L.A. Times Owner Laughs Off Comments By Drew Pinsky About 'Disgusting' Way Paper Covered Him In 2021; Reporters Angry He 'Kept Quiet' During 'Unfair Attacks'
Los Angeles Times owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong is once again in hot water with his newsroom after he appeared on Dr. Drew Pinsky's podcast and didn't defend the past work of one of his reporters.
During a 90-minute discussion Tuesday that encompassed Mayor Karen Bass, the wildfires and their mutual admiration for RFK Jr's nomination for Health Secretary, Pinsky brought up on Ask Dr. Drew how the Times' covered his 2021 nomination to the commission that oversees L.A.'s Homeless Services Authority. Pinsky claimed that Times reporter Jaclyn Cosgrove never contacted him at the time, and called their coverage of him 'disgusting.'

Soon-Shiong appeared to laugh off his comments about Cosgrove, who uses they/them pronouns, and said this in response, 'I think you're right. You know, the unfairness of …and that was supposed to be a news report rather than opinion … and that's what I also think is wrong about media here. You have to be fair. And that's all you ask, right? Fair and honest. And to call you on some of these things.'

On Wednesday, members of the L.A. Times Guild Unit Council sent this letter to Soon-Shiong.
'In 2021 our colleague Jaclyn Cosgrove was tasked with writing articles about the nomination of Dr. Drew Pinsky to the commission that oversees the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. Those articles quoted Pinsky extensively, as you can see from the stories.'
'Following their publication, Pinsky and podcast host Adam Carolla repeatedly attacked Cosgrove on Carolla's show. Carolla called Cosgrove a 'fucking coward' and the two launched various other insults at Cosgrove. The attacks led to a barrage of harassment from Pinsky's followers. As Cosgrove explained in an email to the company at the time: 'I've been called a bitch, a coward, a liar, a chicken shit, a liar and … I'm probably forgetting some. Cosgrove reported the harassment to several people at the company including Jeff Glasser, Shelby Grad, John Canalis and HR.'
'Yesterday, you went on Pinsky's show, Ask Dr. Drew, and Pinsky again raised the articles. He said he 'had been waiting for this for a long time' and again named Cosgrove. He said falsely that Cosgrove never called him for comment. He called the reporting 'disgusting' and said he had called Cosgrove and told them to 'do your damn job.''
The unit council's letter went on to say that 'Pinsky's false comments, and your apparent support for them, invite further harassment of our colleague … We are asking for a public statement making it clear that Pinsky's comments were false and for the company to offer its support for Cosgrove, who was doing their job as a journalist for the Los Angeles Times. The owner of the Los Angeles Times should not support – or keep quiet during – unfair attacks on his own employee.'
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Times also released this to Deadline: 'On his show Ask Dr. Drew, Dr. Drew Pinsky asserted that the Los Angeles Times had published a story about his nomination to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority in 2021 without calling him or asking him any questions, and suggested that the reporting was not fair. That is not accurate. The Times did interview him for the story, and he was quoted extensively in the published article. We encourage anyone who is concerned about the fairness of the story to read it themself.'

In October, the paper made national news — while some of its own staffers quit — after Soon-Shiong informed his editorial board that the Time would be making no endorsement in the presidential race. The Times had endorsed a candidate in each cycle since 2008 and, according to CJR, was planning to endorse Kamala Harris until the owner nixed the practice.
Soon-Shiong referenced that decision during Pinsky's podcast on Tuesday. 'I mean the decisions we made in regard to the non-endorsement on Kamala, nobody's called me on that but made assumptions and then you make assumptions and then you make opinions based on your assumptions, and then you just keep them going. And then you call that news … We've got to stop that.'

Miguel Uribe Turbay, a senator part of Colombia's center-right Centro Democrático party, was attacked on Saturday, June 7, while in the Fontibón neighborhood of the country's capital Bogotá. A 15-year-old, who was carrying a Glock-style pistol, has since been arrested, according to CNN and the BBC, both of which cited the local attorney general's office. Colombia's president Gustavo Petro said during a television appearance later that day that it wasn't clear if the teen was acting alone, per The New York Times. According to an update shared on X by Turbay's wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, the senator was "fighting for his life" following the shooting. She thanked his supporters for their "solidarity" and "prayers" in a later statement on Sunday, June 8, writing that updates about his health would be shared by the hospital. 'He came out well from the surgery,' his wife later told reporters, per CNN, which cited the Agence France-Presse (AFP). 'He fought the first battle and fought it well. He is fighting for his life.' Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, the hospital where Turbay was admitted, announced in a statement on June 8 that the politician was treated with procedures on his head and his left thigh and remains in intensive care. The hospital called his condition "extremely serious." The BBC reported that Turbay was shot three times on June 7, including twice in the head. Turbay was speaking to supporters at the park over the weekend when loud bangs rang out. He fell to the ground after appearing to be shot from behind, according to widely shared footage from the scene. Later footage showed supporters assisting and carrying the presidential candidate, who appeared to be covered in blood, as he was placed near the hood of a white car. At least three other people were also shot at the park, including a 20-year-old man, a 36-year-old woman and a 15-year-old, the Secretaría de Salud de Bogotá said. Bogota Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán said on June 8, per CNN, that Turbay has since entered 'the critical hours' of recovery following his own procedures. President Petro added during his broadcast on June 7 that "no resource should be spared" when tracking down those responsible for the shooting. "Not a single peso," he said, per the Times, adding that Turbay's security would be investigated for protocol failures. Eyewitness Victor Mosquera told reporters outside of the hospital that he was near the senator during the shooting and still had blood on his clothing while outside of the hospital, per the Times. 'Everyone was screaming and running,' he said, adding, "When I turned around, I saw Miguel lying next to me.' Pedro Sánchez, Colombia's defense minister, has since announced on X that a reward is being offered of up to 3 billion Colombian pesos — roughly $728,000 — for more information. Letters to the Editor: Don't get distracted by the President Trump-Elon Musk breakup circus
To the editor: Really, Los Angeles Times? Why would you put an argument between President Trump and Elon Musk, who are behaving like 8-year-olds, on the front page when these two men don't give a hoot about the American people (''Have a nice day, DJT!': Trump's breakup with Musk devolves into a war of insults,' June 5)? Outside of this feud, there's the unnecessary deportations of men, women and children; the destruction of USAID and the resulting starvations; and the unnecessary firing of thousands of federal employees with the excuse of cleaning up fraud and abuse (but actually accomplishing very little). I could go on and on. But personally, I think this argument is just another tactic by Trump and Musk to distract us from the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' and the looming loss of medical insurance for millions of Americans. Sheryl Kinne, Van Nuys .. To the editor: While the feud between Musk and Trump has a train wreck-like appeal, we forget that the world is also watching. This high school showdown is foolish and irresponsible, but the blame lies directly with the Republican Party.
