Thunder storm past Timberwolves in WCF, punch ticket to NBA Finals
The Oklahoma City Thunder looked as dominant as ever after closing out the Timberwolves 4-1 in the Western Conference Finals, trip to NBA Finals awaits.

NEW YORK — It was always going to be on defense.
For the New York Knicks to stave off elimination, to get back in this Eastern Conference finals, they needed to somehow curb the Indiana Pacers. New York, for at least one game Thursday night, did exactly that, becoming the first team this postseason to hold Indiana to fewer than 100 points for a 111-94 victory.
The question for the Knicks now becomes whether this is something that can be replicated — whether Game 5 revealed a blueprint they can use to even the series at three games apiece.
'In this series, we haven't lacked scoring, it has been more about us not stopping them from scoring,' Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns said after the game. 'I think tonight we did a great job of upping the pressure and making sure we were making it more difficult for them to get open looks and get those shots that they got comfortable with last game. It's a testament to our team answering the call.'
From the tip, New York harassed Indiana's starters, flying around the court and swarming. New York held the Pacers' starters to just 13 made field goals on 33.3% shooting. Forward Pascal Siakam was the only starter to reach double-figures in scoring, and he recorded just 15 points. Indiana's entire first five combined for 37 points; its bench poured in 57.
Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, who was coming off a historic 32-point, 15-assist, 12-rebound triple-double in Game 4, was limited to eight points and six assists on 2-of-7 shooting. In fact, Aaron Nesmith (eight attempts), Andrew Nembhard (eight), Obi Toppin (10) and Benedict Mathurin (10) all attempted more shots than Haliburton did.
While wing defenders Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby led the defensive charge — particularly on Haliburton — another player not known for his defense also stepped up. Throughout this series, point guard Jalen Brunson had been a target for Indiana, which often set up pick-and-rolls to attack Brunson, who vowed after Game 5 to amp up his effort on defense.
'We picked up our intensity a little bit,' Brunson told reporters after the game. 'We paid attention to detail better as a team. The little things go a long way.'
Little things like showing harder when Indiana tried to get Haliburton open in space, clogging the lanes he normally would have used to drive. Little things like sprinting back on transition defense to take away Indiana's outlet passes and throw-ahead opportunities.
'They were just more aggressive than us from the jump,' Siakam said. 'They brought the fight to us and I just don't think we brought it enough.
'It was all about will and energy.'
Ahead of Game 6 Saturday in Indianapolis, the Pacers will tweak their operation and make adjustments. For example, coach Rick Carlisle said, 'there's more things I'm going to have to do to help' Haliburton get easier attempts to shoot.
But this was the very best version of the Knicks. When their defensive effort is like it was Thursday, it feeds other facets of their game.
They're able to generate turnovers and increase their own output in transition, which leads to a barrage of points in the paint — an area where New York bullied Indiana 60-34. That increased effort manifests on the glass, too, where New York claimed a +9 advantage. That, then, feeds second-chance points, where the Knicks outscored the Pacers by a margin of 13-7.
'We're going to have to be even better next game,' Towns said, 'if we expect to have our season continue.'

Timberwolves Get Major Update on Julius Randle, Naz Reid Future
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Minnesota Timberwolves are coming off their second straight defeat in the Western Conference Finals as they enter the offseason. Minnesota just hasn't been able to get over the hump in recent years, and it could see them potentially make some changes this offseason. More NBA news: Raptors, Grizzlies Listed Among Surprising Trade Partners For Giannis Antetokounmpo The Timberwolves have a few crucial players entering into free agency, so the front office has some work to do. Forward Julius Randle, Naz Reid, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker are the main players that Minnesota has to consider. Randle and Reid can both opt out of the final years of their deals, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker is simply an unrestricted free agent. Minnesota would love to keep all three, but financially, it likely isn't possible. After the elimination, insider Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic provided a big update on the future of the players. According to Krawczynski, the Timberwolves may only be able to keep two of the three players. "Given the salary cap constraints, it seems likely that the most realistic path forward is for the Wolves to retain two of those three players. Alexander-Walker was one of the biggest bargains in the league this season at $4.3 million and is due a significant raise this summer." More Photo byThe Timberwolves have valued depth and size across the roster over the past two years. Each of these players gives them the ability to be switchable on defense, while providing them with enough offense as well. The priorities for the Timberwolves will likely be Randle and Reid, but Minnesota also needs wing depth to keep going strong. Alexander-Walker is going to be getting a large pay increase on the open market, so it could see him bolt the team. But the Timberwolves will see how expensive it will be to keep the others around as well. Randle fit in nicely alongside star Anthony Edwards, and Minnesota paid a big price to land him in a trade last offseason. Reid has been solid for Minnesota, but his inconsistency at times could see the Timberwolves let him walk. The veteran also mentioned in his end-of-the-year press conference that he views himself as a starter, and that could complicate things a little. Either way, it seems that Minnesota will do what it needs in order to keep the majority of the team around. But as with any club, sometimes that means a key player does become the odd man out. Knicks vs. Pacers odds, predictions: Back Tyrese Haliburton to cook Knicks
The Eastern Conference finals continue Saturday after the New York Knicks secured a 111-94 Game 5 win over the Indiana Pacers, forcing the series to be extended. The Pacers will have another chance to reach the NBA Finals, and this time at home. With that in mind, I see two wagers that have value right now. Let's dive into it. Knicks @ Pacers The Knicks head to Indiana fresh off a Game 5 win at home, where they controlled the game from start to finish. The Pacers, still leading the series 3-2, are looking to close out the Knicks in Game 6. While it's not a must-win game for Indiana, I expect it to come out with its best effort to end the series at home. In Game 5, the Pacers' starters struggled to get going, with all players finishing well below their averages. Tyrese Haliburton managed only eight points, Andrew Nembhard scored six, Myles Turner had six and Aaron Nesmith, who played just 16 minutes, totaled just three points. Pascal Siakam was the only starter to score over 10 points, finishing with 15 in over 34 minutes. On defense, the Knicks played like they had to win, knowing their season was on the line, but I'm wagering on this game as if the Pacers will play with that "win or go home" mentally. The Pacers are 6-1 in covering the first quarter at home during the postseason and are 3-0 off a loss. The only close first quarter came in Game 3 against Cleveland when the Cavs, facing a 2-0 series deficit, desperately needed to win Game 3. Given the poor stats from the Indiana starters, teams that are coming off of a poor performance often start fast in the next game. We can go back to Game 4 to make that point. The Pacers lost 106-100 in the previous game and beat the Knicks by eight points in the following first quarter. The Knicks have also been a poor starting team in the postseason. Out of 22 playoff games, they've only covered the first-quarter spread seven times—four of those after a loss. PICK: Pacers (-1) to lead by more than one point after the first quarter Tyrese Haliburton Over 14.5 rebounds/assists combined Haliburton did not play well in Game 5, finishing with just eight points, six assists and two rebounds. His combined total for those stats was the second-lowest since the Pacers lost Game 3 to the Cavs in the conference semifinals. He was not aggressive in moving around the court or creating shots for his teammates. When he's not as active shooting the ball, with only seven field goal attempts in Game 5, he's often less active on the glass. When his teammates don't make shots, Haliburton is less inclined to take part in distributing the ball. Since I believe the Pacers will shoot better — as teams often do at home — Haliburton will have more chances for assists. I did not play the Over on points, rebounds and assists combined because, as we saw in Games 2 and 3, he can still be impactful without scoring. His impact is here. I expect him to bounce back on Saturday night. PICK: Haliburton (-110) Over 14.5 rebounds and assists Geoff Schwartz is an NFL analyst for FOX Sports.
