Former STV newsreader set for international competition
Sophie Wallace, a journalist and PR account manager from Glasgow, is hoping to become the second Scot in recent history to win a prestigious beauty competition.
The 27-year-old model will compete against more than 40 hopefuls for the title of Miss International UK at a ceremony at the Parr Hall in Warrington on Saturday, May 17.

The winner will represent the United Kingdom in a three-week competition in Tokyo in November.
Sophie, who was previously listed on the Young Women's Movement 30-under-30 list, has committed her platform to advocacy work.
The former newsreader has campaigned for gender equality in the media, as well as tackling fuel poverty through her not-for-profit organisation Helping Hats.
She has also raised more than £300 for A-Sisterhood, a charity which strives to empower, support, and protect women worldwide.
On Thursday, May 8, she will be holding a charity pub quiz in aid of A-Sisterhood at Connolly's Irish Bar in the Merchant City.
She will also be taking part in a sponsored Munro climb on Sunday, May 11.

"I've loved every minute of getting behind causes I care about and showing off just how special our city really is."
This year marks the third time that Sophie Wallace has contested for the title, having first been shortlisted as a finalist in 2020 and placing in the top eight in 2024.

Sophie said: "Although this is only my second time competing on stage for the title of Miss International UK, this is the third time I've held the title of Miss Glasgow International.
"I was first shortlisted as a finalist in 2020, however during the Covid pandemic I decided to focus on my role as a journalist, dedicating my time to telling the stories of people doing life-changing work in their communities.
"It's their passion and commitment to making a positive change in our communities that still inspires me in everything I do.
"This journey is about representing something bigger than myself, and to carry their stories and values with me on a global platform would be the greatest honour."

Representation, she says, is front and centre. '100%. When I watched the show last year, seeing girls like Whitney made a difference,' Alima told us. 'If I can be that person this year, it could give confidence to others who might want to go on the show in the future. Representation really matters.' Alima, who describes her hair plans as 'glueless wigs - closures instead of frontals,' is stepping into the ITV2 spotlight following in the footsteps of fan favourite love island star Whitney Adebayo, who starred on the 10th series joining as a bombshell. And it turns out Whitney's already showing love for her fellow Islander. 'I actually didn't know that - this is the first time I'm hearing it!' she said when told of Whitney's online support. 'I follow her and absolutely loved her journey. As another dark-skinned woman, I could really relate. Maybe she supports me because she knows what I might be going through.' The support from her circle has also been overwhelming, with her family cheering her on from the sidelines. 'Everyone's buzzing! Friends and family are super excited. My mum was especially excited - taking pictures and everything when she dropped me at the airport!' And while Love Island's latest season is already making headlines - ITV bosses recently confirmed they won't shy away from showing sex on screen if it happens - Alima admits she is 'going to stay true to myself.' 'On the outside, I don't really do that kind of thing, so I don't think I'll be getting up to much in the villa either.' That down-to-earth energy is exactly what fans are already loving. Alima, who says she's 'not really anxious' about how she'll be perceived as a Black woman on the show, is focused on being authentic. 'Seeing girls like Whitney and Mimii [Ngulube] last year who were themselves and came across amazing gave me confidence,' she added. 'I want to be fully myself, regardless of stereotypes.' Welsh star opens new local skatepark in Cardiff
A new 'destination' skatepark has opened in Llanrumney, with Dirty Sanchez' Matthew Pritchard cutting the ribbon at the long awaited facility and taking the first skate. Plans for the project were first announced by Cardiff Council three years ago as part of the council's Skateboard Amenities project that will see the city filled with new skateparks across the city over the next ten years, subject to funding. Work started on the new park in December 2024 and finally opened today - Friday, June 6. The East Side park in Llanrumney, next to the Eastern Leisure Centre, has multiple obstacles including ledges, rails, hubbas, manual pads, stairs, banks as well as a quarter pipe making it both fun and challenging for those looking to learn or hone their skating skills. The local skateboard community worked with consultants, VDZ+A and Newline Skateparks, to design the 1,000m2 skatepark. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here It has been designed to be suitable for skaters of all ages and abilities, and is built from concrete, providing a higher quality, lower maintenance and lower noise facility than the old timber-framed skatepark it replaces. Dirty Sanchez star and Welsh skateboarder, Matt Pritchard joined skaters to open the facility. He said: "It's what we need in Cardiff. I'm 52 now, and when I first started skateboarding, we had nothing in Cardiff, so to have facilities like this is amazing. "It's really good for the kids as well, especially now that skateboarding is in the Olympics and is being taken seriously. Fair play to Cardiff Council, they've done an amazing job, and it's nice to see them investing in skateboarding in Cardiff." Cabinet member for culture, parks and events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, said: "This is the first skate park to be built as part of our new skateboard strategy and it's already proving to be a real hit with the city's skate community. "The skate scene in Cardiff is really vibrant and diverse – you've got young children and teenagers, all the way through to older skaters who are now introducing their own kids to what is now an Olympic sport. William and Sophie sample gin during rare joint outing
The Prince of Wales sipped gin with the Duchess of Edinburgh when the pair made a rare official outing together. William and Sophie touched paper cups and said 'cheers' as they sampled the drink at the Royal Cornwall Show – the prince's first visit as the Duke of Cornwall. The pair were mobbed by crowds at the event at Whitecross, Wadebridge near Bodmin, who wanted selfies with William and to shake their hands. The prince and duchess tried Saint Sithney Cornish gin and afterwards William described it as 'very light'. They also sampled the prince's favourite tipple, cider, and as the alcohol consumption mounted William joked about stronger spirits: 'I've been caught out with whisky a few times – I think I can do it, then it catches you out.' The pair spent the first few moments touring food stalls and stopped at jellies, jams and other produce made by the husband and wife team Wendy and Andy Knight from Home Farm Cornwall. William spread some spicy pumpkin chutney onto a piece of popadom, after asking for something 'not too hot' and quipped: 'When anyone says a little bit of spice – it's quite hot.' But he approved of the taste: 'Yummy, really good, there's definitely a bit of spice.' The prince knew what he wanted when they visited the Rattler Cornish Cider stall and turned down an offer of an alcohol free drink, saying he '(needed) the real stuff, cannot drink zero' and asked for the 'original'. He told Laura Clerehug who was manning the stand that 'everyone remembers their first Rattler' and after taking a drink, said: 'Needs a bit of ice in it, like a bit of ice.' During his tour of the show, William was intrigued by a robot dog-like device being developed by the University of Plymouth that can test the biodiversity of agricultural land, with farmers from William's Duchy of Cornwall participating in the research. He quipped 'what will the sheep make of that – dogs hate it I'm sure' – and watched as it rolled on to its back like a real canine. In the Duchy of Cornwall hub marquee, a large number of mental health charities and organisations working in Cornwall had been gathered and he chatted intently to the representatives. Husband and wife Serena and Elliott Jolly founded Sunrise Cornwall, after Mrs Jolly's younger brother committed suicide, to provide safe spaces for bereaved family and friends to talk and share their experiences. Gesturing around to the other organisations, William suggested to the couple they all 'find a way to help each other out, the synergy will make a greater impact, I hope that's something you can talk about'.
