Bee sting caused Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband Sunjay Kapur's death? When bees can trigger a heart attack
In a tragic and startling incident,
Sunjay Kapur
— the Indian automotive tycoon and Chairman of Sona Comstar — passed away in England during a polo match, reportedly after swallowing a bee. He was in his 50s. Kapur, also known as the former husband of Bollywood actress
Karisma Kapoor
, suffered a
heart attack
following the incident, according to business consultant Suhel Seth, who confirmed his demise to ANI. The cardiac arrest, which was reportedly caused by the
bee sting
, might have triggered a wave of curiosity, with over 2 lakh searches for "Sunjay Kapur" recorded in the past 14 hours on Google Trends.
The alarming detail is that a bee sting may have played a role in the cardiac event, raising an important question: Can swallowing a bee really cause a heart attack?
What happens to the body during a bee sting?
According to a report by the University of Melbourne, bees have a venom sac and a barbed stinger that act as defence mechanisms when they feel threatened. Once a bee stings, it injects venom into the skin, often leaving behind the stinger. This venom is a potent mixture of proteins and molecules that can cause pain, swelling, itching, and irritation in most people.

While a single sting generally results in minor local effects, some individuals develop severe allergic reactions to the venom, leading to a condition known as
anaphylaxis
— a potentially life-threatening immune response. The report notes that it is not the venom alone but the body's allergic overreaction that typically causes serious complications like life-threatening issues and hospitalisation.
Could swallowing a bee trigger a heart attack?
Swallowing a bee might seem like an unlikely hazard, but experts say it's not unheard of, especially during outdoor summer activities. Dr. Bobbi Pritt, a microbiologist and pathologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, explains that while most bugs are digested without issue, insects capable of stinging or biting, such as bees, wasps, and fire ants, pose significant risks if swallowed.

Ingesting such insects could lead to internal stings, for example, in the throat, triggering allergic reactions that escalate quickly. For individuals with allergies, this can cause hives, facial and throat swelling, breathing difficulty, and even sudden cardiac arrest if not treated promptly. Dr. Pritt warns that in such cases, the absence of immediate intervention, like an epinephrine injection, can prove fatal.
First aid for a bee sting
Bee stings typically result in the bee leaving its stinger behind. The reports of the University of Melbourne advise removing the sting within 30 seconds to reduce venom exposure. The most effective method is to scrape it off using a firm edge, such as a credit card or a fingernail. Applying a cold pack may relieve pain and swelling for mild reactions. However, if stung near the throat or if symptoms such as dizziness, wheezing, or difficulty breathing occur, immediate medical attention is essential.

NEET-PG 2025: Shashi Tharoor urges JP Nadda to allot extra exam centres in Kerala; says available seats 'exhausted within minutes'
Shashi Tharoor & JP Nadda (File photos) NEW DELHI: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor , who is also the Lok Sabha MP from Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, wrote to Union heath minister JP Nadda on Saturday, urging his immediate intervention in authorising additional centres for NEET-PG aspirants in the coastal state. Tharoor said the medical exam students were unable to choose any city within Kerala as the available seats were "exhausted within minutes of the website reopening". Highlighting that National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) already has data on number of applicants in Kerala, Tharoor said it would be "unfair to restrict the number of centres in the state and put the candidates through distress, inconvenience, and financial burden by forcing them to travel to other states for the exam". "Dear @JPNadda Candidates from Kerala appearing for the NEET-PG 2025 exam are unable to choose any city within the state as their test city, as the available seats were exhausted within minutes of the website reopening. As NBEMS already has data on the number of applicants from Kerala, it is unfair to restrict the number of centres in the state and put the candidates through distress, inconvenience, and financial burden by forcing them to travel to other states for the exam. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo I hope you will intervene immediately to help these candidates by authorising additional centres without delay. Albertans to pay out-of-pocket for COVID-19 vaccines under new provincial plan
The Government of Alberta will roll out a four-phase COVID-19 immunization program, shifting vaccine costs to residents, except for select vulnerable groups. The province says this marks a shift from federal to provincial responsibility, aiming to reduce waste and manage costs. But critics, especially from the NDP , have blasted the change as 'callous' and 'anti‑science.' Why the shift? Ottawa procured COVID‑19 shots since December 2020. Now, provinces are tasked with doing that, just as they handle flu shots. Alberta ordered about 500,000 doses this year, far fewer than last, for roughly $49 million. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold Container Homes in National Capital Region - Prices You Won't Believe! Shipping Container Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo Officials observed more than 1 million doses were wasted last season, over half of its order, equating to roughly $135 million in unused inventory. The province estimates each dose costs about US$ 110, based on US Centers for Disease Control data. Although the final price won't be announced until closer to rollout, residents in phases 3 and 4 will likely pay around that much. Live Events The four stages of the program The program unfolds in four stages: Phase 1 : Free for seniors in supportive living and home‑care clients. Phase 2 : Free for immunocompromised individuals, those with chronic conditions, residents in congregate settings, people on programs like AISH or income support, and the homeless. Pha se 3: People aged 65+ pay full cost. Phase 4 : All other Albertans must pay full cost. Importantly, vaccines will no longer be available at pharmacies, only through public health clinics. Residents can 'signal intent' via the provincial booking system, with appointments opening in early October. Sarah Hoffman, NDP minister for health, reacted sharply: 'It's cruel for the UCP government to put further financial burdens on Albertans who want to protect their health and their loved ones' adding it's 'dangerous… callous… anti‑science' and that the government should promote vaccines instead. Meanwhile, Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health, defended the move: it reflects a 'fiscally responsible' approach to align supply with demand, reduce waste, and prioritize high-risk individuals. Alberta still covers routine vaccines, including flu, measles, and HPV, but COVID‑19 now moves toward a more market‑driven model. Variant‑updated mRNA vaccines remain recommended for those aged 6 months and up, particularly seniors, the immunocompromised, and Indigenous people, who qualify for biannual doses until April 17, 2025.
