Malaysia Holds Bilateral Talks With Cambodia, Bahrain At ASEAN Summit

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia held separate bilateral meetings with Cambodia and Bahrain today on the sidelines of the 46th ASEAN Summit, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening regional and international cooperation.
The meetings, led by Malaysia's Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, began with his Cambodian counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, at 3pm at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
Both sides discussed bilateral and ASEAN-related matters during the 30-minute session.
Cambodia's delegation comprised Sokhonn, two Secretaries of State from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Kung Phoak and Ouk Sorphorn, and two Under Secretaries of State, Chan Ratana and Hean Polyne.
Following the meeting with Cambodia, Mohamad also met with Bahrain's Foreign Minister, Dr Abdullatif Rashid Alzayani. The half-hour discussion focused on bilateral ties and regional collaboration.
Malaysia's delegation included the Foreign Ministry Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin, and Director General of the ASEAN-Malaysia National Secretariat, Datuk Zanariah Zainal Abidin.
Alzayani led the Bahraini delegation, which included Advisor for Political Affairs Hamad Ali Al Mannaie, Bahrain's Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Walid Khalifa Al Manea, Chief of Legal Affairs and Acting Chief of GCC Affairs Mohamed Abdulrahman AlHaidan, Chief of Coordination and Follow-up and Acting Director of the Minister's Office Saeed Abdulkhaliq Saeed, and Protocol Officer Mohammed Abdulaziz Al Majed.
The 46th ASEAN Summit, set for May 26–27 at KLCC, will bring together leaders of the bloc's member states to address regional challenges, promote economic cooperation, and advance the principles of inclusivity and sustainability.
Kuala Lumpur will also host the second ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit concurrently.

She said the army had been assigned to coordinate operations and maintain readiness to respond to any developments, prioritising sovereignty protection while ensuring international relations and national security. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Supreme Commander General Songwit Noonpakdee, National Security Council Chief Chatchai Bangchuad, and the military's commanders-in-chief. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops engaged in a brief gunfight in Thailand's north-eastern Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's northern Preah Vihear province, where one Cambodian soldier was reportedly killed. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Meanwhile, both countries have agreed to discuss the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), which is set to meet in Phnom Penh on June 14.– BERNAMA

Hun Manet briefs Anwar on Cambodia-Thailand border dispute
PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has briefed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand during a phone conversation. In a Facebook post yesterday, Manet stated that he explained the Kingdom's position on the dispute to Anwar. "Cambodia adheres to the principle of maintaining peace, friendship, and good cooperation with Thailand. Cambodia's decision to refer Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, Ta Krabei Temple, and Mom Bei areas to the International Court of Justice is to seek an early, peaceful, and permanent solution to the border issue in these areas rather than to prolong the uncertainty which can lead to renewed armed conflicts," said Manet. The dispute escalated after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a clash with Thai troops in Preah Vihear province on May 28. Manet added that Cambodia continues to work with Thailand to accelerate border demarcation and delimitation, excluding the four disputed areas, through the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary (JBC). The next JBC meeting is scheduled for June 14 in Phnom Penh. "Cambodia continues to maintain relations between the two countries through all existing mechanisms for the mutual benefit of the two peoples," he told Anwar, who chairs Asean this year.
