and trespass. The woman made a Victim Impact Statement and said that she no longer felt safe. She was afraid it would happen again. "He aimed a gun at me and threatened to shoot my knees.' She endured flashbacks, panic attacks and couldn't sleep. She was on medication and said that the emotional impact would be felt for years to come. Regarding the other matter, the court heard that Hayden Crosbie, a father of twins, received a three-year, three-month sentence for a burglary and unauthorised taking of vehicles, the final 21 months suspended on condition of Probation Service supervision. A probation officer said that he missed six appointments. Judge Dara Hayes said that these were serious offences. The defendant, masked and gloved, produced a gun and pointed it the victims 'with great deliberation'. It was a significant step up from previous offending. The judge remarked there was no evidential basis to suspend any portion of the sentences which were backdated to when Mr Crosbie went into custody on January 10 last. Louth man smashed up car owned by ex partner's new boyfriend ‘in fit of rage'
Keith Shelbourne, Avenue One, Yellowbatter, Drogheda, came forward on a signed plea of guilty to a charge of criminal damage at Ellwood, Ballymakenny Road, Drogheda, on October 29, 2023. The car he targetted, a 2017 Audi A5, was written off by insurers. He handed over €10,000 compensation. The court heard that Mr Shelbourne and the lady had broken up. They had a child together. On this occasion he turned up at a house in the early hours of the morning after seeing her in a car with someone else. He began kicking the Audi and shouted for the other man to come outside. The defendant hit the car with a rock, smashing its windows. He used a child's scooter to smash the rest of the windows and break off the wing mirrors. All the while the victim was videoing the incident which was reported to Gardaí at 1.05am. Gda Dara Quinn said that Mr Shelbourne, who has no previous convictions, accepted that he smashed up the vehicle. He didn't express much remorse. The €25,500 vehicle was written off by the insurance company. The witness agreed with counsel that this occurred 'in a fit of rage'. There was no indication of any violence in the defendant's previous relationship, while the two men were not known to each other and had no further contact. The compensation was accepted. ADVERTISEMENT In a Victim Impact Statement, the man said that he had recently purchased the car. As a result of what happened he had to buy a cheap van to get to work. His insurance premium had more than doubled from €450 to €950. It was stated on behalf of the accused that he had shared access to his son and that the relationship with the boy's mother was amicable again. He wrote a letter of apology. He regretted the harm he caused. Mr Shelbourne was in full-time work and the sole carer for his mother who had suffered a stroke. It was a substantial amount of compensation for him to put together. He was willing to pay more. Judge Dara Hayes remarked that the context of this was a concern. "An attack on a former girlfriend's new boyfriend. I find that troubling and concerning. She's entitled to move on.' It was a particularly serious offence. Although the word had not been mentioned, he described it as jealousy, The judge said he would seek the guidance of the Probation Service and adjourned sentencing for a report on October 7.
