It's not really a surprise that Middlesbrough are looking for a new manager, but what is surprising is the timing of the decision to sack Michael Carrick.
It's nearly five weeks since Boro finished 10th in the Championship, four points off the play-off positions, confirming the Teessiders to a ninth successive season in the second tier.
Carrick guided Boro to the play-offs in his first season but has missed out in the last two seasons and after finishing with fewer points than the previous campaign, coupled with having to watch their local rivals, Sunderland, get promoted, the decision was made to remove the ex-Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder.
Assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also left the club, so it is a chance for a clean sweep at the Riverside.

Tried and Tested Promotion Winners Wanted
Steve Cooper was the initial favourite installed by betting sites, but he's already been ousted as attentions turn to former Luton boss Rob Edwards.
He has been out of work since he was sacked by the Hatters in January with the side just two points above the Championship relegation zone, but that shouldn't overshadow the amazing job he did in taking them up to the Premier League.
He guided the side to a play-off final win over Coventry City in May 2023 to see them back in the top-flight for the first time in 30 years, and Middlesbrough would be love to be celebrating that this time next year.
Edwards is 7/4 to be the next Middlesbrough manager, but if they do want him then they may face competition with Bristol City also reportedly interested. Edwards has also been installed as the even-money favourite to be the Robins boss.
Cooper is next on the list in the next Middlesbrough manager betting market and reports in the north-east suggest he's been shortlisted for an interview.
He is another manager who has achieved promotion from the Championship, taking Nottingham Forest up in May 2022. He has been out of work since leaving Leicester in November, but he has admitted he is ready to return to management, albeit with a preference to work abroad.
Some betting sites have cut Sean Dyche's odds to 3/1, but there's been no mention of the ex-Everton boss being in the frame in local reporting, despite the success he enjoyed at this level as Burnley manager.
Another name linked is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who was the favourite for the Southampton job before Will Still was named manager last month.
He guided Wednesday to 12th in the league last season and with everything currently going on at the club, who have been charged with multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to unpaid wages, he might be looking for an escape route.
Rohl is also on the shortlist to be the next Leicester City boss, according to reports, and is as short as 1/2 for that position on certain betting apps.
Boro Could Consider Challinor
Of those contenders with double-figure prices, talk of a move for 10/1 shot Robbie Keane has been dismissed, but there's a possibility the Tessiders talk to ex-Boro midfielder Gary O'Neil, who is out of work after leaving Wolves last season and is a 16/1 chance.
A new name on the list is Stockport manager Dave Challinor, who has done an outstanding job with the League One side, taking them from the National League up to League One in three seasons. The Hatters reached the League One play-offs last season before they were beaten in the semi-finals by Leyton Orient.
He has also achieved promotion from the National League North with Fylde and promotion back to the EFL with Hartlepool United so he has had success wherever he has been.
Football betting sites are offering 20/1 on him to make the move to the Riverside Stadium but it is nice to see the former Tranmere Rovers and Stockport defender finally getting some recognition.

Airdrie have point to prove after last season's relegation scare, says Frizzell
The Diamonds had a nightmare campaign last term Airdrie captain Adam Frizzell knows the spotlight will be on his team this season, and admits they have a point to prove after their play-off scrap. But the former Killie midfielder reckons with a bit of recruitment the Diamonds will be riding high in next season's Championship. Frizzell says it's an interesting league, with St Johnstone and Ross County coming down from the Premiership and Arbroath promoted from League One. But he says Airdrie finished the season strongly enough that they can look ahead with confidence. Frizzell said: 'St Johnstone and Ross County will be two teams that will be fancying themselves to win it, and it's very exciting. 'There are a few teams that it will be interesting to see how they pan out this year, and I think everyone will be looking at us as one of those teams as well, coming back off the back of a poor season, by our standards. 'But I think we finished the season strong, getting through the play-offs was massive for us, and the boys should take a good bit of confidence, going into the pre-season and tackling the Championship next season.' When asked if Airdrie have a point to prove, Frizzell said: 'Definitely. A lot of people had us written off. Whatever happened with Hamilton happened, and we can't do anything about that, but we took advantage of that and managed to stay in the division. 'We still did incredible to claw ourselves back into a position where Hamilton's deduction had any bearing on us – people forget we had five points at the turn of the year. 'We finished the season well, and you just need to look to take that into next season, it's all you can do.' Frizzell says recruitment is key for Airdrie this summer. He added: 'I think we need a wee bit, but not much. 'I think a couple of good additions, rather than loads of different ones. 'There was a big turnover last season and there will probably be similar this year, but not on as big a scale. 'With a couple of additions we'll be good, and definitely pushing in the right side of the table. 'I think this season will be very good for us, the boys will have learned a lot. 'We managed to come through it unscathed in the end, which is brilliant, and it's a very young team with a lot of learning to do. 'But with a couple of good additions, and the core we have already, I think it's an exciting year ahead for us, really.'

Despite that the Brentford boss believes he's blessed to be in charge at the Gtech Community Stadium, hailing the environment he'd worked in. He previously told Sky Sports: "I may be in one of the best football jobs in the world. I mean that because the work environment is so good, the owner is so good, it's such a good environment. Everything is top. Do you want to try something different in the future? That's the thing. Maybe, but it's not like I need to try something bigger or better. Because what is better? I'm definitely very ambitious and I think I can achieve everything I want to with Brentford." Frank has enjoyed huge continuity and loyalty from the Bees. Even during periods where results have gone against them the club's bosses has kept faith with their man in the dugout. Tottenham and Levy have proved to be a much more ruthless environment. The club are eyeing another new manager with Postecoglou, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte shown the door in recent years. Both Nuno and Conte have gone on to enjoy success since. Jose Mourinho was famously sacked before a cup final and Tottenham have shown that even trophies will not supersede league form by sacking the former Celtic boss - a move which has proved hugely divisive.

They need to act now and get someone in who can put some fire in the bellies of the players and get the Tartan Army back behind the team. This just can't go on any Time for change. Clarke sticking with players who are not good enough. I don't like managers being sacked but his time is up. Should have gone after Euros. Time for some fresh Scotland looked like an ageing team coming to the end of their cycle. Clarke has to realise its time up for Grant Hanley and the Kieran Tierney/Andy Robertson set-up is done. A younger injection was needed after the last Euros. I see no chance of reaching the World A game that should not have been played. Tired players who needed a break forced to play meaningless games. When Clarke spoke of players being injured did it not dawn on him that they are all needing a break? Some players will be resuming training for their clubs in a fortnight. Stupid and pointless exercise playing those games. The SFA are pathetic and are short-changing the Very disappointing and uninspiring. We need to find a way to attack far more effectively as we look toothless. As for the defending and goalkeeping - don't get me started. Only saving grace is we tend to be far better in qualifying matches than the dreaded friendlies.
