Soccer-Goalkeeper Chatchai earns ASEAN title for Buriram United in shootout

The Star21-05-2025

BURIRAM, Thailand (Reuters) -Chatchai Bootprom saved three penalties as Buriram United defeated Vietnam's Cong An Ha Noi 3-2 in a shootout to win the ASEAN Club Championship title on Wednesday after a 3-3 draw in the second leg saw the tie end 5-5 on aggregate.
The 38-year-old goalkeeper kept out spot-kicks from Jason Pendant Quang Vinh, Hugo Gomes and Bui Hoang Viet Anh to earn Osmar Loss' Thai League 1 champions victory in an eventful clash in front of their own fans.
"I have never had as dramatic an experience as this in all my career," said Chatchai.
"I feel very good because we won this trophy. We wanted to win this trophy because we wanted to be the number one in ASEAN."
After a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Hanoi last week, Pendant put the visitors in front in the 15th minute when Nguyen Quang Hai played him in behind the Buriram defence, and the fullback calmly bided his time before shooting beyond Chatchai.
Cong An Ha Noi doubled their advantage from the penalty spot with six minutes left in the half, Leo Artur converting after referee Koji Takasaki awarded a penalty following a clash between Buriram United's Peter Zulj and Gomes.
Zulj made amends seven minutes from time when his shot on the turn found the bottom corner of Filip Nguyen's goal to give the home side hope.
Lucas Crispim then unleashed a thunderous free kick from 30 yards out with the last kick of regulation time to take proceedings into extra time, the Brazilian crashing his right-foot effort off the underside of the bar to beat Nguyen.
Crispim was the instigator of Buriram United's third, the winger embarking on a driving run towards the penalty area that ended with Giap Tuan Duong handling his cross and Guilherme Bissoli converted from the penalty spot in the 105th minute.
However, Cong An Ha Noi's Alan Grafite headed in Quang Hani's corner in the 118th minute to take the game to penalties, where Chatchai's heroics secured the win.

Swimming-Canadian teen McIntosh shatters 400 metres freestyle record

Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports/File photo (Reuters) -Canadian three-times Olympic champion Summer McIntosh set a world record in the women's 400 metres freestyle at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, British Columbia, on Saturday. The 18-year-old clocked 3:54.18 to better Australian Ariarne Titmus' mark of 3:55.38 set at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. "Going into tonight, I knew that my training has been really good these past few months, and I knew that I could do something special," McIntosh told public broadcaster CBC. "So being able to input my training in doing that - I didn't think my training would be 54.1 but I'm really happy with that." At the Paris Olympics, McIntosh became the first athlete from Canada to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games. In Paris, the four-times World Aquatics champion won gold in the 400 metres individual medley, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley, as well as taking silver in the 400 freestyle. But things felt different at the Canada trials. "I just felt so strong throughout, and that's never been the case in the 400 freestyle for me. That last 100, I'm always really, really hurting. "But I flipped at the 200 and I was just cruising, so I knew that I was having a strong swim. I could tell by the crowd and knew the way they were cheering that I was probably close to the world record. "So I really tried to push that last part for them." Cricket-Australia's Hazlewood does not want to miss WTC final again

FILE PHOTO: Cricket - Indian Premier League - IPL - Chennai Super Kings v Royal Challengers Bengaluru - MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, India - March 28, 2025 Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Josh Hazlewood looks on REUTERS/Stringer/File photo LONDON (Reuters) -A calf injury forced Josh Hazlewood to miss being part of Australia's World Test Championship win two years ago and the fast bowler is keen to avoid a second such heartbreak as they defend their WTC title next week. Hazlewood is vying with Scott Boland to claim the last slot in Australia's pace attack for the final against South Africa at Lord's from Wednesday. The 34-year-old arrived late in England, after bowling Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title on Tuesday. "I was quite close last time," Hazlewood, who recently recovered from a should injury, said of the 2023 final he missed. "But I feel in much better place this time around, and I think in any format, my numbers over the last two years have been pretty good, so I've got a lot to fall back on. "Skill wise, I still feel like I'm bowling the best I have in my career and it's just a matter of the body holding up, which it has been in the last few months." Hazlewood was Bengaluru's most successful bowler in the IPL but he will need to shift from 20-overs cricket in India to a different format and the different English conditions. Adjusting the length would be particularly crucial, he said. "In the IPL games, I was probably hitting around that seven-to nine-meters in the powerplay, and not really threatening the stumps as much as you want to in test cricket, in particular here in England," he said. "So, it'll just be about pushing that length and touch fuller and still getting that zip through the keeper." (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty in New Delhi; editing by Michael Perry)

Soccer-Tuchel unhappy with England attitude after Andorra toil

Soccer Football - World Cup - European Qualifiers - Group K - Andorra v England - RCDE Stadium, Cornella de Llobregat, Spain - June 7, 2025 England manager Thomas Tuchel reacts Action Images via Reuters/Peter Cziborra BARCELONA (Reuters) -England coach Thomas Tuchel criticised his team after they struggled to a 1-0 victory away to Andorra in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday. The German has won his first three matches in charge with no goals conceded but had it not been for Harry Kane's 50th-minute goal his team would have faced humiliation against a side ranked 173rd in the world. After collecting the three points that put England in command of Group K, Tuchel made no attempt to sugar coat a performance that was way below par. "We can just admit it that it's not what we expect from us. We need to look at it in detail and do better on Tuesday," the German told ITV Sport. "We lost all momentum after the first 25 minutes and lacked the quality and the energy. I was most worried in the last 20 minutes, I did not like the attitude that we ended the game with. I didn't like the lack of urgency. It is still a World Cup qualifier away from home." England had 83% of the possession against a nation they had scored 25 goals against without reply in six previous meetings, but suffered from a chronic lack of imagination. Asked if his message before the game had not got through to his players, Tuchel added: "The message got across because we had a good 25 minutes but then the energy and the determination weren't there anymore." It was a refreshingly honest take from the former Paris St Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager whose contract with England only runs to the date of next year's World Cup final. He did have kind words, however, for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke whose display was about the only bright point for England. "He was over the course of the match, the most dangerous. I could feel his hunger to do what was the plan throughout the whole of the match," Tuchel said. Captain Kane, whose goal was the 450th of his career for club and country, also praised Madueke. "I think he was a constant threat today and got the assist for the goal, but we need more of that," Kane said. "We have amazing players and we need players who are not afraid to take players on and if they lose it, do it again." England host Senegal in a friendly in Nottingham on Tuesday.
